To suspect the "deal" between the US and Russia Greenland for Ukraine?

FancyRedRobin · 05/03/2025 09:02

The way things are shaping up I'm beginning to think the USAs negotiations with Putin were for USA to stand aside and let Putin have part of Ukraine and for Russia to support the US to take Greenland.

Canada is in NATO - if an armed attack occurs against one of the member states, it should be considered an attack against all members, and other members shall assist the attacked member, with armed forces if necessary.

Trump is threatening to leave NATO. I imagine if you attack a fellow member, it would be an act of war.

I don't think any NATO member would give Canada any military aide if the US attacked. They'd just become next on his list.

Andylion · 11/03/2025 16:23

@LovingHare

because strictly it was once part of the usa when Britain ruled it so the uk did originally have control of it all

What garbage is this your spouting? Canada was part of the US?

I've not read the whole thread so I assume other posters have called you on this.

If you’re a member of NATO you have to give assistance - it’s one of the reasons Ukraine wants to become a NATO member - for the protection.

Parker231 · 11/03/2025 16:28

Greenland (through Denmark) would be protected by NATO if Trump did anything stupid there.

I'm aware, but it won't happen. It's one thing for countries to agree to work with the US to mutually defend each other from outside threats, it's another to be willing to go to war against the US.

Once the US leaves NATO, its dead.

Surely the US military wouldn't just invade a non-provocative, non-agressive country on his say-so?

Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Angola, Mozambique, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala and others might disagree with this.

Never been done with a white, mostly English speaking country in NATO but Americans have a long history of fighting proxy wars and police actions in peaceful countries.

You could potentially include Iraq on that list.

Edited

The rest of NATO aren't able to keep Russia at bay without the US. Even if they were willing to go war against the US (which they won't be) there's little they could do.

And lots of military equipment owned by NATO states are US made and will only function while the US provides software support. War with the US would be many magnitudes more difficult than war with Russia.

Honestly, there is no chance whatsoever of NATO intervention against the US.

Do we think Trump will attend the next G7 summit?

I don't think he could safely do so, at this point.

I’m hoping he isn’t allowed into Canada - any other convicted felon wouldn’t be.

If America did anything stupid they would only have Russia and Israel as friendly partners - the rest of the world doesn’t need them regardless of what Trump thinks.

As I posted earlier - he is stupid as are his advisors and voters. Laughing stock of the rest of the world. Every time he applies a tariff, that’s the death of another American industry.

Llttledrummergirl · 11/03/2025 17:45

You are confusing Europe with NATO. I suspect from the way Trump is behaving towards the rest of the world that Canada has more countries that would go to it's aid if attacked by Trump that you, or He or MAGA (brainwashed as they all appear) realise.

Can you imagine any country (America) stooping so low, they withdraw military assistance and intelligence overnight leaving innocent defenders defenceless and dying?

Can you imagine any country (America) stooping so low they change sides to assist a hostile invader leading to the deaths of many innocent lives.

Can you imagine any country (America) stooping so low it threatens it's close allies and defends it's enemies.

We can play this game all day.

Parker231 · 11/03/2025 17:57

With the U.S. to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian steel & aluminum starting tomorrow - how many days will it before those American companies have to make layoffs and start shutting down production?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/03/2025 17:57

If Trump tried to invade Canada his first problem would be his army, who did not join up to invade people who look and sound like them, and his next problem would be the Canadians, who would resist at guerilla level even if their army was wiped out. Even with no significant outside help for Canada it wouldn’t be a walkover.

I've said before. They would be able to take Canada. I doubt they could keep Canada.

Agree on both counts.

poetryandwine · 11/03/2025 19:00

The American military take an oath to the Constitution, not to the President. I cannot see them invading Canada.

I do see NATO coming to Canada’s defence in case of invasion. Each country is aware that no one knows who is Trump-Putin’s next target. Greenland? Estonia? Unity is the only hope.

I think both of these views are extremely optimistic.

I do, though, think there would be mass protests of, and little public support for, an invasion of Canada.

Greenland OTOH...

Parker231 · 11/03/2025 19:11

If America is daft enough to try anything military against Canada we would expect the support from our fellow NATO allies - that’s why we are a part of it.

If the US was out of NATO we (meaning all the NATO allies) would never had to back them up in any of their stupid wars again. We all know they wouldn't do the same for other NATO members unless they were going to get something out of it. So leaving NATO has benefits for the rest of us but has none for them.

Again, though, the non-US NATO members don't even really have the capability to take on Russia (who are on their doorstep) at the moment. Even if they had the will to oppose the US, they do not have the means.

The chances of them going to war with the US (and probably then leaving themselves exposed to Russia) are near non-existent.

Thankfully, I do think the chances of a military invasion are slim (though I'm close to the border and can't pretend that I'm not giving thought to buying a gun).

Greenlanders also have Danish citizenship - protection from NATO.
