To warn MNers that if you post a link copied from your Facebook or Instagram account you’re outing yourseld

If you’re logged in to Instagram or Facebook, and you copy a link to paste into a MN thread (or indeed anywhere), anyone clicking that link can see your profile. It pops up saying “Joe Bloggs sent you a link. Add them as a friend?” and your profile picture is accompanied.

Ive seen it loads and didnt wanna post on individual threads telling people as it feels like an invitation to check out who that person really is. Posting in AIBU for traffic - it’s shocking IMO, but thought I’d warn people who didn’t realise. Not anything MN can do about it, it’s a Meta issue.

Metas own page says that your profile can be shared when you share a link. That’s what the igsh part of the url is. It does happen

Its nothing to do with MN, they can’t control what happens when you go to another website

I tried taking out the bits after the slash and it still doesn’t work.

no but i shared something before via fb and due to this thread i reported it, they told me they couldnt see it

No they’re the hellomumsnet account that pops up and says the reel was shared by.

No. That’s the video I copy and pasted. “Hellomumsnet” is a burner account I created

Unless the MN person was logged into their own Facebook account it won’t pop up and it also won’t be visible to them

Have you clicked the link previously or aren’t logged in, regardless though. This is an instagram feature not something the poster is making up, instagram has a page explaining that your profile can be shared, when you share a link, that’s what the igsh part of the url is for

Idk why this thread has caused such issues and disbelief.

OP is sharing a thing that is not made up, it’s an actual feature of instagram, detailed on their site, well documented on Reddit people complaining about it etc

People have shared ig posts on mumsnet without knowing, I’ve told someone months ago that it was showing for them, does it show everytime in every situation? No but it’s worth knowing as it does happen and people clearly don’t know about judging off the reactions of this thread

I’ve just tried and it doesn’t show the account it came from for me either, and I am logged in. Just takes me straight to the video.

Could be because it’s not a recently created link (a PP suggested this needs to be the case although I’m not sure what Meta’s definition of “recently” is).

The one I shared yesterday doesn’t show anymore. Must have a time limit on showing who shared it.
