It's been panned but a lot of the press already hate her, hence my asking

Is it really that bad? I'm in my 30s and it doesn't seem aimed at my age group from the clips online.

There's one bad clip of her correcting mindy kaling on her name but I'm sure that's just been put out to make her look bad 😭

Worth a watch?

@Magnastorm "I mean, in one episode she chopped up some vegetables and stuck some pasta on top of it while talking to someone she clearly had never met in her life before.

It looked shit, and honestly it's barely a step above beans on toast."

There is loads of entirely valid criticism- but the pasta is very similar to one I make regularly. It's quick, easy, low fat, has loads of veg and is delicious. And lots of people don't know you can cook spaghetti like that. So that's probably a bad section to choose!

Incognitoburrito88 · 11/03/2025 11:22

I don’t hate her and I love crap TV so I did have a look at the episode lists… but it looks really boring. I do bake and have made my own bath salts but I don’t really see why Megan is better at it than me. If I need instruction in that sort of stuff I’ll watch a YouTube video. I’d be more interested in her doing beauty and fashion which she probably does know more about. I’m not sure who her audience will be.

Once you've got beyond pot noodles as a student who doesn't know you can boil up some pasta and veg in the same pot? I mean, really?

It's less that anyway, it's more that this was being presented as some sort of amazing taste sensation - particularly the reaction of her "friend" to it - when really it's about as basic a thing as you can make and she made it really badly.

Just like that laughable fruit platter rainbow thing and her gift bags. Who is going to watch that and think "oh yes, the think that will definitely go down well at a kids party is a massive platter of fruit and some gift bags with seeds in them"?

I just don't understand who the program is for, other than for people to laugh at how stupid it is.

Nadiaelgato · 11/03/2025 11:48

No real interest. It's not my sort of thing, which isn't a criticism of her, I just don't really care about it.

CurlewKate · 11/03/2025 12:29

@Magnastorm Fair enough. I do know a lot of people have been surprised when I cook spaghetti in minimal water to make pasta and sauce all in one pan. Obviously it's not as useful a tip as I thought it was. And saying a 20 minute low fat pasta dish with 3 different vegetables looks shit (try it!) and is only one step up from beans on toast is stretching it a bit!

But I agree about the overall tone and reverence. Tedious in the extreme.

MatchaTea1 · 11/03/2025 14:25

I think the main thing is, not many people are all that interested in her as a person as such. As Harry's wife, yes, but as a unemployed former c-list actress not so much. That's no shade towards her, simply the truth. Without access to the royal family and it's associated glamour, she is just a random rich person showing off a lifestyle no-one else can really afford. Which is fine for a bit of escapism, but there is already a quite saturated market for that kind of show as it is.

MrsSunshine2b · 11/03/2025 15:16

It's a bit boring- it's just a wealthy woman drifting around making pretty things in her kitchen. But a lot of people like watching that kind of content. It's fine to have on in the background whilst you're doing something else. I struggle to see how anyone could find it offensive.

CurlewKate · 12/03/2025 18:41

Incidentally, I'd rather eat wasps than watch the show, but some of the recipes are on the Netflix's website and the ones I looked at look pretty sound. And mostly proper cooking. No idea whether she actually made them in the show, though.

This is the problem- she's not better than you and the ideas are not interesting. It's filmed as if it's aspirational but everyone I know does this sort of thing- putting flowers in a vase, chopping veg nicely on a plate, arranging fruit nicely for a party blah blah.

The programme would be better if she had allowed herself to be in the viewer's position and invited proper experts on to show her how to do things (a bit like Kirstie's Homemade Homes etc- Kirstie plays the muppet who can't do it, like the viewer, and the guest is the expert). But instead her guests have to act as if they're wowed by Meghan making pasta or putting a raspberry on a cake- it just doesn't work.

(Disclaimer- I have no views on Meghan generally EXCEPT for when she stood up to everyone saying she had to tell the press when and where she was giving birth so they could loiter outside like a bunch of weird peeping toms and then expect her to come out next day in full hair and make up and show the baby off like a prize ham. She was dead right on that and brave to make a stand.)

NewMarmiteJar · 14/03/2025 23:22

I’ll not watch it, don't wish to pry. Wink

Maddy70 · 14/03/2025 23:52

I haven't watched the show because I don't enjoy that kind of program but from the clips Ive seen it seems harmless escapism.
I hope it proves to be very successful

HelloVeraPlant · 14/03/2025 23:56

I’m team Meghan but the trailer is cringe and it doesn’t look interesting at all sadly! Wish she would use the platform to inspire. Her story resonates with many people that have had similar experiences (not necessarily in royal spaces! - but she could really use her voice).

Odras · 15/03/2025 00:59

I don’t hate Meghan at all. I think she gets a lot of flack. But the show does not work. It is just bland. I think the problem with H&M is that they must not follow advice from the team around them. To do a show like this you need authenticity and that’s what it lacks, it’s not filmed in her home , her family is not in it, her friends do not seem like her friends. She just hasn’t shared enough of herself to make a success of this format.

