What do you think of this family house rule?

Porcell · 13/03/2025 18:38

People in the house are not allowed to come downstairs in the morning without being fully dressed/clean and moderately groomed.

This does not apply to school kids during the week. But at the weekends/school holidays memebers of the household are not allowed to be in pyjamas. They can veg out on the sofa but they have to be groomed and in clean clothes. Trackies are allowed.

Seems reasonable to me but I'd have no difficulty following your rules. I don't go downstairs until I'm dressed and ready for the day.

Bumblebeestiltskin · 13/03/2025 18:45

If I were an adult in that household, I'd leave with the kids (or kick the controlling adult out). If I were a kid and all adults were in agreement with the rule, I'd leave home as soon as I possibly could.

FidosMum84 · 13/03/2025 18:45

No clue what positive life skill that would be teaching your kids. To feel uncomfortable and controlled in their own home? Or that they’re not welcome to participate in family life until they conform to your standards of appearance?

Thre3isthemagicnumber · 13/03/2025 18:45

Ridiculous!

Lanifers · 13/03/2025 18:46

Better off having a rule that slobbing out time stops at x o’clock if it’s a problem. Personally I love a lazy day and am so grateful on the rare occasion I get one!

ForLovingAquaSheep · 13/03/2025 18:46

I need to grow into the day so it's PJ's until kids have had breakfast at the weekend then out with the dog by 9.

If they were the type of scruffs who'd lounge around until after lunch before readying themselves rules might be more Draconian.

Weekdays nobody eats breakfast at home so its up, dressed and out of the door by 730 for breakfast club.

Agree. Always washed and dressed before breakfast. I was in a hotel once where people were in PJs at the breakfast buffet. Utterly vile!

Linens · 13/03/2025 18:47

I quite like the idea in principle although couldn’t follow it myself. Need a cup of tea first thing!
I think if you’ve got one of these kids (boys) that fester all day and night gaming or a kid that lounges around depressed in a scrotty dressing gown it might be worth implementing. For small children I don’t get it really, they are normally up with the lark full of life! Let them come down early in PJs and watch telly until the adults come alive has always been a good strategy here for a bit of a lie in.
It might also be good if you have some sort of ND which makes going back up the stairs to get washed and dressed really onerous and you’re better off having this rule?

Hoppinggreen · 13/03/2025 18:47

The only rule we ever had that was similar is that on school days nobody can come down until they are ready for school, ie dressed and with all bags etc.
It started to stop the DC messing about when they were younger and I was trying to get everyone out of the house on time.
DS still does it now despite being 16 and me being more chilled about it

EverythingElseIsTaken · 13/03/2025 18:47

No way. The first thing that happens in the morning is a quick wee and then downstairs to make a cup of tea! Tea usually gets taken back upstairs to drink while getting ready for work or to drink in bed on non work days.
In the summer non work days we often have our breakfast in our dressing gowns in the conservatory listening to the birds.
It’s our home and we like to relax when we can.

Porcell · 13/03/2025 18:48

Pyjamas at night after a shower is fine.

Hotels are totally different from your own home, I'd never do it in a hotel and judge those that do..

Createausername1970 · 13/03/2025 18:48

I don't like it. I always have a cuppa, sort the dishwasher and do Wordle before I even THINK about anything else. If I have no reason to get dressed, then I am happy not to, and not create additional laundry and additional electricity bills. Me staying in my jammies is better for my pocket 🤣🤣

Why can’t you buy comfortable clothes other than pajamas? They do exist you know.

yeesh · 13/03/2025 18:49

its Just controlling for the sake of it. I wouldn’t live anywhere there were “house rules” let alone something this stupidly anal

Surely you can see the difference between going to breakfast in pyjamas in a public place, and being told you couldn't come downstairs in your own home until fully dressed?

You are all heart.😄

Fullmoon13 · 13/03/2025 18:50

I’m really intrigued as to who is enforcing this rule.

i wouldn’t be living by it though.

Createausername1970 · 13/03/2025 18:50

Also, my son works nights, so his timings are reversed. He gets up at 7 p.m. for his breakfast.

SheridansPortSalut · 13/03/2025 18:50

Does one also require formal attire for dinner?

Porcell · 13/03/2025 18:51

The mum of the house (not saying if it’s me or not) hates the teens slobbing around in pyjamas. She thinks it encourages people to start the day off right and creates a nicer home environment. She doesn’t mind the kids lazing around just not in dirty pyjamas with bo.

Everyone just needs to be dressed with hair not a mess and clean clothes. 5 min job.

HomeBodyClub · 13/03/2025 18:51

Ridiculous. Kids need to grow up being able to relax.

Unpaidviewer · 13/03/2025 18:51

I love chilling with a coffee and Sunday paper in my pjs. A better rule would be no slobbing out in pjs all day if it bothers you, like 10am cut off.

Are you planning on enforcing it on Christmas day too?

FOJN · 13/03/2025 18:51

Not my house so none of my business but I wouldn't tolerate such controlling behaviour in my own home.

Home is supposed to be a safe place where you can relax and the rules around being "in public" don't apply.

HomeBodyClub · 13/03/2025 18:52

Why are pjs seen as dirty?
