To warn MNers that if you post a link copied from your Facebook or Instagram account you’re outing yourseld

If you’re logged in to Instagram or Facebook, and you copy a link to paste into a MN thread (or indeed anywhere), anyone clicking that link can see your profile. It pops up saying “Joe Bloggs sent you a link. Add them as a friend?” and your profile picture is accompanied.

Ive seen it loads and didnt wanna post on individual threads telling people as it feels like an invitation to check out who that person really is. Posting in AIBU for traffic - it’s shocking IMO, but thought I’d warn people who didn’t realise. Not anything MN can do about it, it’s a Meta issue.

It’s not just Meta. It started as a TikTok thing.

I think that poster is just angry that she can’t now find out people’s identities. Can’t think why else she’s be so angry. Especially when she’s specifically asked me if I’ve linked to a post.

I've never seen anyone post a link from Facebook or instagram on here. Seems like a pretty small issue to be so invested in. And it is a bit ridiculous to bump a thread after only a few minutes.

That poster is inadvertently bumping your post with her objections

I sometimes link to Facebook groups that I think might be helpful to those with the same health conditions as me. I don’t really care if I’m outed. I don’t post anything I wouldn’t want linked to me anyway. I think seeing how many threads appear copied and pasted from here to the Daily Mail etc has made me very aware not to say anything I wouldn’t say in real life.

Perhaps this might help some people, though I think if you're going to use a public forum you really should know how not to out yourself if it's important to you.

I don't think it would I.D anyone would it? Unless they put a link to their own posts?

Can you put a link to one of the posts where you have seen this? Because I have never seen this happen.

I've seen quite a few links to Facebook so I think this post is useful and if you don't, scroll on, no need to pile on the OP who is trying to be helpful.
