NHS England to go is Keir being unreasonable?

I don’t work for the NHS but have friends who do (and are increasingly looking at leaving - in some cases to move abroad).

Is the removal of NHS England a good thing? Or is this a Labour gimmick?

To include an Aibu for Keir -

Yes Keir - you are being unreasonable

Or

Good job Keir, please get rid of NHS England - you are NOT being unreasonable

Keir Starmer scraps NHS England to bring health service back under 'democratic control' - live updates

The PM says abolishing "the arms-length body" will reduce duplication and save money that can then be spent on frontline services.

what possible commercial opportunity would there be for either party

For the buyer it’s data. Lots and lots of valuable data.

oodles of it - my friend would never agree to sharing hers for that reason. I'd forgotten that.

There is so much wrong here. Firstly, the main reason NHSE was created was to give the government some necks to put on the block and provide ministers with some air cover when things were going wrong in the NHS.

Secondly, even if there had been some secret government conspiracy to ultimately sell NHSE off, what possible commercial opportunity would there be for either party in selling/buying an organisation which is not particularly expensive to run (NHSE’s annual running costs approximately equate to the cost of running the entire NHS for one day) and whose only functions are to set the strategic direction for the NHS in England, work with local health systems to improve care, and to monitor and evaluate the performance of the NHS?

I wonder whether there might be some confusion about which NHS organisations are which? As obviously the NHS property company was turned into a limited company, and certainly the impression at the time was that that was an effort at privatisation of NHS property services, but it was such a mess that it was clearly unsaleable.

Yesterday, Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed that at least 10,000 civil service jobs are due to be axed in a bid to save around £2bn in costs.
The chancellor said Labour was looking to cut back the civil service by slashing its "back office functions, the administrative and bureaucracy functions" by the end of this parliament.
Another day another labour cut (I thought Labour were for the working person instead they are destroying the Civil Service and NHS). By the way I read an article today that said that there are only 200-300 people doing duplicate roles between NHS England and DHSC and these people are policy focused.

LivLuna · 24/03/2025 13:50

@Chelsea2026 would you prefer a tax rise instead. If so then who should we tax? Working people are already suffering increased taxes. Companies have already been taxed extra by raising NI, more corporation tax would hold back growth which is what would ultimately help increase tax revenues. Or raise more borrowing which is expensive and delays to problem to be dealt with by another generation.

Any chance of a link to that article?

The Reshaping Of NHS National Bodies Has Only Just Started. How Will It Finish? | The King's Fund

I’ve read that opinion piece before and it doesn’t say anything about only 200 or 300 being in duplicate roles.

If anyone does want to hear more, Wes Streeting is currently giving evidence about all this along with NHSE's Chief Exec and Chris Witty now to the Health Select Committee on parliamentlive.tv.

Very interesting that Wes seems less confident than I've seen him previously. And the Chair at the start was excellent. The narrative about great people working in NHSE has come too late though.

if they’re that great jobs will soon be found for them elsewhere in the NHS.

Getting rid of NHSE and 50% of the ICB staff is a huge mistake and now all other ALBs are now under review! I wonder if they will get rid of ALBs like CQC and PDS?

BIossomtoes · 08/04/2025 13:23

We can but hope.

Chelsea2026 · 08/04/2025 13:25

I hope not as CQC is very important!

BIossomtoes · 08/04/2025 13:27

The work the CQC does is important. It doesn’t need to be done by a separate organisation.

Shefliesonherownwings · 08/04/2025 13:27

Do people realise that these ALBs actually do really important work?! Yes there is a need for some streamlining and taking a look at functions but abolishing all ALBs is crazy. There will not be the improvement in front line services that is being bandied around as the benefit from abolishing NHSE.

BIossomtoes · 08/04/2025 14:28

A lot more money will reach frontline services. Once again, some of the work is important. That doesn’t mean it needs to be done in a dedicated organisation.

Annoyeddd · 08/04/2025 15:05

What proportion of problems found by cqc are caused by chronic understaffing and/or underfunding.

Shotokan101 · 08/04/2025 15:35

What the hell do all the "TLA's" that are being so freely bandied about actually stand for?

It's really annoying....

ALBs - Arms Length Bodies
CQC - Care Quality Commission (Health and Social Care Regulator)
MHRA - Medicines Healthcare products Regulation Authority (Medicines, medical devices etc... regulator)
No idea what PDS is unless the poster means PHE? Public Health England?

Anyone else working for an ICB and wondering whether the department of health is going to reveal the new outline for ICB functions today?

I heard it’s expected Friday but then a friend in another ICB was told it’s delayed until next week so who knows.

AltitudeCheck · 01/05/2025 16:16

We just heard it's delayed until either Fri or Tues now due to mayoral elections and then the BH.
