To suspect the "deal" between the US and Russia Greenland for Ukraine?

FancyRedRobin · 05/03/2025 09:02

The way things are shaping up I'm beginning to think the USAs negotiations with Putin were for USA to stand aside and let Putin have part of Ukraine and for Russia to support the US to take Greenland.

I am sure a 6 year old would have been more knowledgeable about Viking history, 200 years.......

The original Norse settlement was abandoned some time in the early 15th century (falling global temperatures) but certainly anyone with access to Google could tell him that the modern Danish/Norweigan settlement on Greenland has been going for just over 300 years (rather more than the US)

KimberleyClark · 14/03/2025 01:37

Greenland belongs to Denmark. How can it be a negotiating tool between Trump and Putin?

Getbackinthebox · 14/03/2025 07:04

As things are continuing to develop I think your assumption is looking spot on at the moment! The retoric coming out of the White House now seems to be that they are going to take Greenland one way or another whereas the Greenlanders say they dont want to be American.

My comment was directed at OP’s original question!

it would be legal because laws and rules can be changed to allow it to happen, look at different rules and laws when we had covid ? yes different situation

Canada will not be changing their laws to allow America to turn us into the 51st state. We have a constitution.

How do you think it could possibly happen? Troops coming over the border - that would be an act of war and we’re NATO members so other members would have to support us.
It won’t happen voluntarily as the Prime Minister and provinces are against it.

Sounds like you are very much in favour of the US invading other countries Confused

Here’s the thing, if America changes its own laws to allow them to invade Canada that doesn’t make it legal.
If America invades Canada and imposes a change of Canadian law that is illegal and also war.
There is such a thing as international law and Canada does not want to be part of the USA.

TheBrightJadeReader · 14/03/2025 10:04

All this would make it legal without war

Political Will: Both countries would need strong political will from their governments and public support. Leaders in both the US and Canada would have to advocate for such a union.

Referendums: Both countries would likely need to hold referendums. Citizens of Canada and the United States would vote on whether they support the union.

Bilateral Agreements: Canada and the United States would need to negotiate and sign a series of bilateral agreements. These agreements would cover legal, economic, social, and political integration aspects.

Legislation: Both the US Congress and the Canadian Parliament would need to pass comprehensive legislation to facilitate the integration. This could include amendments to the US Constitution.

International Treaties: International treaties would need to be revised or created, covering aspects like trade, defense, and international relations.

Economic Integration: Integration of economies, including currency alignment, trade policies, and regulatory standards, would need to be addressed. This would be a complex and lengthy process.

Cultural and Social Integration: Programs to promote cultural and social integration would need to be established to ensure smooth assimilation of Canadian citizens into American society and vice versa.

Transition Period: A transition period would be necessary to gradually implement all changes, potentially spanning several years.

TheBrightJadeReader · 14/03/2025 10:05

and then its Welcome to America

none of these are what Canada wants so it won’t be happening. We don’t want to give up our higher quality of life, free healthcare, culture, language, gun controls, and powers under the constitution.

How do you envisage Canada agreeing to any of that, blackmail like a previous poster suggested?

Our leaders have already stated we will remain as Canada.

As the majority of Canadians are liberals, if we joined the US with our 10 provinces and 3 territories, the Republicans would never get into the White House again. Trump needs to be careful what he wishes for.

fair points, but how many leaders in history have also said one thing then months or years later they are all singing a different tune ? so can you be 100% percent certain and i believe the answer is no

No Canadian leader or government is going to take us to the 51st state when that would be such a negative for us.
