Upset at not being able to lose weight

BelloItalia · 11/03/2025 21:00

Im 45 this year. Never had a problem with my weight before and whenever it crept up I’d just go on a bit of loose diet and it would fall off again.
Since I turned 40 I’m no longer able to lose weight. I’m now 11 stone which isn’t massively overweight but 10st is ideal for me. I just can’t get there.
Mir doesn’t seem to matter what I eat, the weight won’t shift. I’ve tried slimming world, low carb, calorie counting, intermittent fasting - nothing works. I’ll drop a couple of pounds then it will come back again. It’s actually making me quite upset. All my clothes are too tight, I spend so much time meal planning I feel like it’s all I ever think about.

AIBU to think there must be a way to get back to 10st?? I’m not menopausal

I got up to 12 stone and was fed up. In the end, with a BMI in the overweight category plus back issues, I got Mounjaro. Appreciate you might not want the jabs (or may not be heavy enough) but they’ve worked wonders and I’m now 9 stone.

Oblomov25 · 11/03/2025 21:39

When you read the menu, it sounds like nothing, no treats, no snacks, nothing. How on earth op isn't losing weight, is just so unfair.

Justhere65 · 11/03/2025 21:40

I am older than you and really struggled to lose weight until I tried the HB diet and amazed I am actually losing weight. It might be worth you looking at it?

Lentilweaver · 11/03/2025 21:41

Really more research needs to be done re hormonal weight gain and menopausal insulin resistance. In peri or menopause, it is no longer as simple as calories in calories out.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 11/03/2025 21:42

Try an app like Nutracheck and weigh everything to begin with. I had to get down to 1400 calories a day to start to shift the weight.

Are you really having 125 g of walnuts? That's nearly 900 calories just for the walnuts. Add in the yogurt at say 150 cals and you are over 1000 for breakfast

This is the key to your problem! You need to weigh everything and calculate the calories for it. Aim for a total of 1200 a day and weigh yourself after a week, wearing the same clothes and at the same time as your initial weigh in. Good luck,!

Tumblingthrough · 11/03/2025 21:48

Have you tried 5:2 OP?

PeloMom · 11/03/2025 21:48

125g walnuts is a lot of calories. Salmon fishing fat too. High protein with calorie deficit and increased activity should do the job

Lentilweaver · 11/03/2025 21:49

OP has already clarified its not 125 gm of walnuts.

Flopsy145 · 11/03/2025 21:49

How tall are you?
I would say you're potentially not eating enough. At 45 could very well be hormonal, you can get a hormone test done to see if your oestrogen is low etc. The weight not shifting will be a symptom of some other imbalance be it gut or hormones.

I had to do Mounjaro also. I wasn't able to eat the small amount of calories I needed to shift the weight otherwise. I'd been trying for fifteen years to lose two stone.

doistayordoigo · 11/03/2025 21:53

I was similar but tried Michael Mosley's Fast 800 diet last year and amazed at how effective it was. Read the book and also bought the accompanying recipe books. Finally feel a bit more in control. Definitely worth trying.

chipsticksmammy · 11/03/2025 21:58

It will be your age. You don’t have to have all the symptoms. Weight gain is common in Peri.

Honestly, Mounjaro. Best thing I’ve ever done.

I did 15 months of tracking 1400 calories a day on MFP, chasing a huge protein goal, 4/5 CrossFit classes a week burning around 500 calories a time, gave up alcohol and still gained a stone.
Nothing stopped the gain, literally nothing. It all sat front and centre on my stomach. I looked awful.

I've lost 21 pounds since September. It’s been a very deliberate slow loss to keep me still able to work out.

It’s not a magic wand by any means but it has reversed the gain and pulled me mentally out of a very bad place indeed.

Morechocmorechoc · 11/03/2025 21:59

Maybe you need lower fat food. How much salmon are you eating, this can be calories. Nuts high calories e.t.c. what sauce is on your curry. It may be you are not eating much but it's higher calories than you think

TroysMammy · 11/03/2025 21:59

@BelloItalia I lost just over 2 stone from May to December last year by using the Nutracheck app. First week was free and it cost £27.99 for 12 months. I weighed my food, didn't cut out anything but looked for the low fat, lower calorie and lower sugar options for some foods. I drastically cut down on my bread and cheese intake but I didn't exercise apart from the occasional walk around the park.

My fatty liver has been reversed and is back to normal and so are my blood results. I've gone from 10 stone 9lb to 8 stone 8lb so at 5ft tall I'm now a healthy bmi. I now know what the correct portion size is and I can maintain my weight. Also I kept my size 12 clothes for the day I'll get back into them and now I can.

HorrorFan81 · 11/03/2025 22:03

Also recommend the Fast 800 Keto. I've lost 19lbs on that since beginning of Jan (161lbs to 142lbs)

Scarydinosaurs · 11/03/2025 22:04

I could have written this - had an infusion for my anemia and now feel like I can tackle the weight loss.

I hope you can get your anemia under control and that helps.

Have you tried 5:2 OP?

I second 5:2! You can do it on Nutracheck. You can eat more calories on your non-fast days, but your 2 fast days keep your metabolism working hard. I plateaued while eating 1200 calories a day because my metabolism had slowed right down. The 5:2 diet helped me to lose the last little bit, and I've been maintaining for 3 years now. Now I eat 1750 calories on my non-fast days. Much nicer!

RoastDinnerSmellsNice · 11/03/2025 21:06

OP, I've just looked up the calories in the walnuts, and 125 gms is costing you

818 calories!!

Cut them out, and you might be getting somewhere

My first thought, too!

Tumblingthrough · 11/03/2025 22:26

IntoTheVoid68 · 11/03/2025 22:25

My first thought, too!

It was a typo and the OP has already said

Lentilweaver · 11/03/2025 22:27

We are not going to move past the walnuts, are we? 😃 Please click on ' see all posts' by the OP.

EconomyClassRockstar · 11/03/2025 22:28

I found once I hit 40 it became all about the exercise. Cardio, strength and pilates worked for me.

Hankunamatata · 11/03/2025 22:29

Weight gain is the most common symptom of peri menopause. At 45 your definitely in the realms of peri menopause

lljkk · 11/03/2025 22:34

Secret Eaters... all those ppl willing to go on TV to insist how little they ever ate, then filmed repeatedly consuming far far more.
