I tried.

I really did.

But JFC it's absolutely awful.

"Come and watch me make the most basic of crafts while telling me how much you admire me, and I gently patronise you"

Really awful.

This thread is very interesting reading.

The first few pages are mostly people who watched it, and on the whole didn't find it particularly interesting.
Generally commentary on the episodes and the content overall negative but it's very much focusing on the content.

Then a whole load of people arrive who are making the assumption that anyone who comments negatively just hates her and is committed to just hating the show because it's MM and they're royal family supporters.

Which stops the conversation about the show.

If you read the later conversation then you'd think that it was a great show and people loved it and anyone who didn't like it is just being mean and nasty with no reason.
Which really doesn't match with the early pages.

But if you look at the votes, 87% didn't like it out of over 600 votes. I'd guess most have quietly voted rather than subject themselves to being shouted down.

That's telling us then! A poorly conceived mess also known as shit!
I have time next week and plan on watching it with an open mind and no preconceived ideas. 😍

I think we should always approach things with an open mind 😉

Serenster · 09/03/2025 19:49

What they were offering H&M was a ft role in the core of the RF with no freedom and fewer benefits than Uncle Edward!

Just a reminder that at the time, Edward was the child of the sovereign, a position Harry did not yet hold. He and Meghan had the same “starter home” in Kensington Palace as William and Kate (and baby George) had occupied and obviously could expect to move into bigger properties in time according to their wishes (so, they may have been offered an apartment in Kensington Palace - they obviously were given Frogmore Cottage). Harry had left by the time he was a child of a sovereign, so it’s hard to speculate about what would happen.

I don't generally understand the level of vitriol MM receives. I'm pretty neutral and look at the hatred she gets with utter bemusement really, but I saw a bit of this on tv in passing and it did make me cringe. It just came across as inauthentic. I'm sure she's good at something but this wasn't it. It was just very contrived. I've felt the same about the crapola that Gwyneth Paltrow has dished up in the past as well. Vacuous, out of touch fluff.

I do feel that Gwyneth in particular has owned her being out of touch. Is part of her business persona at this point( like when she was in court and she was afraid with the thought of loosing half day of skiing).

To be fair, it is not something that I ever contemplated , but this might prove to be a lifesaving hack during a heatwave. Citrus is a good alternative though 😄

Edited

I think I'll try citrus - not keen on the smell of lavendar.

Me too, I have never been a lavender girl. I also think that citrus may work better for me

It's possible for her and harry to be complex damaged idiots who have been treated poorly and treated others poorly AND for the programme to be an utter poorly conceived mess.

Totally. They are not mutually exclusive.

CaravaggiosCat · 09/03/2025 21:04

My little girl likes it. Mixed race woman on tv, in nice clothes, cooking, baking and making stuff look nice. A bit like the stuff we watch and save on Pintrest. I would have liked more jazz in the background but that's because I like to potter round the kitchen baking and creating with jazz in the background lol.
I do think I have been naive though, I've avoided certain threads for a long time and having read them now wish I hadn't, turned my stomach a bit tbh seeing such venom. Hey ho.

Lovely to hear that your daughter have some representation, that also counts🥰. I know some people are vile.

I might try the lavender towels if we do happen to experience a heat wave this summer 😄

The cooled idea was good though, I wish I liked lavender because it looks so pretty and I know it is meant to be calming but gives me a migraine!

I will be trying baked doughnuts though, who knew!

With regards to backing, I am going with the Focaccia, was going to do it this weekend, but the raging nausea won't let me 🤣

I cannot summarise it, please go and read and watch these things yourself and then we can have a conversation 😀

Still waiting for the links, so I can educate myself. The one you provided is no longer available on BBC iplayer.

I just found it confusing. I watched an episode and a half...she is open about not being in her own home but seems to pretend she is, as though she has forgotten; I think that's a production point though, it's hard being all homely in a staged air BnB. The bee keeping stint at the start , why bother? She seemed to know nothing and was just hanging around.
With the cooking, it's very awkward, she seems to be very unsure and while Nigella is untrained she can actually cook - no one pipes jam Megan and if they did, not like that. She's just got no flare for cooking. If you think of Nigella for cooking and Kirsty for crafting, both sound really passionate about what they are doing, whereas Megan seems to be doing it for the first time ... Half the day I was thinking "you don't do it like that" ....It just lacks authenticity.

Ihateslugs · 09/03/2025 23:49

I was also confused about the piping jam part, I just slap it on with a knife then add the buttercream. However, it fitted with Meghans focus on creating beautiful dishes, when she cut a slice, I really liked the rippled effect of the alternating jam and buttercream running through the cut cake. Might have a go myself.

Mind you, as a keen member of the WI, my Victoria sandwich cake will not wil any prizes at a show if it was decorated like that - totally against the rules!

It's not that confusing.

Many cookery shows are not shot at the presenter's house but when there's an element of lifestyle they might give the impression they are. Nigella will reach out for a beauitful bowl or a trusted tool and tell you a story about it as if she's at home, but she's in a TV set. The patio where the friends mingle and eat at the end of the show is not hers. The friends are hired actors. Pioneer woman confides in you about her busy home-schooling mum life and her children pop in squirming in embarrasment but she's not in her family kitchen, but in a lodge in the ranch - her family are one of the biggest landowners in America so I doubt my life as a busy mum is anything like hers. But that's okay, I enjoy the show.

With the beekeeping meghan said she'd been doing it for a year but was still learning.. that she feels uncomfortable around the bees but is trying to push out of her comfort zone. It made sense to me while I was watching?

Also she repeats throughout the show "it doesn't have to be perfect". It's simple cooking, well presented. That's the vibe the show was aiming for and why it might look rough and hesitant if you are expecting cheffy perfection. But that's not what she was aiming for. To me she came across as someone who has a young family, likes pretty things and simple food and is quite earnest and even a bit cheesy, and the series is bringing those things together - so in that way I can't see how it lacks authencity.

I guess it depends on what you expect when you sit in front of the telly?

Viviennemary · 10/03/2025 07:28

The Vanessa Feltz parody on YouTube is quite funny and deserves a watch.

I think I am going to try to do the cake as well - the one with the strawberries.

Seem very gnummy and not too difficult to make. I feel it would an easy way to impress my guests.

skullbabe · 10/03/2025 07:41

I rewatched Roy Choi’s episode last night - because needed to rewatch how to make Watermelon Kimchee and Strawberry quickles for summer bbq time.

Baital · 10/03/2025 07:41

You need to 'impress' your guests? That sounds like hard work. Thank goodness my friends are low maintenance, and value friendship rather than status.

BustingBaoBun · 10/03/2025 07:42

I have been having the same friends over for meals for decades and we all love trying something different in the way of cooking or presentation. No showing off, no outdoing each other, just a twist on something and having a laugh. A few years ago I got the hang of some Asian carving of vegetables...they laughed at that one!
I shall be looking for some tips on Meghan's series, I'm in a bit of a rut with it all at the mo

skullbabe · 10/03/2025 07:53

You know what - the format did feel familiar to me - very much in the style of Nigella’s recent shows with the music but with added crafting and gardening. I think the show wouldn’t be out of place on the 8 - 9 pm lifestyle slots on telly (you know where you’ll find Mary Berry, Nigella, Jamie, Stacie, Kirsty and Phil, GBBM etc etc).
