To think it is obvious that you are roasting the chicken...

DH and I both been out with different DC today. Had a discussion in the middle of the day around what we were having for dinner (Chicken Caesar salad with diced roast potatoes). Likelihood was that he'd be home first and would get dinner on.

We have a whole chicken (no other chicken) in the fridge for the salad. He sent me a message asking if he "should roast the chicken". I didn't see the message so have just spoken to him and apparently he was waiting for me to reply so hasn't put the chicken on. Given that we have no other chicken and he is aware of what we were having, AIBU to assume that it was bloody obvious what to do with the chicken and that he didn't need me to tell him?

I'm pretty grumpy that we're going to eat really late and he's having a strop because I asked him if he thought we'd be eating it raw.

Maybe he thought you hadn’t realised there was no other chicken? I’d be annoyed he didn’t make a decision but it’s not exactly a massive deal. And a salad is a waste of a roast chicken! Have a Sunday roast and use the left overs for a salad on Monday yes I’m missing the point I no

PrincessAnne5Eva · 09/03/2025 18:17

I think it's weird that the first thing you'd do with a full roast chicken is wait for it to cool down, chop some of it up and put it in a salad. I can see why he was confused. I've never roasted a whole chicken and not made a roast dinner with the first meal. It's a lot of chicken to cook for just chucking on a salad.

So I'm not sure that I'd be annoyed at him as it's so unusual.

I'm sure plenty will be along to tell you LTB weaponised incompetence etc though.

TickingAlongNicely · 09/03/2025 18:17

Its a miscommunication.

🤣🤣

Seriously though, yes I would find it annoying. Unless you generally do your own butchery (is that a word?) then there is not much else you would do with a whole chicken late in the afternoon if you were planning on eating it that evening.

Yes, this. Very odd.

This, maybe he thought you'd mean to joint and take the meat off chicken and pan fry it?
We'd see roasting a chicken for a salad as a waste!

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 09/03/2025 18:19

I mean I wouldn't expect to use a whole chicken for a salad but there you go.

Neverenoughbiscuits · 09/03/2025 18:21

We'll have the leftovers in something tomorrow. I only buy good quality chicken so it's often cheaper to get a whole corn fed one than it is to buy the same amount of chicken already split into portions.

Weaponised incompetence. You won't ask him again. Ps. I'm with OP - it was obvious what you meant.

JandamiHash · 09/03/2025 18:23

I wouldn’t assume that a whole chicken would have to be roasted to make a Caesar salad. Sorry but what a waste - roasting chicken should be followed by Yorkshires, gravy, carrots peas and toasties not some boring salad. Just pick some up from the local little Asda/Tesco/ Co Op

You can still cut it down and use the various parts for separate meals. It was not an unreasonable question of him to ask

JandamiHash · 09/03/2025 18:26

I get where he’s coming from him is also think “surely she doesn’t mean to use a massive chicken for a salad”. You’d also be annoyed if you picked up a few breasts from the co op and came home to find the chicken you’d been saving for a roast was being wasted.

Solmum1964 · 09/03/2025 18:27

Spatchcock it and it will roast more quickly

Semiramide · 09/03/2025 18:28

Well, you should have replied and explained.

But as you didn't, why didn't he just take off the breasts and pan-fried them for the salad...

Of course, I'm surprised how many people on this thread can't imagine that freshly roasted chicken on a Caesar salad would be delicious on an unseasonably warm spring day.

YANBU OP, he should have used a bit of nous and got on and cooked the chicken.

I'm with you. Don't really understand either. Why is it any different to having a roast dinner. We've got salad, dressing and diced roasted potatoes. Not really anything different 🤷

Also Yorkshire's are not for roast chicken. Beef only in this house.

DoYouReally · 09/03/2025 18:43

I'm on his side.

I can't understand roasting a chicken and potatoes to put it in a salad immediately.

To me, I would have a roast today and have the salad with the leftovers tomorrow.

Given you are so annoyed over something this small, he probably thought you would have a go at him if he made the wrong choice so was double checking.

Given you are annoyed at him now, over something so minor, I fully understand why he wanted to check.

🤣

I'd quite happily eat Yorkshires with any food that also includes gravy (or any kind of sauce).

Am I a heathen...

With so many cooking rules, it's not wonder he didn't want to chance it.

biscuitsandbooks · 09/03/2025 18:46

Totally missing the point, but a meal of salad and roast potatoes sounds totally bizarre to me Grin

I wouldn't think to roast a whole chicken for a salad either, I have to say.

Lincslady53 · 09/03/2025 18:46

We have been married for 48 years. Here is my advice based on my experience. If you want DH to do something, tell him specifically what it is you want him to do. Do not give any leeway for him to use his 'initiative. This way you will not be disappointed or annoyed when he doesn't do what you want. This also applies with presents. Do not give vague hints. Tell him, or better still, send him the link. 😁
