I tried.

I really did.

But JFC it's absolutely awful.

"Come and watch me make the most basic of crafts while telling me how much you admire me, and I gently patronise you"

Really awful.

I mentioned this in the original With Love thread before it got postponed due to the fires. But I'm 100% convinced Netflix are deliberately sabotaging the show so they don't have to renew Meghan's contract when it runs out this year. They will pull out the viewing figures and dismal reviews as hard proof that they cannot continue the partnership. Since H&M love suing, Netflix wanted to avoid any negative PR by ensuring they have indisputable, concrete proof for terminating the partnership.

The biggest clue was the fact they left the comment section open under the Youtube trailer. It was an absolute shit show and Netflix had nobody moderating it. They wanted undecided viewers to form their opinion of Meghan by simply reading the comments. Considering how gigantic their PR department is, there was no chance that decision was oversight or coincidence.

The second clue is the format of the show. Fluffy lifestyle content filmed in LA is the cheapest thing to produce. It's essentially a hair's distance from a Youtube vlog which plenty of influencers film themselves with zero budget. Netflix dedicated the smallest possible budget to the show which they knew would give H&M the fake impression they were supporting them, but essentially it was to cut their losses and pay the lowest "kill fee" to kick them out of the contract.

I haven't watched it, have not interest in watching it. I do wonder why people who obviously dislike her are watching it just so they can slate her though? If you don't like her, just don't watch!

Genevieva · 05/03/2025 09:50

I haven’t watched it and I don’t have Netflix, so I can only talk in general terms. I think people are really discerning regarding authenticity. They can tell if, for example, a programme presenter is primarily motivated by love of the subject matter or is motivated by something else, like a desire to be on TV or make money. You may remember Sister Wendy, who was the most unlikely TV star, but her love of art history, and her spiritual appreciation of religious art, as well as her knowledge, was authentic and made her captivating. I don’t know much about Meghan, but she doesn’t strike me as a dyed in the wool homesteader, so I suspect that domesticity is the wrong focus for her.

Is it like a modern Martha Stewart sort of thing? Like a advert for her goods?

What goods? She has so far made about a dozen pots of jam. Everything she does is to make her a subject for photos, she's not known as Meagain for nothing.

I visualise a hippy sitting under a tree with a colourful handed knitted (by granny) poncho on, having a ‘smoke’. Yeah, man.

He doesn't sound very wild tho'!
I love how a punctuation mark (or lack of) changes completely the meaning of a sentence!

Laiste · 05/03/2025 09:51

I agree Nigella doesn't do much actual cooking - she tends to put stuff out of packets together.

However she's still one of my favourites to watch. It's easy to copy and she swans about looking fab.

If you want to watch proper lovely cooking it's Paula Mcintyre you want. I could watch her for HOURS.

I've only watched the trailer. And a few u tube parodies which are quite funny but a bit mean.

Absolutely, Friend and I spent and hour last night laughing at the utter wanky shit. And that complete lack of chemistry she has with any of her beloved friends.

Im indifferent on MM but this was utter shite

Great, now I'll have to watch it. I could use a laugh or twelve.

friendlycat · 05/03/2025 09:55

I think the content is extremely poor and some of the things she suggests are so basic.

She would have been better focusing on fashion, yoga well being etc.

Yep it is. Like pared down Martha Stewart, which makes it quite boring. Like she doesn't want to go over the top and she is down to earth, but it doesn't offer anything...

I don’t necessarily disagree with the sentiment but this doesn’t look like a particularly cheap show.

Hiring the location would have been tens of thousands, and the production values are high, plus all the home economists making the food, etc.

It’s not drama budgets, but comparing it to You Tube bloggers isn’t accurate. For a start, they would have paid union rates, which are decent. Vloggers don’t.

Also, ‘M&H’ love to sue is a bit disingenuous. For all the missteps they’ve made, standing up against the shitrag red tops wasn’t one of them.

I haven't seen it, but I'm surprised how well it's been received here in the US - by viewers, not necessarily the media or critics. It's def moving up the Netflix charts.

I've heard a few people IRL (who I would not have thought would have sought out the show for Meghan herself) say they found it really soothing and comforting - all the sunshine and gardens and beautiful weather when most of the country's freezing, and cute puppies and buzzy bees (?) and great looking food and just a general feeling of ease and plenty. It's escapist. And I guess people think the crafts and dishes and stuff are really easy to follow and recreate, so it kind of fits the DIY "stay home; boycott everything" vibe going on here.

