To suspect the "deal" between the US and Russia Greenland for Ukraine?

FancyRedRobin · 05/03/2025 09:02

The way things are shaping up I'm beginning to think the USAs negotiations with Putin were for USA to stand aside and let Putin have part of Ukraine and for Russia to support the US to take Greenland.

if the world wants to dismiss America’s role on the global stage, then good luck with NATO when the tanks start rolling from russia.

The U.S. has been the backbone of Western security for decades, pouring billions into European defense, keeping Russia in check, and preventing conflicts from spiraling out of control.

Let’s not forget that without America, Europe would have had a very different outcome in both World Wars. Heaven forbid the U.S. decides it’s done carrying the burden because when the storm comes, those so quick to criticize might find themselves wishing they had a superpower on their side.

NATO is functionally dead and the US has killed it. It has dismissed its own role on the world stage.

That's it's prerogative, and it's our prerogative to react and respond accordingly.

Honestly, the more I read these disturbing comments from Americans, the more I'd like to see us ally with China against them in the short term (while investing heavily in nuclear detetents).

Seriously China?

What has America done that is anything like what China has done to the Uyghurs in Xinjiang? On top of locking up around 1 million Uyghurs they have been subjected to intense surveillance, forced labor, and involuntary sterilizations, among other human rights abuses.

And that's who you want to ally with?

the ability to criticize, protest, and even vote out leadership (however imperfectly) is what separates American self-interest from China’s iron grip.

Protest?

Trump would jump so high to anything Doug demanded when the lights go off in America. America would shut down with no electricity or oil or potash.

You seem to have a very isolated view of politics outside of the US.

Do you honestly think the US doesn't have options? Look at the Canadian-US pipeline map. Canada doesn't SELL their sour crude to the US per se. They pipe it from Western Canada down into the US to be refined because Canada lacks the ability to refine sour crude. Then we send the refined product up into Eastern Canada. The Canadian government canceled the pipeline that was supposed to carry crude directly from W Canada to E Canada. If you turn off our electricity, we'll cut oil exports to Canada. And halt the cloud computing for your banking system, because that's based in the US, too.

Also, Canada does not have the moral high ground here. You tariff our goods at up to 250%, but we put a 10% tariff on your stuff and you freak out. How about a level trading field where nobody tariffs anyone else's stuff? The world would be richer for it.

China had a terrible human rights record. I'm not arguing that it's a morally better country than the US.

The difference is one is an immediate threat that we are not readily prepared to deal with alone; the other is likely a long term threat but at least we can use the additional time to invest in our own defence.

It's part suggestion, part request, not a direction.

If only Americans were better adept at identifying dictators.

Criticise?

Job candidates at federal agencies are being questioned on their loyalty to Trump.

Among the questions: Would you be willing to serve as a spokesperson for mass deportations? Which of Trump’s executive orders is your favorite? Who won the 2020 election?

The high % figures aren’t normal tariffs but are over-quota tarrifs, meaning the tarrif rate is only charged in when imports surpass the set quota. Over-quota tariffs are rarely triggered, meaning these goods are generally traded with zero tarrifs. This was an agreement brought in by - guess who - Trump!

This is an area where the British should think twice about throwing stones, to be fair.

when its not legal or following the correct measures for a peaceful protest eg Blocks Traffic or Public Services eg school and education

Don't you know that Americans on MN are supposed to shut up, send any amount of money that Europe demands, put boots on the ground, die in our thousands if necessary and never, ever protest? After all, they are our intellectual superiors and we are just barbarians with money, so we owe it to them. Or something.

At what cost? China won't do it out of the goodness of its heart.
Hopefully not all Europeans are as morally bankrupt as you are.

it does seem that way at times, its like they say people want democracy but only when its their view and any other view and they shout how dare you say x or how dare you say anything other than trump is bad etc

Who decides a protest is 'illegal'?

The government and law enforcement, in every country, the UK included (which has clamped down on rights to protest in recent years).

Plenty of arguments to be had with the US; this is not one of them.

LovingHare · 06/03/2025 19:51

DuncinToffee · 06/03/2025 19:49

Who decides a protest is 'illegal'?

in our usa it has different rules for when protests are allowed so the law has already made those decisions