Shs should have picked a different theme; like learning skills from other people,

HeathenPlayingHouse · 15/03/2025 06:47

I watched it all over 2 nights while up with my newborn.

I wouldn’t say I’m a Meghan superfan but I think she’s very stylish and I think she was treated horribly by the press while she and Harry were still part of the RF. As far as after that goes, I haven’t paid much attention.

My main takeaways from the series are:

  1. It’s visual porn as opposed to meaningful content. In one of the episodes, Meghan herself even references the Nancy Meyers aesthetic which is what appealed to me in the first place. If someone is looking for a serious cooking show to watch, I would hope that they would have the common sense to know that this probably isn’t going to fit the bill.
  2. Meghan has beautiful clothes, but they are utterly ridiculous to cook in unless you only eat beige food and drink clear liquids.
  3. I don’t give a toss that it’s not her real house, I’m still jealous.
  4. I’m not convinced that the guests are actually her friends- the interactions seem a bit too stilted. How Mindy Kaling didn’t laugh when being shown how to make peanut butter and jam sandwiches, I’ll never know. I absolutely loved Roy Choi though.
  5. There was really no need for dried flower sprinkles to be used THAT much.
  6. And finally- this show would be great to use in a drinking game. Take a shot each time Meghan uses the word “elevate”, take another for each mention of her preserves.

The show is fluff. But I enjoyed it, and look forward to the follow up episodes.

Guinessandafire · 15/03/2025 06:54

Wait..seriously a thread hinting that people are BU because they DON'T hate Meghan Markle?

Being asked to justify WHY?

This site is bonkers.

Believe it or not there are some normal people out here that don't froth at the mouth when hearing her name, and simply don't care that she has a TV programme, book etc.

I am however, starting to care about the weird number of bullies that are getting wound up by her. It's not a good look .

TENSsion · 15/03/2025 07:03

I don’t dislike her but I do think she really misjudges her public interactions.
She’s not a horrible person, in fact she seems very sweet.

But there are definitely moments in the programme that were very uncomfortable for me to watch. She is very, very American. Very comfortable with overt bragging. Terrible at pretending to be humble. Her reactions to flattery are incredibly over the top and she does come across as very self affected. The part where she melts into the fridge because someone compliments her clothes for example.
The “dear friends” seem to have only met her a couple of times. It all seems very stilted and uncomfortable to watch.

All this said, she doesn’t come across as a horrible person but I think it’s really clarified why she didn’t go down too well in England. I think it’s a very clear clash of culture.

RanyaJerodung · 15/03/2025 07:07

It's not a cooking show, it's a lifestyle show really, as pp have said. I think that's really her strength, promoting a kind of luxury lifestyle. A fruit platter for kids, all the sprinkles, it's not real life for most of us, but I don't think that matters.
I genuinely don't think she's found her groove, though, and she's obviously trying to work out how to promote herself, what to do. As someone has said, maybe style and fashion?

RanyaJerodung · 15/03/2025 07:09

@TENSsion you have a point, it's definitely cringe worthy and I think there's a cultural difference.

BustingBaoBun · 15/03/2025 07:21

Wish she would use the platform to inspire. Her story resonates with many people that have had similar experiences (not necessarily in royal spaces! - but she could really use her voice).

She would be absolutely crucified if she did anything like this. The media (and Mumsnet) would have a field day shredding her. I am so glad she is not doing anything like that but instead is doing a frothy lifestyle programme. She gets enough criticism for even doing that but the bits I've seen have been harmless and no one has to watch it!

ThighsYouCantControl · 15/03/2025 07:24

I have no hate for Meghan or Harry but I also have no interest in watching her Netflix show as it’s not the kind of thing I watch.

As for her correcting someone on her name, what’s wrong with that? I correct people on how to pronounce my name all the time. It’s a reflex action. Can’t help it.

RanyaJerodung · 15/03/2025 07:25

I agree, @BustingBaoBun . I think the victim narrative went down badly, however justified she felt, or however much some people sympathised.

She's right to move away from that. She's tried all sorts of stuff, I just don't think she's found her thing yet.

Hannah2024 · 15/03/2025 07:26

Most people don't hate her, they just find her a bit of a dreary, grifting twit, along with Hapless Hazbeen Hazza. There's a long way between "tedious, no thanks" and hate.

LifeIsShiteEnoughAlready · 15/03/2025 07:30

I don't hate her. That doesn't translate as I like her though. It's still dross. Pretend friends in a pretend setting doing pretend dull things.

Engineered banality.

Grapewrath · 15/03/2025 07:33

I like her but the show was a bit cringey. I did enjoy the aesthetic though to be fair and it was an easy way to pass the time

BustingBaoBun · 15/03/2025 07:33

I think she has found her thing and I think this is possibly it. It's harmless, people can take the piss out of it if that's their bag, but it's just frothy pap and harmless.
I hope she does more.
