He didn’t go to Tesco?

I’ve been ill with the flu for the past few days and am in the worst of it, asked DH if he could pop to the shops and get some dinner in, and food for dc over the weekend, as we have nothing in and I thought he would stop at Tesco on his way home from work.

He decided to go to our village newsagents which sells no fresh food and spent 50 FUCKING QUID on crap. He got unbranded frozen ready meals which no one in our house would touch with a barge pole. The rest went on crisps / chocolate / ice cream / pot noodles. He didn’t even get bread (which they actually sell). Because i’ve not been happy about this he’s now gone in a mood and said he’s not bothering again. AIBU to be psised off he didn’t go to tesco and get real food the kids actually eat and not just chocolate and crisps. And now he’s moaning saying he didn’t know he wasn’t ‘allowed’ to go to the village shop and that i should have told him. I shouldn’t fucking have to tell people to use their brain.

Agree.
I would be absolutely furious at such stupidity.
How men behave while you are ill tells you who they are.

Op's is a useless lump of a shit husband and father.
Ugh.

This post has been a godsend for all the men-hating mumsnetters.

Laurmolonlabe · 09/03/2025 08:08

Very annoying, it sounds like DH isn't very fond of home cooking and would rather eat snacks.
My other takeaway from your story is you have a husband , children and live in a village but you have no food in? Why not ? You should have full cupboards and a full freezer which could be pressed into service in a situation like this- all he should have had to buy is milk , bread and possibly vegetables if you are ill for more than a few days.

Really ?
We buy wholemeal seeded and it lasts in our fridge, we’ve been doing it for years
No idea about white in the fridge although we do freeze white rolls for lunches.

Decided to Google it 😆
store bought bread lasts 7-14 days in the fridge and all breads last several months in the freezer ….

Edited

Not sure what is meant by "store" bread but we don't call shop stores in the UK so probably US bread which is certainly not what I like. Brands may last a while but freshly baked bread does not last or taste good if it has been in the fridge for a week IMO.

Properjob · 09/03/2025 08:32

What a load of shitty comments on here by people who obviouslv don't care about good quality delicious food, or whether men should Bother. Don't do any of his washing OP just say what's wrong with smelly creased clothes? That's the equivalent of what he's done to the family food. Pathetic

JJMama · 09/03/2025 08:35

He’s done a student shop. Bit pathetic that a grown man can’t feed his family, quite literally. Absolutely bizarre that he’d waste money on silly snacks. Corner shops are great for things you’ve run out of - top up shops, or if you actually want snacks. It would give me the ick if the father of my children couldn’t shop and cook for our children.

However, YABU to say that your children only eat branded food, they’re not gonna die from non branded products 😅

Out of curiosity, I asked DS who is 8 what food he would buy for 2 days worth of meals. He immediately reeled off crepes for breakfast, toasties for lunch and for tea chicken wraps and tacos. He named each individual ingredient he would need. It really shouldn’t be that hard for a grown man to figure out what to feed his children for 2 days without being given a shopping list.

👏👏👏
Exactly! Can we stop believing grown ass men when they pretend they can't do simple tasks? They just can't be arsed and act like dickheads. Sorry, this makes me so furious! If my partner behaved like this, I'd have fucked off a long time ago!

Should have told him where you wanted him to go shopping, he's not a mind reader FFS.

He's also not a toddler and presumable capable of knowing what a supermarket is. She shouldn't have needed to even 'ask' him to go food shopping in the first place.
I'm guessing he's managed getting to adulthood by knowing people need food and nutrition on a regular basis.
Pretty sure he's also capable of looking in the cupboards while his wife is sick and finding out what's needed

If he was sick would you be telling her she's not a mind reader and he should have spelled out specifically what she needed to do to feed the family

Thought not

How is it 'man hating' to be fed up of living with people barely competent in any given situation that isn't about them or their needs.
Women are rightfully getting mad instead of putting up with more and more years of this shit

Stop treating men like incapable, little boys. You've created a huge problem for wives and mothers today. I'm saying this as a mother of 2 boys!

I haven’t actually. I raised a son as a single mother. He lives alone and cooks from scratch every day. No lucky woman is affected by his domestic competence which began when he took over his own laundry at 15 of his own volition.

I rest my case. Just something I have noticed on Mumsnet and find it very depressing. It seems to be turning into a club for people who like to denigrate men.

Store bought means bread you buy from a shop as opposed to bread you make yourself or buy freshly made from a bakery or in store freshly made bread.

Our seeded, which we put in the fridge, is bought from Aldi or Lidl, ready sliced.
We occasionally buy a freshly made tiger loaf and put it in the freezer if we can’t get to the shops every week as well. All fine. We started doing this during Covid for obvious reasons ( couldn’t get deliveries here )

Why do you think it’s man hating to see deliberate incompetence stemming from men pretending they don’t know how to meet basic household needs?

Because words like deliberate and pretending are used perhaps?

Do you not know what deliberate/weaponised incompetence is? You do know men’s brains aren’t actually built different, that ones like the OP’s husband are perfectly capable of knowing how to shop for the family but choose to do a poor job so it’s not expected of them again. Or do you genuinely believe that men are deficient in their brain power when it comes to meeting household needs?

You can buy what you want but many other people including me prefer freshly baked bread so buy it more than once a week. My point is that buying more than once a week is not a sign of "inefficiency".

I haven’t mentioned inefficiency re shopping habits.
If people can and prefer to shop every day or once every two weeks that’s their choice

If I want really fresh bread I make my own or if I can’t be bothered to kneed it use the bread machine or make soda bread 😋
Each to their own

WilfredsPies · 07/03/2025 23:54

Do you not realise that having nothing in means literally nothing for so, so many people? Nothing in the freezer, nothing in the fridge and nothing in the cupboard. Nothing. They aren’t playing dinner roulette; there’s usually a reason they have no food in the house they can make a meal with. And there wouldn’t have been that much to start with to run it down from. It’s great for you if that’s something that is unimaginable to you. But there’s no need to pretend to be stupid about it.

And who the fuck has a pantry unless you’re rich or Nigella Lawson?

Settle down. We call it a pantry. And I’m not stupid. If there was money to do a shop , why was there nothing in the house as you say?

I am sure people know things last longer if stored in the fridge of freezer. Not all bread tastes the same if it is though.🙄
