I will eat a whole packet of biscuits, is that normal? Food nosie

If there are sweets or something in the fridge I really like, I will eat them all in one sitting.

Packs of six pack crisps don't last more than two days, I can't stop eating biscuits and even savory food I will pick at it.

Is this normal or does everyone have to control themselves?

They exercised much more in their everyday lives.

They also had incredibly high levels of heart disease, heart attacks and stroke, premature death from all manner of things including environmental factors and accidents. We are much healthier now than people in the 50s.

Not really. One or two biscuits at a time. Ditto sweets.

Tesco Finest Lightly Sea Salted Crinkle Cut Crisps.

Ready salted is usually the safest bet.

Thank you

funnily enough those have been the ones I've got if I have got any over the past couple of years .

they're not always the crinkle cut. I wonder if there's much difference in them.

I'm not sure thats true

Chuchoter · 07/03/2025 21:53

I don't. I have self control. If I didn't I wouldn't buy food that I knew I would eat in one go.

I've kept slim all my life as I have a greater desire to maintain my figure than I have to satisfy any taste.

I do eat whatever I want but I just don't eat a lot of it.

As Kate Moss is attributed to saying (may or may not be true) - Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

I assumed this was a joke.

Binge eating is not normal but generally not frowned upon on mumsnet

MerryMeet · 08/03/2025 13:48

There are numerous emotive words such as greed and self-control in this thread. I recommend following Joshua Hills Nutrition on Facebook or Instagram. He has a MSc in nutrition and specialises in difficult relationships with food.

Inmydreams88 · 08/03/2025 13:53

If there’s chocolate, biscuits, crisps in the house then I would eat them pretty quickly, that’s why I don’t buy them or have them in the house now.

28Fluctuations · 08/03/2025 13:57

It's clearly quite common. Given the levels of obesity and all the warnings about UPF, etc. Plenty of studies show that self control is a poor answer to this problem, as so many people cannot overcome the desire to eat the whole packet of biscuits, etc.

Calling it greedy is ignorant virtue-signalling.

I am well within my NHS-designated weight range. I would never accuse someone bigger than me of being greedy.

I couldn't eat a whole pack of biscuits as I'd feel sick, but could easily eat a tube of pringles in one go and could eat half a loaf of buttered toast, slice after slice, so I don't think you're that unusual OP. A lot of us have to constantly choose between what we want to eat and what we want to weigh.

Dr van Tullekan in Ultra Processed People described how the makers of Pringles worked on the tube so your hand would fit in to get them! These companies spend billions on research and advertising, they wouldn't do it if they knew it didn't work. It's why the Easter and Christmas 'food' is available early, they know plenty of us eat and replace.
Hats off to those of you who can resist the stuff!!

OneTC · 08/03/2025 14:15

I don't buy:

Biscuits (any)
Cereal (any)
Kit Kats
Maltesers

Because I just eat them all in one go and although that's not really a problem for me, it just doesn't feel right.

Well, I don't think people should frown upon it. It's a form of compulsive behaviour. It needs to be helped, not ridiculed.

Are you me? I'm awaiting an adhd diagnosis and it all makes sense. Hopefully my food obsession will stop

Yep! It was a revelation to me! It all made complete sense!

It's the search for the dopamine hit that you're missing apparently (especially when it comes to sweet foods). For me, it was ANY food.

I was out meeting a friend for a coffee and she chose a cooked breakfast too. It looked lovely but I didn't bat an eyelid when I decided not to order one or even crave one it because I just didn't feel hungry. I didn't miss it either.

I now only usually quite happily eat two meals a day and only when I feel hunger pangs.

That would never, ever have happened before.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 08/03/2025 14:25

I did up until recently. I'm diabetic now. It's amazing how quickly food noise just goes away when the alternative is dying early.

It is, google any stats- life expectancy then vs now, heart disease then vs now…. How could you think we are less healthy than people in the 50s?!

I know- the orthorexic talk on Mn is one thing but how awful to bring children up using language like that

myplace · 08/03/2025 14:29

The distracting sense of hunger while you wait for a meal…

I have that all the time, including when I’ve just eaten a great balanced home made meal. I enjoy it, have loads of vegetables, the right amount of healthy fats/carbs/protein, and sit looking at my empty plate wishing I could have more and wondering what I can eat that won’t ’bust the bank’ calories wise.

I’m just not ever satiated.

Quacksalver · 08/03/2025 14:34

Every time. I have come to accept that I have no self control re. junk food. I make rules around it (like a problem drinker would) Addictions are addictions.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 08/03/2025 14:41

I ration myself with zip lock bags and I literally write the days of the week on them.

It sounds stupid, but it's one of the only effective strategies I've found for my binging.

If I know that I am taking tomorrows food, it stops me. It also gives me something to look forward to each day.

I've only eaten it all once, and didn't allow myself to go out and re buy. It taught me the lesson.

So biscuits, chocolate, crisps etc. All rationed.

Now I am on keto I ration my cheese into days also, otherwise I would take some every time I open the fridge.

Subwaystop · 08/03/2025 15:10

It’s sadly “normal” for me. I believe there’s something wrong with my blood sugar regulation that once I start eating I start to get ravishingly hungry and as I eat I get hungrier! It takes me about an hour from when I start eating until this stops and I’m satiated. During that hour I feel like an out of control ogre desperate for more food and I can easily Hoover up a bag of crisps and biscuit and more. I keep relatively in shape by fighting very hard to eat slowly but it’s a huge battle. I don’t think most people understand or get what my body does when I start eating. It seems to me most people get full instead of hungrier!
