He didn’t go to Tesco?

I’ve been ill with the flu for the past few days and am in the worst of it, asked DH if he could pop to the shops and get some dinner in, and food for dc over the weekend, as we have nothing in and I thought he would stop at Tesco on his way home from work.

He decided to go to our village newsagents which sells no fresh food and spent 50 FUCKING QUID on crap. He got unbranded frozen ready meals which no one in our house would touch with a barge pole. The rest went on crisps / chocolate / ice cream / pot noodles. He didn’t even get bread (which they actually sell). Because i’ve not been happy about this he’s now gone in a mood and said he’s not bothering again. AIBU to be psised off he didn’t go to tesco and get real food the kids actually eat and not just chocolate and crisps. And now he’s moaning saying he didn’t know he wasn’t ‘allowed’ to go to the village shop and that i should have told him. I shouldn’t fucking have to tell people to use their brain.

Not well enough to do an online shop but well enough to get riled up enough to come here and post and argue with strangers about it. I'd be cheesed off too but if you're THAT poorly I think you'd just be glad you didn't have to face Tesco on a Friday night after work.

Edited

So you think anyone who cares about their children's well being is not that poorly?🙄

Comefromaway · 10/03/2025 09:33

I told dh about this thread. He was appalled that a grown man cannot take care of his kids. He admits that in the situation of an ill wife and him having to get a few basics on his way home from work he would probably go for convenience and pick up something like a pack of fish fingers (ds's favourite) and do them with oven chips and garden peas or maybe a jar of pasta sauce. But he knows the dc like that food and is it vaguely nutritious.

My dh thinks the opposite, just buy enough food to begin with

Comefromaway · 10/03/2025 09:42

So your dh is putting all the reposonsibility onto you? Nice

SwingTheMonkey · 10/03/2025 09:45

I haven’t managed to get past the first couple of pages without losing the will to live. The bar is so fucking low. ‘Poor guy did his best’ and ‘he’s not a mind reader’ were particular low points. Would posters be saying the same of a mother stopped at the local shop for a mars bar and a can of red bull for their child’s breakfast?

This man is a father. He should be able to go out and buy provisions to feed his children in a reasonably healthy way. But he didn’t. He shopped like a stoned teenager.

Op, he needs to take over the meal planning and shopping so you’re not in this position again.

cheddercherry · 10/03/2025 09:53

To be honest I’m shocked you had to TELL him to feed the kids and go to a shop in the first place. If I was ill my husband is quite capable of knowing/seeing what we do/ don’t have and knowing in advance that our child will need to eat. I wouldn’t be ill and worrying about whether or not he had the common sense to know the kids need some tea.

It sounds exhausting and I wouldn’t have the energy, whether well or not, to parent an apparently grown man. Jesus.

CalicoPusscat · 10/03/2025 09:55

@Comefromaway yep and it wouldn't cost £50.

Comefromaway · 10/03/2025 10:07

If it wasn't for ds who has arfid then dh would probably have produced a full roast dinner ingredients to be fair. (and for less than £50)

Boomer55 · 10/03/2025 10:13

I’d do an online shop. Problem sorted. 🤷‍♀️

Yes it would have been a problem sorted, so why didn’t her husband do that?

Are you married to a useless man as well then?

She already did an online shop. First delivery slot was Sunday.

OP says they live rurally, there were no slots for the day after and Tesco Whoosh wasn't an option. Which suggests it might not be quite that simple. These things are much easier to sort out if you live in a more built up area!

Comefromaway · 10/03/2025 11:12

What on earth is Tesco Whoosh by the way?

Comefromaway · 10/03/2025 11:16

I guess this is why I don’t know what whoosh is

He didn’t go to Tesco?
Thelnebriati · 10/03/2025 11:16

Tesco Whoosh is delivered within an hour, often by bike so its OK for a small top up shop. Delivery is about £2 if you spend over £15.

Comefromaway · 10/03/2025 11:16

Lol.

Probably one of those things that's only viable in more built up areas. Never actually used it myself, but I can see a Tesco from my upstairs window so I might count as too built up in this case!

Redpeach · 10/03/2025 11:21

Why didn't she do that?

Because she was sick and supposedly has another fully functioning adult in the home who can shop online for adequate food for a few days? Oh wait, that’s the whole point of the thread 🙄

ThePartingOfTheWays · 10/03/2025 11:26

In any case, it likely wasn't an option for either of them.

They live rurally. OP has said there were no supermarket delivery slots for Saturday, and Tesco Whoosh doesn't cover her area. It might be possible that some retailer or other would've had some availability if they'd checked every single one of them, but this would've likely been much more time consuming and expensive than DH stopping off on the way home from work like he'd been asked.

richardosmanstrousers · 07/03/2025 20:30

You are being ridiculous. He did what you asked.

Wow yea low bar. Computer said go to shops buy food. FFS

Rubyupbeat · 10/03/2025 11:40

Oh come on, he made a ,'mistake' he will know for next time.
You sound really disrespectful about him.

I agree - there is so much vitriol on this thread

Tabbsi · 10/03/2025 12:05

Does he not ever do the supermarket shop? How can he not 'know' what to get. That's what I'd be addressing!
