To warn MNers that if you post a link copied from your Facebook or Instagram account you’re outing yourseld

If you’re logged in to Instagram or Facebook, and you copy a link to paste into a MN thread (or indeed anywhere), anyone clicking that link can see your profile. It pops up saying “Joe Bloggs sent you a link. Add them as a friend?” and your profile picture is accompanied.

Ive seen it loads and didnt wanna post on individual threads telling people as it feels like an invitation to check out who that person really is. Posting in AIBU for traffic - it’s shocking IMO, but thought I’d warn people who didn’t realise. Not anything MN can do about it, it’s a Meta issue.

but another link i posted just goes to the heading of the article

I don't think the OPs reactions are over the top at all because if someone was purposely trying to make me look like a dick with their twattish responses then I would get defensive too because things like that piss me right off.

I asked mnhq about this 7 years ago and was told it only show you. Might be worth double checking with mnhq

It definitely does and it’s a fairly new thing as I definitely didn’t used to.

Google tells me if you remove the last few lines of the URL it should stop it - but on testing, it doesn’t!

Thanks @APATEKPHILLIPEWATCH I had no idea. Ignore the snarky responses, some posters like to hang out on AIBU and pounce on anyone and anything. They think AIBU gives them free rein to be nasty bitches. Sad really.

So many people attempting to escalate a thread that had some mild querying of why OP was seeming a bit over zealous into a gigantic fight.

Nobody had a go at OP, pretty sure nobody who did query the quick bumping is interested in said attempts to incite rage. It's as bemusing as the original bumping.

This is what people see if you copy and paste a link from Instagram and it’s the same for Facebook

I’m really not sure what there is to be bemused at TBH. Other than the fact someone got upset over a thread bump and asked me to out myself. What kind of point do you think a poster like that is making?
