To warn MNers that if you post a link copied from your Facebook or Instagram account you’re outing yourseld

If you’re logged in to Instagram or Facebook, and you copy a link to paste into a MN thread (or indeed anywhere), anyone clicking that link can see your profile. It pops up saying “Joe Bloggs sent you a link. Add them as a friend?” and your profile picture is accompanied.

Ive seen it loads and didnt wanna post on individual threads telling people as it feels like an invitation to check out who that person really is. Posting in AIBU for traffic - it’s shocking IMO, but thought I’d warn people who didn’t realise. Not anything MN can do about it, it’s a Meta issue.

Not sure why you’re getting such dickish replies.

You’re literally just trying to help people from outing themselves.

I guess some people will try and argue with a brick wall.

ThePoshUns · 09/03/2025 13:13

I've noticed this too OP, and fair play to you for pointing it out. It's happened a few times on links I've clicked on. Not sure why some posters feel the need to be so arsey to you 🙄.

BrummiMummi · 09/03/2025 13:13

Thank you for the info, unlike some I appreciate it!

OneFineDay13 · 09/03/2025 13:14

Thank you for bumping and making this thread !

ThePoshUns · 09/03/2025 13:16

If I posted a link to something on instagram and you clicked on it it will say' Poshuns posted this link do you want to follow her?'
That's all the OP is saying . Trying to be helpful.

APATEKPHILLIPEWATCH · 09/03/2025 12:46

My sincerest apologies my trying to be helpful everyone. I do hope you overcome your injuries from the offence taken.

Ive seen loads of posts linked to Insta and Facebook 🤷‍♀️

Seriously that second poster wasn't being goady. It's great you've posted this people need to know but your reactions are a bit over the top for fairly tame AIBU replies. Pot and kettle.

SapphireOpal · 09/03/2025 13:18

BatchCookBabe · 09/03/2025 12:57

I don't think it would I.D anyone would it? Unless they put a link to their own posts?

Yes, it would. That's literally the whole point of this thread.

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 09/03/2025 13:20

I found this out a couple of days ago and can’t work out how to do links without sharing my name. There is a way apparently.

So, thank you for this post, sorry you’ve had weird replies, I’m not sure why really. Lots of people are angry with their lives, or their families, or the world in general, and lashing out at someone, anyone, is a way they burn off some steam. It sucks to be on the receiving end of it like you are (and a few other Mumsnetters have been in the last few days that I’ve seen) but you could have not bothered, and let people find out the hard way. So thank you!

HateLongCovid · 09/03/2025 13:23

BUMP! 😂

JaninaDuszejko · 09/03/2025 13:25

Thanks for posting this, I didn't know that.

I've never seen anyone post a link from Facebook or instagram on here. Seems like a pretty small issue to be so invested in. And it is a bit ridiculous to bump a thread after only a few minutes.

I've seen it loads on here. People showing things re celebrities, it also happens a lot with people showing house reno ideas or fashion etc.

I don't know why people are being so snarky about this. If it doesn't apply to you, who cares. If it does, OP has saved you potentially outing yourself.

No harm done and while bumping your own post seems a bit naff, it's hardly the MN crime of the century.

ilovesooty · 09/03/2025 13:34

backtothemeadow · 09/03/2025 13:10

I didn’t know and I’m grateful.

Fair enough

TheAlertFinch · 09/03/2025 13:38

Bump.

Battyasfeck · 09/03/2025 13:42

I did this myself about a year ago (Instagram link) without realising and someone was kind enough to point it out to me. I think within 2 hours, the post was deleted but in that time, I had probably about ten new followers (that I got shut of straight away). I learned my lesson but wish I had seen a post like the OP’s beforehand. Very helpful!

DappledThings · 09/03/2025 13:46

Nobody said it was. Asking why someone's bumped their own post almost immediately after making it isn't telling them off, accusing them of crime of the century, haranguing them or being angry or offended.

Why so much overreaction?

Thirteenblackcat · 09/03/2025 13:48

Thanks for posting. I wasn’t aware that this could happen, I’ve posted instagram links as well

glacancalman · 09/03/2025 13:50

Thank you OP, I wasn't aware of this.

APATEKPHILLIPEWATCH · 09/03/2025 13:55

BatchCookBabe · 09/03/2025 12:57

I don't think it would I.D anyone would it? Unless they put a link to their own posts?

No, even if you share someone else’s post it tells you which profile shares it.

BatchCookBabe · 09/03/2025 12:58

Can you put a link to one of the posts where you have seen this? Because I have never seen this happen.

No because I won’t out someone else.

OP posts:
APATEKPHILLIPEWATCH · 09/03/2025 13:56

ilovesooty · 09/03/2025 12:55

I don't see why you think that

Perhaps this might help some people, though I think if you're going to use a public forum you really should know how not to out yourself if it's important to you.

It’s, AFAIK, a new feature. It never used to tell you which profile provided the link

OP posts:
APATEKPHILLIPEWATCH · 09/03/2025 13:57

DappledThings · 09/03/2025 13:07

Why do you think anyone slightly bemused and asking why you're so het up about a pretty minor issue is offended or angry? Your overreactions are quite odd.

I don’t thinking being outed on an anonymous forum is a minor issue.

Im being piled on for trying to be helpful.

OP posts:
Wishyouwerehere50 · 09/03/2025 13:57

If we women ( I think) were all sat in a room face to face this sort of bun fight wouldn't happen.
That's one thing I hate about the online world.

If the link thing is true, helpful to know so thankyou.
And I understand exactly why someone might be suspect if there's a bump 7 minutes later. It just makes me question intent and where the post or what 😬 it came from.

I think that's ok personally.
