I tried.

I really did.

But JFC it's absolutely awful.

"Come and watch me make the most basic of crafts while telling me how much you admire me, and I gently patronise you"

Really awful.

Oh the Barefoot Contessa!

Me and one of my DDs used to watch that and laugh a lot about Jeffery. Sent out to buy a cabbage or something, through the Hamptons in his convertible BMW, and returned with the wrong thing. He's supposed to be an intelligent man in charge of a £££ company!

And all the pastel jumper wearing gay mates of hers coming over for brunch. And the beach picnics in howling gales while Ina randomly laughs her head off ... Confused😂

The desperation is soooo sad. Such a waste, the pair of them!

SquashedGrape1 · 05/03/2025 09:19

Ashamed to admit this but I actually quite enjoyed the 2nd episode. Her guest (I think she used to be in the American version of The Office) was really funny.

The first episode was horrific though.

BunnyLake · 05/03/2025 09:20

One thing I always find off putting about Meghan is the amount of gushiness that she encourages. Whether it’s her telling us so and so is the very best, most wonderful person in the entire world or having others tell her she’s the best, most wonderful person in the entire world. It’s all a bit too syrupy for my taste.

I haven’t watched the NF show and won’t be (doesn’t seem any point as it’s going to be trawled over by enough people for me to get the gist).

Sorry, why do you think might be being unreasonable? MN has a section for TV shows and a Royal Family section if it’s specifically Meghan you want to talk about.

🙄

Is it like a modern Martha Stewart sort of thing? Like a advert for her goods?

That would be hilarious given that the glorious Martha ended up in the slammer!

I quite like her popcorn from corn on the cob tip and her microwave. ;)

It's fine, very inoffensive. It should be on the Food Network, which it probably would were it not MM.

Feelinghurt2 · 05/03/2025 09:26

I really hope she invites Kirsty Allsop on to the show. I remember watching Kirsty getting things out of skips or car boot sales and 'doing them up'. The best one for me was where she taught us plebs how to polish a table. And her kitchen with the word 'Wow' on the wall. My kitchen should display a sign that says 'Oh dear'.

BallerinaRadio · 05/03/2025 09:26

Hey look someone that really honestly doesn't give Meghan a second thought and really really tried to like her TV show but is here putting a post up to bash Meghan which will invite all the other Meghan bashers who honestly really don't have a problem with her 🙄

Are you Meghan? Trying to get people to tune in for episode 2 because you know most won't bother!? :)

Fairyliz · 05/03/2025 09:27

I can’t comment as I haven’t seen it. However was it ever about entertainment and more about publicity for Netflix?
They have certainly got their moneys worth in the UK, it’s been all over the papers/social media. That sort of advertising would have cost a fortune.
Can anyone in the US say if it’s the same over there?

OrdinaryO888 · 05/03/2025 09:28

Tricho · 05/03/2025 08:42

I wager you feel I'm unreasonable for finding it awful. I want to know if others feel the same.

Nice try though. Off you pop.

Fwiw I think you ABVU for typing the words “off you pop” to a fellow poster.

As far as Meghan’s programme goes, I haven’t watched it, and I have absolutely no interest in watching it, But I applaud her for at least trying to earn her own money, rather than taking the public penny. It makes no difference to me how she does it as I exercise control over my own remote control.

Are we only allowed positive opinions on her work?

No of course not, but this would be a pretty boring place to browse if we all just posted if we were being unreasonable about not liking a TV show 🥱

It's almost as if the show isn't really the issue here 🤔

I think some people do have a problem with her and don’t mind saying so. I do. I think she’s a pretty awful person because she lies, she’s spiteful and she’s a hypocrite. If she succeeds with this show then great, it might keep her out of mischief for a while.

Laiste · 05/03/2025 09:33

I haven't watched it.

I don't hate her (can you even hate someone you don't know?) i just think it's all a bit 'Look! It's lovely me and all my lovely things!'.

It's the vibe she's always given off i think.

There's a real art to being rich (and beautiful) but at the same time coming over as humble and unpretentious. She hasn't got it.

To be fair I probably wouldn't have it either! I'd be extremely self satisfied and struggle to hide it also 😂

SerafinasGoose · 05/03/2025 09:33

It's hate.

Sick to the back teeth of seeing the unending reams of pixels publicly excoriating this woman on the www. She does not deserve it. No, she really doesn't. She's not into drowning kittens, she's not a despotic ruler or responsible for invading other countries (unlike the one her president is currently cosying up to). Nothing she's done could ever be proportionate to the pitch and volume of the sickening hatred and bullying levelled at her. Lucy Letby gets an easier public ride than Meghan Markle. Priorities.

(Were this post not on AIBU, I'd not have seen it. The gossip boards on the Windsor family are all it's fit for).

AspiringChatBot · 05/03/2025 09:33

I haven't seen it, but I'm surprised how well it's been received here in the US - by viewers, not necessarily the media or critics. It's def moving up the Netflix charts.

I've heard a few people IRL (who I would not have thought would have sought out the show for Meghan herself) say they found it really soothing and comforting - all the sunshine and gardens and beautiful weather when most of the country's freezing, and cute puppies and buzzy bees (?) and great looking food and just a general feeling of ease and plenty. It's escapist. And I guess people think the crafts and dishes and stuff are really easy to follow and recreate, so it kind of fits the DIY "stay home; boycott everything" vibe going on here.

Only negs I've heard are that the music is kind of jarring and that Meghan herself seems more nervous/stiff than you'd think for an experienced actress. (But that might be improving - one friend whom I'd expect to be snarky thought she was really "funny and cute" in the Roy Choi episode.)

Based on this thread, I wonder if the show might have been marketed differently in the US than in the UK (or wherever you are) - it definitely hasn't been presented here like she's hanging with her besties or with super old and close friends, but rather more making connections and reconnecting with past contacts or having people on that she's interested in/admires. There's a lot of talk about "making new friends" and "everyone's invited!" in the couple of trailers I've seen. Paying people who fit your niche and interest your viewers to come on your show is kind of the norm in TV - or should be; I wouldn't think much of someone who expected a celebrity chef (for example) to come on and teach people to cook their signature dishes for free even if the chef IS the host's bestie. That would be really exploitative.

I haven't watched any of the other Netflix stuff H&M have done and I find that a little Harry goes a long way, but I'm tempted to put this on as kind of background noise while WFH. I'll probably watch the Alice Waters episode, at least.
