I will eat a whole packet of biscuits, is that normal? Food nosie

If there are sweets or something in the fridge I really like, I will eat them all in one sitting.

Packs of six pack crisps don't last more than two days, I can't stop eating biscuits and even savory food I will pick at it.

Is this normal or does everyone have to control themselves?

OP posts:

To answer your question (so don't call me miserable) I have one biscuit if I have a biscuit with my tea.

I don't think'ohhh, only have one biscuit' though because it's just normal to me.

I think that eating a packet of biscuits in one go or six packets of crisps in two days wouldn't make me happy because that's not where I get my happiness from.

It’s not about happiness.

I think you’re right.

Eating disorders are just that, disorders.

Its not about greed but about emotional need.

I fill my void by not eating, my sister fills hers with food. Neither of us has any choice about this and to combat it takes a lot of time and a lot of therapy. We cannot help it and no amount of self control or willpower will change it.

There is a massive difference between sheer greed and and an eating disorder, and the OP mentioned control and deprivation as a child, which suggests to me that she is trying to feed that starved child still inside her. As I am still starving teh child in me to keep mummy happy and sister is feeding her inner child because she was always hungry.

I couldn’t eat a whole packet of biscuits,just 1 is enough..but I could easily finish off a bottle of wine,given the opportunity.!

kaysee01 · 07/03/2025 23:13

Are you my husband?

Halfemptyhalfling · 07/03/2025 23:14

Ultra processed food destroys some peoples feelings of being full so more likely to keep eating. It can be binge eating especially if stressed
I find I have to avoid them in the house

Did I just post twice without realising it?! 😅

TerrysNeapolitan · 07/03/2025 23:16

No. We still have Christmas chocolate, cake and biscuits presents here, they will probably still be here in June!

I don’t think there is anything wrong with eating a pack of biscuits

you’re overthinking it and letting the orthorexics get to you

Biscuits are junk food. Eating a whole packet of them will cause a massive insulin spike. Of course there’s something wrong with that.

That’s a bit deep of an answer for why is the term now food noise. No mention of eating disorders.

Americano75 · 07/03/2025 23:18

I had to give up chocolate 2 years ago because I have no 'off' button, I also gave up alcohol and cigarettes 20 years ago for the same reason.

It may not be 'normal' to eat that whole packet in one go but I also think it's shameful to use words like 'disgusting' or 'lack of control' or 'greedy' in relation to this topic.

PinkiOcelot · 07/03/2025 23:20

Just as an aside, I was at my SW group last night and there was a small box on the table. There was a sheet beside it saying that whatever was in the box had more syns than a McDonald burger and chips, McFlurry and a drink, an Italian restaurant lasagne, tiramisu and red wine and a few other examples. It was a packet of digestive biscuits! Not even with chocolate on.

henlake7 · 07/03/2025 23:21

I think it's normal to do if food noise is an issue for you.
I suffered with PMDD most of my adult life and felt I had no control over my diet. Constantly thinking about food, binge eating stupid amounts until I felt physically sick (then eating more). It was a total compulsion and made me morbidly obese.
Then perimenopause hit and the food noise just.....went away! It was like my entire personality changed and food just wasn't important anymore. I lost over 100Ibs and am now a size 8/10.
Sometimes it isn't just about finding some willpower or not buying snacks. I'm not surprised so many people try weight loss injections if it gives you back your personality without the constant food obsession.

Devianinc · 07/03/2025 23:22

I can honestly say that I can’t just keep eating chips or whatever but I’ve seen millions of people devour a large bag of Doritos, pringles, Oreos or whatever. Your normal. Everyone thinks I’m weird. I just get totally board with the same flavor.

I mean, it is greedy to eat so many treats at once. It’s literally the dictionary definition, I don’t think there’s any need to sugar-coat it, if you’ll excuse the pun.

DevilledEgg · 07/03/2025 23:23

I can inhale a pack of Jaffa cakes without even noticing I'm eating, though when I realised I'd done it I'd not eat my next meal. You are not alone. I've always had food issues though, probably stemming from the way we were treat around food when we were younger. The "eat or go hungry" stance really doesn't work when you cant tolerate the texture of something. I remember being 5 or 6 and the bread was wrong and I wasn't allowed to spit it out (cause all bread is the same) so I sat with a piece of bread in my mouth for half an hour cause I couldn't swallow it. They relented eventually cause it was time to go and I took a banana to school. As soon as I had a smidgen of autonomy I started down a path of binge and fast disordered eating. I don't fast so much now and eat my main meals but there was a time I'd binge when people were looking and starve myself the rest of the time.

