AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

I am sorry but I have never in my 50 pus years on this earth read so much crap and seen so many hysterical posts as on this thread. its bloody ridiculous.where on earth are you getting your bizarre ideas from?
President Trump is posturing and making a very valid point to the world,us included, cannot you see that?He is taking a stand and a valid one at that that America is not the saviour of the world especially financially. Why do you all expect that country to finance everything? America owes no country anything, and why should the President and citizens of America be subject to such disrespect? Aid has temporarily been suspended. This is to force the hand of the little man running round the world with his hands out in his action man clothes demanding every other country finance his every whim whilst billions of pounds has gone "missing". Nobody, not one single country,us,France, anyone can go into this with alleged peacekeepers or boots on the ground without America no one, you should remember that.No American backing No dice and no one can move and no peace. Whilst our Pm is rallying leaders of nations no one has the money.weapons or troops to move an inch without America. Trump is forcing the hand of Zalensky to negociate. As for being a russian plant well ffs grow up.This war will be stopped round a table not on the battlefield as zalensky would like glorified by dead soldiers on the ground. I would step back, calm down and have a chill about which scenario would play out the best for everyone.

50 PUS years indeed.

It isn’t where I live. Somebody I know took in some Ukrainians and they deeply regret doing it now

It’s not a smear campaign I actually know someone from Ukraine who told me he was wealthy with several homes. I personally don’t want to fund his war but Starmer will do what he wants which is spending money abroad instead of spending it on our people. He also can fund this war when he couldn’t afford to give pensioners their winter fuel allowance. I thought there was a 22 billion black hole?

So youve gone from à 35 m house in America ...realised that was total bull.....to knowing some bloke in Ukraine who knows a man that has a dog that is related to another dog whose owner knows that Zelensky has a couple of houses...wow. Jackanory.

Macron is saying he will open the debate on extending France's nuclear umbrella to European allies, at Thursday's EU Summit in Brussels.

I think Trump supporters are huge fans of creating their ha hem the orange one's narrative; I suppose that's what they need to do to join the cult.

Oh and the White House is now negotiating directly with Hamas, so that's nice. Confirmed by WH press secretary.

sleepwouldbenice · 05/03/2025 14:49

As always I think it depends on figures you look at. Eg aid committed v actually spent and sent, military v non military, recent spend patterns v total pictures

US figure certainly isn't 360b though, how trump gets away with that lie I have no idea

Trump has the full picture of what European security costs. The US has at least 1 and often more FBM submarines patrolling near the area of conflict to deter Russian nuclear aggression. That submarine cost between $5-10 billion to build. It costs over $200,000 to run each year, NOT counting parts and maintenance, personnel costs, personnel training or salaries. A periodic refueling and overhaul runs about $1 billion. The US could get by with at least 1 and possibly 2 fewer FBM submarines if we weren't protecting you at this very moment from Putin's nukes. And that is just 1 weapons platform that the US military employs to protect the area of conflict.

Protecting northern Europe and eastern Europe, including Ukraine, against Putin costs the US a hell of a lot more than the $119 billion figure given as direct aid.

anon666 · 05/03/2025 19:55

I feel like we've been sleepwalking towards this since Trump round 1 and Brexit.

We knew there was Russian interference in both of those campaigns, but when you're trying to fight the propaganda of liars and conmen with only the truth, you're outgunned.

They don't play by the rules and so if you do, you're fighting with one hand behind your back. 😔

Well that sounds like quite the reliable opinion poll. The methodology seems sound.

Trump is a complete fucking moron and should never have been elected. Calling Zelensky a dictator when in fact he is one and not to mention the bullshit he came out with in regards to gaza. Vance is even worse his little puppet. Everyday it seems there is something new with him that makes me shudder.
