What do you think of this family house rule?

People in the house are not allowed to come downstairs in the morning without being fully dressed/clean and moderately groomed.

This does not apply to school kids during the week. But at the weekends/school holidays memebers of the household are not allowed to be in pyjamas. They can veg out on the sofa but they have to be groomed and in clean clothes. Trackies are allowed.

Yep. Fuck this. I'd just stay in my room if I was a kid in this house. Nonsense.

Have a nice relaxing breakfast, then go and brush teeth, hair, wash and dress.
Who wants to eat a breakfast that tastes of toothpaste anyway?

Someone who doesn’t want a breakfast that tastes like morning breath?

I remain astounded on these threads at the number of people who eat before brushing their teeth. Not only is it not good for your teeth, it sounds like the worst thing in the world to me 😂

ThejoyofNC · 13/03/2025 19:01

Sorry but I love a pj day too much for this nonsense.

unsync · 13/03/2025 19:01

I can see the argument for clean and not smelling unpleasant, it shows consideration for those you are sharing space with.

Arcticrival · 13/03/2025 19:01

Ridiculous. Co ercive and Controlling behaviour.

If your kids can't relax at home don't expect to ever see them again when they are adults. You know they will never visit with such ludicrous rules

Fullmoon13 · 13/03/2025 19:01

People are so anal. I actually feel sorry for people like this.

Just relax a bit, you might feel happy and be nicer to be around.

HippeePrincess · 13/03/2025 18:42

Doesn’t everyone in the whole world go and make coffee in their dressing gowns before they do anything else? No way I’d be dressed before coffee, especially on a weekend.

Exactly! Heck I quite often go down to make a cup of tea if I happen to wake up in the early hours before attempting to go back to sleep.

And never return once I was 18 and had left

They can do a pj day but just in loungewear that isn’t slept in.

Not in my house. Usually we are dressed but some days clothes dragged on, few time over pyjamas, to answer the door. If I feel like lounging in my pj’s I do. Days when I decide to wash my hair in the afternoon I shower then settle into pyjamas and carry on.

IndiraCake · 13/03/2025 19:02

This was the rule when I was growing up. It was not very relaxed.

I spend most of my time at home lying down, I’m definitely relaxed. I’m just not doing it in pyjamas. Presumably OPs kids are capable of the same?

Snorlaxo · 13/03/2025 19:03

If they have BO they need a shower, hair wash, hairstyling and maybe makeup. That’s not 5 mins - especially if you have to wait for siblings to shower first and air out the bathroom if they also used the loo.

W0tnow · 13/03/2025 19:03

I think it’s an outrageous request to make of someone in their own home and no way would I comply with it.

GiddyRobin · 13/03/2025 19:03

Is your name Val Denton and does your DH collect toads? (Not frogs!)

blushroses6 · 13/03/2025 19:03

This sounds awful life is too short, I love a coffee in my dressing gown. I also love nothing more than coming home and changing into (clean) comfy pjs, so I have no issue with my toddler lounging around in hers. Unsure why pjs are seen as “dirty”, we have multiple (nice) pairs and a washing machine?

VisitationRights · 13/03/2025 19:03

I think this is weird controlling behaviour.

Ophy83 · 13/03/2025 19:03

DS12 relishes his lazy Saturday mornings having a long lie in then gaming in his PJs (which are clean, as is he, having showered the night before). I couldn't begrudge him that - during the week he uncomplainingly gets up early, cycles himself to school, 5 full days of essentially wearing an office suit and tie which is what school uniform is

ShriekingTrespasser · 13/03/2025 19:04

This is the rule in my house. It was really useful when dcs were small as we’d go downstairs fully washed and dressed (including me during maternity leave) and the rest of the day was easier. It’s just stuck and dcs never hang around in pjs. They will shower and get into pjs in the evening and that’s fine.

That's not a PJ day though? Due to the lack of pyjamas involved.

Look it’s obviously you enforcing this on your poor dc. They and their dad obviously don’t like it.
Just let them be, otherwise in years to come they’ll be starting a mumsnet thread about their crazy and controlling mum.

Someone has way too much time on their hands

GreenLeaf25 · 13/03/2025 19:05

If you can’t be comfortable in your own house where can you feel comfortable. Ridiculous in my opinion
