To think it is obvious that you are roasting the chicken...

DH and I both been out with different DC today. Had a discussion in the middle of the day around what we were having for dinner (Chicken Caesar salad with diced roast potatoes). Likelihood was that he'd be home first and would get dinner on.

We have a whole chicken (no other chicken) in the fridge for the salad. He sent me a message asking if he "should roast the chicken". I didn't see the message so have just spoken to him and apparently he was waiting for me to reply so hasn't put the chicken on. Given that we have no other chicken and he is aware of what we were having, AIBU to assume that it was bloody obvious what to do with the chicken and that he didn't need me to tell him?

I'm pretty grumpy that we're going to eat really late and he's having a strop because I asked him if he thought we'd be eating it raw.

There's so much wrong with the premise of roasting an entire chicken to make a salad, for dinner, with roasted potatoes, that frankly I don't know which if you is the most unreasonable!

(Also yes, spatchcock it, it'll roast in 40-50 mins).

🤣

I'd quite happily eat Yorkshires with any food that also includes gravy (or any kind of sauce).

Am I a heathen...

And jam

I think it's weird that the first thing you'd do with a full roast chicken is wait for it to cool down, chop some of it up and put it in a salad. I can see why he was confused. I've never roasted a whole chicken and not made a roast dinner with the first meal. It's a lot of chicken to cook for just chucking on a salad.

So I'm not sure that I'd be annoyed at him as it's so unusual.

I'm sure plenty will be along to tell you LTB weaponised incompetence etc though.

I’m with this ^

Well I suppose it depends what the norm in their house is.

We buy a chicken every week but rarely have a roast dinner meal. It gets cooked and then used for a few different things - lunches, a stir fry, chicken pie, salad, chicken fried rice with veg, a spicy chicken pilaf that I cook etc, (not all these things from one chicken!). So for us, yes DH would know that the chicken needed cooking.

soupyspoon · 09/03/2025 18:50

I bet he's done something 'wrong' before by cooking up the wrong thing or at the wrong time or too much of it or something and you've complained about that so now he was waiting for you to confirm what you wanted.

I also think a roast chicken is a nice thing in a salad, I dont see it as a waste but he wanted confirmation that was what was going to happen, thats all

Weaponised incompetence. You won't ask him again. Ps. I'm with OP - it was obvious what you meant.

This!

I get where he’s coming from him is also think “surely she doesn’t mean to use a massive chicken for a salad”. You’d also be annoyed if you picked up a few breasts from the co op and came home to find the chicken you’d been saving for a roast was being wasted.

Very funny 😁 😂

Agreed. Roasting a chicken for a cold salad dish is crazy.

TomatoSandwiches · 09/03/2025 19:07

Well I think he's stupid, of course if there's only a whole chicken and you've agreed to chicken for dinner then that's what needs to be cooked ffs.
We regularly buy a decent chicken like yourself and roast it for salad or with pasta, it's better quality and I get a carcass to use for broth, cut it up into a crown and thighs, drumsticks is also cost effective.
It's not the end of the world but irritating he couldn't use his initiative, is he like that a lot?

IndiraCake · 09/03/2025 19:07

If you're chopping it up anyway, why not just joint it before you put it in the oven? That will save you an hour.

TomatoSandwiches · 09/03/2025 19:08

Warm chicken with bacon, crispy potatoes and cold salad dressed leaves is lovely.

ParrotParty · 09/03/2025 19:10

I wouldn't roast a whole chicken for chicken salad, unless you usually do that maybe he assumed you were getting a smaller amount of precooked chicken or raw to fry for the salad?

BuffaloCauliflower · 09/03/2025 19:12

OP I can’t speak to your DH because mine only cooks with very clear instructions and I’d have specifically asked him to roast the chicken, on what temp and time, but just wanted to back you up on roasting a chicken for things other than just a Sunday roast dinner. I think it’s more odd how many people can’t think of a single other meal you’d roast a chicken for, and good quality chicken is generally most economical bought whole, so you’re not wrong there.

dijonketchup · 09/03/2025 19:12

I’m with you OP, I put a beef pot roast on early this morning and went out telling DH it was sorted (ie leave it alone!), all he had to do was the potatoes and veg.

He heard the first part but I came home at lunchtime to no roasties/sides because I “had told him it was all sorted.” MEN FFS

user2848502016 · 09/03/2025 19:16

To be fair I think it's a bit weird that you'd roast a whole chicken and then eat it cold in a salad - I'd have done roast chicken tonight and salad with leftovers tomorrow.

Just a miscommunication though, can't you cook something else for tonight while the chicken is roasting and have the chicken tomorrow?

TortolaParadise · 09/03/2025 19:18

You are being very reasonable OP. Any how you look at this, raw was never an option. 🐔

OriginalUsername2 · 09/03/2025 19:21

Wow people really have a hard time thinking out of the box 😅

You roast the chicken, take what you want for your salad and eat the rest the next day.

Louielooiloveyou · 09/03/2025 19:21

DoYouReally · 09/03/2025 18:43

I'm on his side.

I can't understand roasting a chicken and potatoes to put it in a salad immediately.

To me, I would have a roast today and have the salad with the leftovers tomorrow.

Given you are so annoyed over something this small, he probably thought you would have a go at him if he made the wrong choice so was double checking.

Given you are annoyed at him now, over something so minor, I fully understand why he wanted to check.

This

i would always check as id assume its left over roast, esp if my partner was known to get angry over stuff like this

obsessedwithfreshbread · 09/03/2025 19:22

@BuffaloCauliflower @Neverenoughbiscuits

Completely agree, I roast a chicken most weeks but don't have it as "roast dinner" I strip the meat so we can have it in sandwiches/salads/quesadillas etc in the week and boil the bones up for stock
a whole chicken is cheaper than pre-butchered and it only takes an hour in the ninja and takes so much better than precooked from the supermarket

JandamiHash · 09/03/2025 19:22

Neverenoughbiscuits · 09/03/2025 18:40

Also Yorkshire's are not for roast chicken. Beef only in this house.

Nonsense. Of course they are! I’d have Yorkshire with spaghetti bolognese me.

Weddingbells6 · 09/03/2025 19:28

I’m with you, it was obvious the chicken needed cooking. I also don’t think it’s weird to roast a chicken to have on a salad at all, I would roast one to make chicken sandwiches or chicken pizza or a salad, I think I it’s weird that people think it’s weird tbh 🤷🏻‍♀️ nothing wrong with liking food made nicely and with nice ingredients instead of more easily. The skin on a roast chicken would make a salad so much more appealing.

ItisIbeserk · 09/03/2025 19:28

Sounds delicious, OP, and I would be similarly irritated. And have all these posters never come across the idea of a warm salad?

We often roast a chicken to use in all sorts of things. It’s much easier to get hold of a decent quality whole chicken (and far cheaper) than be buying random bits. We probably (sorry, the MN cliche of all MN cliches) get a few meals of some sort out of that chicken.

Semiramide · 09/03/2025 19:32

What I find weird is some people saying that chicken served with salad needs to be cold. The restaurant where I normally get a Chicken Caesar serves it with freshly roasted chicken breast, cut into strips, still warm. Much nicer this way.

Yoyokitten · 09/03/2025 19:34

It depends on how much cooking he does, and how competent he is🙂.
To be honest I'm with him on this one.Being married for 50 years I know I have to give specific instructions, preferably written down😂