Only negs I've heard are that the music is kind of jarring and that Meghan herself seems more nervous/stiff than you'd think for an experienced actress. (But that might be improving - one friend whom I'd expect to be snarky thought she was really "funny and cute" in the Roy Choi episode.)

Based on this thread, I wonder if the show might have been marketed differently in the US than in the UK (or wherever you are) - it definitely hasn't been presented here like she's hanging with her besties or with super old and close friends, but rather more making connections and reconnecting with past contacts or having people on that she's interested in/admires. There's a lot of talk about "making new friends" and "everyone's invited!" in the couple of trailers I've seen. Paying people who fit your niche and interest your viewers to come on your show is kind of the norm in TV - or should be; I wouldn't think much of someone who expected a celebrity chef (for example) to come on and teach people to cook their signature dishes for free even if the chef IS the host's bestie. That would be really exploitative.

I haven't watched any of the other Netflix stuff H&M have done and I find that a little Harry goes a long way, but I'm tempted to put this on as kind of background noise while WFH. I'll probably watch the Alice Waters episode, at least.

I agree with this. I think the way Meghan was treated by sections of society was awful, I definitely don't think she's an intellectual or creative heavyweight though!

Wasn't she interested in "Made in Chelsea" at some point? This is that kind of format

They do something called "staged reality".

It pretends to be an authentic look into the lives of rich young Chelsea people but actually most of the filmed storylines are made up and we know they are?

Oddly watchable/addictive in a "cringe"/meta way.

I find it comforting to watch when I want to turn my brain off. I can doze through half of it and not feel I've missed anything.

This show reminds me of that....if you want something light and escapist in the background which doesn't stir you up.

It's not even her house. I've just started the first episode and no way are her and this guy close friends. I reckon she paid him to be on the show

phoenixrosehere · 05/03/2025 09:58

I haven’t seen it but looking forward to it when I get a chance.

Looks like to me she is going back to her roots before Harry. She had a whole lifestyle blog amongst other things before she met Harry that she had to give up when they married.

Fine if people don’t like it, but expecting her to be a certain way and some calling her attention-seeking is a bit off.

They are pretty low-key compared to most and people seem to ignore she had her own connections in North America before she married Harry.

Always find it telling how hypocritical some people are when it comes to her and act as if she didn’t have a life before Harry when many posters on here would act differently if it was another woman.

bridgetreilly · 05/03/2025 10:00

Such a weird thread, trying to stir up outrage where there isn’t any. Daily Mail?

mindutopia · 05/03/2025 10:02

I truly have no interest in Meghan and Harry. I actually quite like Harry and think she’s okay. But I’m not interested at all in taking a side. People love them or hate them, but I feel very neutral. But I don’t understand all this Netflix documentary, podcast, etc stuff (I know they have a Netflix contract). She was a seemingly successful actress. But had to stop because she got married. Why not act? It seems like a no brainer to just do what you’re good at.

RachelLikesTea · 05/03/2025 10:03

Watching it last night made me hungry!

As light entertainment, I thought it was quite nice, pretty and beautifully filmed but it struck me as being a new way for her to gain attention and compliments on her talent and taste.

I also felt that she came across as bossy.

dudsville · 05/03/2025 10:04

I'm against the concept of "royalty", but H&M are my favourite "royals". I admire that they've gone their own way. I won't be watching this show, as it isn't my thing, but I like that she hasn't just gone into hiding. It doesn't matter at all that I don't like that kind of show. If it does something good for her, then there's value in it for her, and that's what matters. I don't watch all of tv, because it isn't all something that interests me.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 05/03/2025 10:04

If you watch it in a normal way expecting it to be what MM intends it is utter drivel but if you watch Spinal Tap style it is hilarious.

Are we only allowed to talk about things you sign off on?

Are we not allowed to tell you to give it a rest? The constant Meghan negativity is nothing but mean girl bullies who grew up to old hag bullies. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.

How would we know we don't like it before we watch it? I can't bear Timothee Chalamet but loved him in A Complete Unknown.

Perhaps this should have been in Telly Addicts though. I thought it was.

Indeed. She was even told she could carry on acting when she married Harry. I wonder why she decided to just permanently close the door on that, it could have been a good move.

Ohshutupdavidyoutwat · 05/03/2025 10:12

It's just attention seeking from somebody who is utterly talentless. Not arses either way by H & M but just wished they'd disappear quietly and enjoy their life without the constant need to adoration or attention.

oldwhyno · 05/03/2025 10:12

Absolutely no way I'll be watching it despite assurances that it's hilariously bad.

The woman makes my shit itch.
