To suspect the "deal" between the US and Russia Greenland for Ukraine?

1000 replies

FancyRedRobin · 05/03/2025 09:02

The way things are shaping up I'm beginning to think the USAs negotiations with Putin were for USA to stand aside and let Putin have part of Ukraine and for Russia to support the US to take Greenland.

If America is daft enough to try anything military against Canada we would expect the support from our fellow NATO allies - that’s why we are a part of it.

Damn right, especially our Commonwealth friends.

Denmark is in NATO so if Trump tries anything stupid we should all help to defend Greenland as well.

MuckFusk · 11/03/2025 19:22

Parker231 · 11/03/2025 16:28

Greenland (through Denmark) would be protected by NATO if Trump did anything stupid there.

Sorry, I said essentially the same thing because I had not read your post first.

Parker231 · 11/03/2025 19:19

Greenlanders also have Danish citizenship - protection from NATO.

Ah, but you know you are in denial, and that every country is so scared of the biggest, badliest America that they would cower away and let them take what they want.

That's the Trump way, that's the MAGA way.

Why offer friendship and peace when you can wage war on your closest allies.

Odras · 11/03/2025 19:41

I don’t think Trump will actually try to invade these countries though. He either has a plan - to cause chaos, to disrupt the status quo. Or he has no plan and is merely enjoying the fall out and media attention from his performances. I’m starting to think it is the second.

He has gone even more insane

He's got a nerve considering that his decisions have resulted in innocent lives lost.

Trump: "When you take away that artificial line that looks like it was done by a ruler ... you look at that beautiful formation of Canada and the US, there is no place anywhere in the world that looks like that. And then if you add Greenland, that's pretty good."

Although I agree Trump is not sane and doesn’t think anything through (he doesn’t really want 41,000,000 more citizens skewing heavily Democratic, as even Conservative Canadians would), this is terrifying.

itsnotabouthepasta · 11/03/2025 20:28

Why are theere no political opponents in the US condemning him? I don’t even mean Biden/harris but the likes of Bush, Clinton, Obama let alone other republicans who realise this man is utterly insane.

the silence from any one is absolutely deafening.

even Mike pence issued a statement saying he was wrong about Ukraine starting the war. Surely even people like pence know Trump isn’t acting rationally right now?

Parker231 · 11/03/2025 20:31

He’s ranting again . Talking about subsidies to Canada rather than the actual position being that the US has a trade deficit with Canada. He’s the only person who thinks America is the greatest nation - I wouldn’t move south of the border if you paid me!

This really baffles me !

itsnotabouthepasta · 11/03/2025 20:41

I know our political system isn’t perfect by any means. But the fact that the parties can have a vote of no confidence in a leader and easily replace them, the fact that any law goes through multiple readings and the HoL before royal assent, and the regularity of PMQ does show that we have relatively robust protocols in place to maintain our political stability.

it’s hard to imaging the insanity of watching Trump implode every 20 mins when Gordon Brown was forced out for calling someone a bigot, Ed Milligan’s was condemned for how he ate a bacon sandwich and Liz Truss was outlasted by a lettuce!

So much social media frothing. It is so serious and frightening but it almost certainly isn't going to happen. I hope.

"Artificial line" when he wants to move the border from the natural barriers created by the Great Lakes and draw a straight line west from Cornwall, Ontario; annexing Toronto in the process.

If you think this is ‘frothing’ I would love to know what you do consider an acceptable level of concern.

DuncinToffee · 11/03/2025 21:01

Trump's 'frothing' have consequences, remember January 6th, the storming of the Capitol?

Papyrophile · 11/03/2025 21:04

I am quite pleased that we have an Islington lawyer, fairly quiet and moderate, running things here.

I completely agree @TheCountessofFitzdotterel that I am worried too, but there is a massive element of poiltical brinkmanship going on.

Yes, so grateful for our current PM.
If this had been happening when any of the last 3 PMs were in charge it would be scarier to be standing where we are- more chance of our leader doing something stupid.

50% tariffs have now been cancelled by Trump

BBC

US commerce secretary confirms plans dropped for 50% tariffs on Canadian metals

In addition to senior US trade adviser Peter Navarro, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has now also confirmed that the White House will no longer impose 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium, according to the BBC's US media partner, CBS news.

Trump had earlier suggested a reversion to 25% tariffs could happen today.

The original 25% tariffs will still go into effect on Wednesday, Lutnick says.

Update: he's criticising Doug Ford for threatening US electricity supplies but is quite happy to literally take food from starving children's mouths.

He wouldn’t give Canadians the right to vote. We’d be Puerto Rico North. He wants the Arctic, he wants Canadas resources. He doesn’t actually want the Canadian people.

haufbiskiy · 13/03/2025 05:32

I don’t understand why everyone has jumped on the bandwagon with tariffs.

trump imposed tariffs on overseas goods. Result is that it cost Americans more to buy overseas goods.

The response from Canada was to impose a charge on electricity supplied to Americans. result was that it cost Americans more. Genius.

Now instead everyone is using tariffs. Result is that it cost that country’s citizens more, not the Americans. I don’t get it. Why not just impose the charge on good exported to the US.

I felt some hope that we were taking advantage of the Trump stupidity but now we’ve completely lost that upper hand.

MrsJoanDanvers · 13/03/2025 07:52

People ‘jump on the bandwagon’ as you put it in order to make it to reciprocate and make some pain for the exporting country too. So, for example, the EU’s targeted tariffs will hopefully result in lobbying to calm things down. What do you expect countries and trading blocs to do? Just roll over?

They're asking why Governments use tariffs on imported goods (meaning their citizens pay the resulting price increases) as opposed to surcharges on exported ones (so costs are on the target country's citizens).

I think its that tariffs protect domestic businesses by making imported goods more expensive by comparison, but a surcharge on your own exports makes them more expensive vs the goods of the country you're trying to sell them in.

He does always say statehood, TBF. Canada is bigger than Calif and Calif has 52 members in the House of Reps.

This is where Trump clearly doesn't understand tarriffs

He talks about the 200% tarrif on dairy that Canada implenented, but thats because they have enough dairy production within Canada, so they want to encourage domestic sales rather than cheap imports that undercut canadian dairy farmers and ultimate destroy the industry.

That makes perfect sense. And quite frankly, it should be the case. Same as why we should be protecting British meat - because we have those capabilities to produce those goods at home.

But whacking on these tarrifs on the steel or the automotive or lumbar sectors when they literally don't have the capabilities to manufacture those goods at the same rate/output and they rely on importing those items is insane. It just puts the price up for no reason whatsoever. But he either doesn't want to, or refuses to understand this.

The press conference with his spokesperson was atrocious. I think they genuinely think the tarrifs are paid by the country exporting the goods, not the US company and consumer who needs to import them.
