To think it is obvious that you are roasting the chicken...

DH and I both been out with different DC today. Had a discussion in the middle of the day around what we were having for dinner (Chicken Caesar salad with diced roast potatoes). Likelihood was that he'd be home first and would get dinner on.

We have a whole chicken (no other chicken) in the fridge for the salad. He sent me a message asking if he "should roast the chicken". I didn't see the message so have just spoken to him and apparently he was waiting for me to reply so hasn't put the chicken on. Given that we have no other chicken and he is aware of what we were having, AIBU to assume that it was bloody obvious what to do with the chicken and that he didn't need me to tell him?

I'm pretty grumpy that we're going to eat really late and he's having a strop because I asked him if he thought we'd be eating it raw.

When I was a working mother with school-age children - a long time ago... - I would often roast 3 small chickens on a Saturday or Sunday, and that took care of several meals during the week. And not just the obvious roast plus curry, Asian stir-fry et cetera - there's no reason why spag bol or lasagne can't be made with chicken.

Luckily everyone in my family loves chicken!

JoyousEagle · 09/03/2025 18:50

Well I suppose it depends what the norm in their house is.

We buy a chicken every week but rarely have a roast dinner meal. It gets cooked and then used for a few different things - lunches, a stir fry, chicken pie, salad, chicken fried rice with veg, a spicy chicken pilaf that I cook etc, (not all these things from one chicken!). So for us, yes DH would know that the chicken needed cooking.

The mistake you are making is in not buying a Mumsnet chicken. Were you to do that, you would get ALL those meals from the one bird and have enough left over to feed a family of four starving passers by.

KrisAkabusi · 09/03/2025 19:40

If i was having a salad I can think of half a dozen things I'd do with a chicken before I'd get to roasting it whole.

daliesque · 09/03/2025 19:41

surely she doesn’t mean to use a massive chicken for a salad

But surely it's a massive salad?

I'd do the same as OP. Don't like roast dinners so I often have the meat with a salad. Not massive though cos mounjaro.

lavenderlou · 09/03/2025 19:42

Depends if you do all the meal planning and would normally get annoyed if he used something he shouldn't. I am known for being unreasonably controlling about the meal and ingredient planning so I can understand why my DH would wait for confirmation in a similar situation. He might have thought there was some pre-cooked chicken somewhere or smaller pieces in the freezer. You might not be like me of course!

Over such a poultry matter?

I think it's weird that the first thing you'd do with a full roast chicken is wait for it to cool down, chop some of it up and put it in a salad. I can see why he was confused. I've never roasted a whole chicken and not made a roast dinner with the first meal. It's a lot of chicken to cook for just chucking on a salad.

So I'm not sure that I'd be annoyed at him as it's so unusual.

I'm sure plenty will be along to tell you LTB weaponised incompetence etc though.

100% this

Neverenoughbiscuits · 09/03/2025 19:44

Bigtreebrenda · 09/03/2025 19:05

Agreed. Roasting a chicken for a cold salad dish is crazy.

What do you eat roast chicken with in the summer. Do you always have a full roast dinner?

Edited

I am firmly in the 'chicken does not need to be cold to be served with salad' camp.

However, a roast dinner is absolutely wonderful at any time of year, whatever the thermometer reading. Especially if someone else dear husband is cooking it.

Alwaystired23 · 09/03/2025 19:53

I really enjoy a whole roast chicken, for a salad, add a jacket potato and it's lovely. I much prefer a roast chicken to chicken breasts, thighs etc that you'd buy separately. A whole chicken is much more tasty in my opinion. I don't think the op was unreasonable to assume he'd put it in the oven, especially as he lives with the OP and this sounds like something they do, so he would KNOW this is what he should do.

violetsorrengail · 09/03/2025 19:55

It's a bit annoying, I can see why he'd be confused about roasting a whole chicken for a salad but I'm sounds like it's not unusual for your household so he should know. But it is what it is, just have some toast or something and have the chicken tomorrow. It's not worth arguing about one meal.

We have been married for 48 years. Here is my advice based on my experience. If you want DH to do something, tell him specifically what it is you want him to do. Do not give any leeway for him to use his 'initiative. This way you will not be disappointed or annoyed when he doesn't do what you want. This also applies with presents. Do not give vague hints. Tell him, or better still, send him the link. 😁

9 years married here but I learnt these tricks about husbands by about year 3

Also Yorkshire's are not for roast chicken. Beef only in this house.

Now I know you're ridiculous.

I think I would feel eggsaxctly the same tbh

Thirteenblackcat · 09/03/2025 20:27

For a salad I’d use chicken breasts so I wouldn’t think to use a whole chicken.

But if this is what you do in your house and DH is aware, yes he should have realised

Iwannakeepondancing · 09/03/2025 20:31

Nope I’d not assume a whole chicken was for this either so think you may be in the minority!

soupyspoon · 09/03/2025 20:31

So for the people that are aghast at cooking up the chicken to put in the salad, how do you do your chicken salads? Not prepacked cooked chicken surely?

And if not, then you'll be buying chicken to cook up? So whats the difference?

Personally I dont like breast, only thigh and I like it slow cooked like roasted

I do think OP was unreasonable though simply by expecting mind reading.

ohtowinthelottery · 09/03/2025 20:32

In the absence of a quick reply from you, I would have expected him to make an 'executive' decision to roast the chicken

I went to the DIY shop today to get something. Wasn't sure if I was buying the right thing in the shop so messaged DH. DH didn't reply so I rang him. He still didn't answer even though he's normally attached to his phone 24/7 so I made the decision to buy what I though was best and own the decision. It's what adults do.

It's astonishing and a bit disturbing that such infidels exist, even South of the Watford Gap. 😁😁

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/03/2025 20:34

I don't get what the weather has got to do with it?! Roast chicken isn't just for winter nor salad for summer. Surely it's only a few degrees warmer this weekend, not sure where you live OP but if you live anywhere in the UK it doesn't get that warm this time of year that it would not be obvious you can only eat salad!

But....there was no other chicken in the house. We'd talked about what we were having for dinner which came about following a shopping list which had been sent to our group chat with eldest dd which included whole corn fed chicken and all the other ingredients for Caesar salad. He even sent her out for more mayo as we ran out and he knew I wouldn't be able to stop anywhere.

I don't think and executive decision need to be made because there's not really any other conclusion unless he's butchering the chicken which has never happened in our house?!

Neverenoughbiscuits · 09/03/2025 18:21

We'll have the leftovers in something tomorrow. I only buy good quality chicken so it's often cheaper to get a whole corn fed one than it is to buy the same amount of chicken already split into portions.

Given the delayed start, I'd have then said let's have an easy pasta dinner tonight and use the chicken another day, rather than being stressed about the timing and keeping the kids up.
