AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

Meanwhile, Russia says Donald Trump's move is "the best contribution to the cause of peace".

What worries me is that engaging with the utter nonsense and lies being posted on this thread makes them seem as if they were worthy of being debated.

But then, what is the alternative? To let these lies stand undisputed?

Unless there is more moderation or removal of fake information I feel like reading mumsnet or other social media just risks filling one's brain with dross and allowing a mechanism for propaganda and conspiracy theories to spread.

Garbage in, garbage out.

What I have been heartened to see here is that the misinformation has been given the chance to be completely shot down. This in turn I feel educates others. I personally have learnt alot from seeing others come in and put them to bed too. The UK has a growing problem of spreading this kind of misinformation, so if we have the opportunity to present facts that just destroy these kind of narratives then maybe this will be beneficial and at least in small.part educate others to be able to say this is total bs.

A recent example of Zelensky and his supposed 35 m dollar house which VERY QUICKLY dropped to a few smaller houses to the friend who knows a friend whose next door neighbour...is a case in point. Immediately shut down, fact checked and person called out for their bs.

Trump is a spiteful toddler who's tantrumming bigly. In a kindergarten, his mum would be told go remove him and get some therapy. Quickly.

DdraigGoch · 08/03/2025 13:20

Crakajak · 07/03/2025 20:01

Fully agree. Who is facts checking the fact checkers. The So called BBC fact checkers have been checked themselves several times and have been caught spinning fake narratives so hey!! Anyway, it seems that Zelenski, a deeply unpopular dictator in his homeland, is thankfully being forced to the negotiation table by the combined pressure of Putin and Trump, both of whom are strictly business and as they say war is bad for business. Hopefully many lives will now be saved. Any bored mom's on here wanting other than peace and boys being able to return home to their worried families need to give their heads a wobble.

Have you been drinking?

Trump thinks he can step into Gaza.

If he leaves NATO, and all this backfires on him (9/11 super plus), I imagine NATO countries can just leave him to it. That won’t be good for many innocent people in the USA.

Serpentstooth · 08/03/2025 13:25

Are you in UK crakajack if yes, you might want to give your GP a call as you sound unwell.

aliceinawonderland · 08/03/2025 13:58

But whether one likes Trump or not, surely a peace deal is a good thing? I understood that the Ukrainian government told Zelenskyy that he must sign it?

PerkingFaintly · 08/03/2025 14:09

There currently is no peace deal, so the Ukrainian government can't sign it.

With any deal, be it "peace" or any other kind, the details matter.

The Ukrainians have had plenty of "peace deals" with Putin over the years – yet here they are, dying under his bombs; and being kidnapped from their houses and dying in Russian detention. Putin doesn't treat journalists and political opponents from Ukraine any more nicely than he treats those in Russia.

DuncinToffee · 08/03/2025 14:22

BBC Newsnight yesterday

"British troops will be a direct target for our missiles. You will get coffins in return."

Evgeny Popov, MP in Putin's United Russia Party and Russian TV presenter, tells Faisal Islam that it would be "unacceptable" to Russia if Britain sends peacekeeping troops to Ukraine

Doesn't sound like Russia is pushing for peace or planning to keep it

There is no "peace deal" on offer.

aliceinawonderland · 08/03/2025 15:21

Well a proposed peace deal then…

DuncinToffee · 08/03/2025 15:33

More evidence that Russia is interested in peace Hmm

BBC reports at least 11 people have been killed and another 30 - including five children - have been injured in Dobropillya, in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.

Across the region another six people are known to have died, according to Governor Vadym Filashkin.

There’s no proposed peace deal on offer either. Meanwhile Russian bombs are killing Ukrainian children.

Although I don’t like Trump and think he’s dangerous what Lewinsky is asking could potentially turn into world war 3.
Europe has been relying for to long on the USA
We need to invest in our own military surely how Trump is acting that should be a wake up call to us all to not rely on other countries,as loyalty can change.
USA citizens I imagine are struggling with the cost of living and maybe want to reduce expenses, usually what they give to others is the first to go.
In the UK foreign aid has been reduced so money could be spent on other things
and a lot of people were in support for that
however that will always come at the expense of countries relying on that.
Who knows what is going to happen, too many think they know what will happen but the truth is no one does. Look at covid so many would now change what they did during that time when at the time they did what they believed was right.
Scary times

Monica?

What does she have to do with this?

wholettheturnipsburn · 08/03/2025 17:27

What is the peace plan?

That Zelenskyy gives the Ukrainian territory to Russia and their minerals to the US.

A bigly peace plan. The best peace plan ever.

Darker · 08/03/2025 17:42

Of course. Then everything will be fine! The whole silly misunderstanding, forgotten.

Please provide a link backing up that the Ukrainian government has told Zelenskyy to accept a peace deal.

I haven't heard/read this anywhere.

It's been widely reported on Russia Today!

Papyrophile · 08/03/2025 20:46

I suspect a peace deal is not part of the package. Sign away any mining rights to Trump enterprise, and cede most of your territory to Putin. Go away and find happiness herding goats. Peace is a good thing @Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr but only if it is based on a balance that the combatants can accept as fair.

So far, the argument is not convincing me, and I am not Ukrainian.
