I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

Hard to know what’s going on behind the scenes but simply taking Trump at face value isn’t inconsistent with what he’s done.

1. He says he wants to end the war.
2. He says he thinks continuing fighting is a waste of money and won’t achieve anything while risking nuclear escalation.
3. He wants to pry Russia away from partnering with China.
4. He wants to exploit Arctic oil and gas reserves and needs Russia’s agreement.
5. He doesn’t much care about the means - just the ends.

Personally I don’t think what he’s done makes him a Russian asset and for 40 mins last Friday Trump was all about the minerals deal, which he sees as a smart way of dissuading Russian aggression without formally committing to a defense agreement which he knows is beyond Putin’s red line. He might be wrong to trust Putin and he might be turning the US into an Oligarchy, but I think the above is a better read on what’s going on than him being a Russian asset.

Although the Russian invaders have also murdered journalists in Ukraine. IIRC, in addition to carpet bombing and flattening eg the theatre with children sheltering in the basement, the Russians had lists of people to target personally as they rolled in, and journalists were high on those lists.

Sadly Tatiana Kulyk was killed just a few days ago. The Russian drone targeted her home.

Right now it’s we need more money then it’s we need more soldiers and before we know it our kids will be made to sign their life away to fight a war that’s duck all to do with them. Enough is enough.
