I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

Zelensky travelled to Washington on the 28th to sign a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the mineral deposits and an investment fund. It wasn't a full detailed agreement - it explicitly left much to future negotiations.
But it did include reference to efforts to protect mutual investments - ie US would step in to protect mining.

Personally I see little credibility in that given the deposits are largely in Russian territory and the US had interests in Ukraine when Russis invaded so it didnt seem to put them off in the past.

Ukraine hasn't been offered a peace deal - so they definitely havent walked away from one.

Russia's position and demands haven't been reported as changing.
All that has happened is that Ukraine has been weakened by Trump.

Russia has broken ceasefires 17 times since 2014.

The truth is that Russia has the power to end this war at any point. They could put a stop to it in the next 10 minutes, so maybe the onus should be on them?

Everyone wants the war to end, wars are terrible business. Sadly, they usually end when one side has run out of resources. Nobody wants people to be killed, but Ukraine cannot afford to have a capitulation forced on them.

The only time I can think of with a big party stepping in is with the USA slapping Britain and France down, over Suez.

Well, I don't know him personally so cannot 100% vouch for his intentions but from what he has said previously, including since Trump and Vance verbally attacked him at the White House, I do not believe he will sign a minerals deal with security guarantees.

As @Blossomtoes says, why would he?

I wouldn't say it's definite, but things have moved on and he has said he is ready a few times.

@EasternStandard but here are his statements on X - he is saying he is ready to sign it but I interpret it as saying only with security guarantees? I guess it could be read as "we'll sign the minerals deal and then push for security guarantees" but I do not believe that is what he truly means? As who would trust Trump to guarantee Ukraine's security AFTER a minerals deal is already signed?

Also, I have watched the video and interpret it as "we are ready to sign a minerals deal which includes security guarantees". Just my opinion of course and others may interpret it differently.

A treaty is not a one way street of one power disarming - but it could be breaded in that one power disarms as agreed but the other fails to do so - and both remain a nuclear power unless it is a quite unique treaty such as the Budapest memorandum