It's probably considered abuse by today's standards but was fairly regular parenting then

Perfectlystill · 07/03/2025 23:26

I love food but would never eat a whole packet of biscuits or six pack of crisps. It's just too much. It would make me feel disgusting.

Sometimes - most days - I want to eat more than I should. So I try to control myself. Mostly this works, and I'm happy that I reined myself in. Sometimes it doesn't and I feel revolting.

SamwiseTheBodyguard · 07/03/2025 23:26

Covertcollie · 07/03/2025 21:57

Is ‘food noise’ the modern, trying-to-be-more-socially-acceptable phrase for insatiable greed?

No because you can experience the constant thoughts of food and the constant cravings without caving into those cravings all the time.

As a former binge eater, I managed to stop binging and eat a much better diet but still was always thinking about food, what I should eat, what I shouldn't, what I would eat if I were slim and never put any weight on, thinking about what other people were eating and how they were able to be that size when I don't eat it and am nearly twice as big. It's exhausting.

This was one of the news stories on the radio today. Apparently some humans and all ( I think) labradors have a gene which means they can't regulate their appetite. They just need to keep on eating till everything available is gone!

I think I'm a Labrador.

I have a compulsion to eat and never feel full up

peachgreen · 07/03/2025 23:30

I would be the same. As a result, I don’t have crisps or biscuits in the house. Weirdly, sweets, chocolate and cake is totally fine, I can resist those easily.

I genuinely think some people get this and others don’t. If I had a six pack of crisps in the house, it would be literally all I could think about. It would distract me from work. Possibly even sleep. I’m absolutely fine if they’re not here, but there’s no way I could just leave them sitting in a cupboard.

sunleopard · 07/03/2025 23:31

I can eat a whole packet of biscuits in one sitting but I don’t do it every time. Things like M&S choc chip cookies or Dutch shortbread just vanish!
I’m less keen on boring biscuits that remind me of work meetings (bourbon creams or digestives).

My grandmother’s love language was all about feeding us loads of biscuits and cakes (almost Bruce Bogtrotter-esque) and my siblings and I were encouraged to eat lots, I am a bit horrified if I think of the sheer amount we used to eat in one go.Whether I would have had such sugar cravings otherwise who knows.

I have never really thought of it as a problem as I am slim but I know it’s not good for my body so I aim to fill up on healthier food before eating my chocolate. I don’t really track what I eat but that’s my effort to reduce the crap food. I’m not interested in cutting it out, I enjoy it a lot.

Genevieva · 07/03/2025 23:32

Eat real food and eat up won’t have room for biscuits.

M&S Collection are pretty good but only some brands of tortilla chips are entirely UPF free and very good with an M&S jar of salsa or any of their dips to be honest. Shortbread is the best biscuit for no ultra processed ingredients.

Thank you.

Do you happen to know if any sold by Tesco are UPF free? I would have asssumed crisps were UPF Just because of the treatment of the potatoes?

As I'm low carb (for health reasons) any kind of thing like that is a very rare treat anyway.

I can't get to M&S at the moment, but have Tesco deliveries. So just curious...

NewMarmiteJar · 07/03/2025 23:37

There are certain occasions when I'm unable to not eat the whole packet.

Tonight was one.

I never used to be that bothered about food. I liked it, I ate well but I didn't really think about it. Then I was in an abusive relationship where my ex used food as control and there regularly wasn't much. I was 7st 8 when I left him. If I was allowed to eat, I ate as much as possible while I could. I remember being invited to a party with my son and praying that the adults would be allowed to eat what was left when the kids had done (they were!) After that I have never been the same about food. I can't leave any and kind of have to eat what's there. I worry about access to food if we are travelling and need to plan out possible places, shops etc. It's like the fear of not having enough to eat is still there somewhere. I have to control intake of things like crisps by not buying them.

I'm sorry that you went through that. I'm very glad you found a way of making him your ex.🤗

there are all sorts of reasons people eat and use food for comfort, some people will never understand and just preach & be sanctimonious.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/03/2025 23:42

I used to be like this.

Then l gave up refined sugar. And now l don’t have much interest. I’ve never overeaten since l did it. Biscuits and chocolates now last until sometimes we throw them out.

l’m amazed at the difference it’s made. I used to be obsessed with shortbread. Could just keep eating it. There was a pack in the cupboard the other week. I think l had one bar.

The thought of sickly sweet chocolate biscuits now puts me right off. I could have eaten an entire pack in one go.
