To suspect the "deal" between the US and Russia Greenland for Ukraine?

FancyRedRobin · 05/03/2025 09:02

The way things are shaping up I'm beginning to think the USAs negotiations with Putin were for USA to stand aside and let Putin have part of Ukraine and for Russia to support the US to take Greenland.

Isn't he just. It's apparently beyond his ken that Greenlanders wanting independence from Denmark does not equate to wanting to be an American vassal state.

As for Chinese and Russian ships, what legal recourse would Denmark have, to stop them transiting through legally navigable sea routes?

Thing is if he crashes the economy he’s gone. Money is God in the US and he’ll be quietly escorted from the White House with the story that his health has failed. I thought we were going to have to grit our teeth for four years. After today I’m slightly more optimistic.

But he will blame something else. There are always multifaceted reasons for the economy crashing or decreasing and it is hard to pinpoint one thing.

Like with Brexit - there is enough other stuff to blame to deflect from it’s effects on the economy dispite what economists say.

He said that Trump is not joking about acquring Greenland. When asked if he expects the USto acquire Greenland, Vance said “I think it’s possible”. He doesn’t care what Europe thinks.
He doesn’t think Denmark are doing a good job with Greenland and aren’t being a good ally to the US.

Trump and Vance are as stupid as each other, along with their advisors and voters.

What he doesn’t get is that there is zero chance of us becoming the 51st state - zero benefits for us - only negatives. Why would any Canadian want to become a part of Trump’s America?

He keeps saying, "cherished". That's not true. He would HATE Canada as a State. Lean-leaning, woke, in favour of healthcare and gun control and small-c conservative finances. Like a worse version of California. Or Washington State, which he loathes.

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 11/03/2025 14:24

Aside from all of the other utter absurdities, notice that he doesn't even want the Canadian provinces to all become extra US states in their own right.

Even though Canada is the second largest country in the world by land mass and home to 41 million people from a very diverse range of backgrounds, he just sees it as a single homogenous acquisition to take: just one single extra state that he can add to his current realm and exploit for what he can get out of it.

He’d never accept us in Quebec province with French as our primary language when he’s recently ruled that English is the language in America. Doubt he even knows any French!!

DuncinToffee · 11/03/2025 14:32

From a commentator on bskyb

"The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear" is not coincidentally also what Putin says about Ukraine, so that tracks bigly

He doesn't seem to know much English to be fair.

If anyone can hunker down, be self sufficient and take a bit of hardship in order to fight off the enemy it's the Canadians.

I have First Nations friends from my time living there. They have made the point that if anyone owns Turtle Island (Canada) it's them.

I wouldn't bet against the FN and other Canadians working together. Huge landmass, uncooperative population? Good luck Trump.

Trump still doesn’t understand the difference between a tariff and a quota- American industries are going to collapse

Doug Ford will but not sure about Mark Carney.

HangryLilacGoose · 11/03/2025 16:01

If Trump actually did cause the US to invade Canada, either (a) it wouldn't be a state, or (b) it'll confirm we've seen the end of elections in the US.

There's no way that the Trump administration would welcome 40m voters who would all vote against him.

I dont understand what he thinks he's doing. He can't literally make cars in America at the push of a tarriff. They literally don't have the manufacturing capabilities to do so. By all means, wean them off the imports so they can be solely made in the USA, but he's hurting Americans just as much.

Surely all canada has to do is say to every other country, "hey, we have a 60% surplus of steel - who wants extremely favourable terms to take this off our hands?"

That's a really valid point.

Surely the US military wouldn't just invade a non-provocative, non-agressive country on his say-so? Don't they take an oath to the constitution, not the president? Similar to how our forces have an oath to the monarch not the prime minister?

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/03/2025 16:09

Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Angola, Mozambique, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala and others might disagree with this.

Never been done with a white, mostly English speaking country in NATO but Americans have a long history of fighting proxy wars and police actions in peaceful countries.

itsnotabouthepasta · 11/03/2025 16:15

bloody hell I didn’t realise there was such precedent @MrsTerryPratchett!

this whole situation is mental.

Canada is in NATO - if an armed attack occurs against one of the member states, it should be considered an attack against all members, and other members shall assist the attacked member, with armed forces if necessary.

Trump is threatening to leave NATO. I imagine if you attack a fellow member, it would be an act of war.
