AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

Ukraine war latest: US pauses military aid to Ukraine as EU chief says Europe is 'ready to step up'

It's appalling. I really hope that Starmer doesn't keep trying to buddy up to him and I would like to see the ridiculous state visit invitation rescinded. It should never have been issued.

We have to try and keep Trump on side as much as it is sickening. I sometimes wonder if Putin and Trump, in their conversations, have divided the world up between them.

chalkiegirl · 05/03/2025 18:47

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 04/03/2025 11:40

I can understand why the invitation was issued as although I'm sure Starmer privately hates Trump, trying to maintain diplomacy to (a) encourage the US to act with integrity regarding Ukraine and (b) maintain UK and US relations for a future period when Trump's era is over, is important.

But I do wonder whether it should be rescinded now.

How will rescinding the invitation be helpful?

Time for Europe to step up. It will take years, thousands of boots on the ground and billions of pounds/euros to conduct a land war with Russia.

Edited

And we want that do we? Our husbands, sons, brothers, to die in some foreign hellhole and be sent back in bits in a plastic bodybag while we impoverish ourxelves?

It's got to stop, because i don't think we do.

It’s not fake he has several homes abroad. Perhaps not as expensive as I said but a few holiday homes

You specifically said, "How can Zelensky afford a $35 million home in the USA?"

This is fake news. It is categorically wrong and has been debunked by multiple fact check sites.

"A few holiday homes" also presents a somewhat different image to a US$35m mansion, wouldn't you say? It's a deliberate smear attempt.

Vynalbob · 05/03/2025 18:57

If ww111 hasn't started by then the only way that the Europe stays safe is to step in to help Ukraine. Together with this fiasco and Trumps trade wars I see a very much more isolated US 5 years down the line. Trumps only a tool for Putin imo and if the US loses the world's good will and respect then he's no longer an asset and Russia beats the US via a bloodless(for them) coup.
I cannot remember when I've been so pessimistic but a uncontrolled Trump is the reason...at least Trump 1.0 had checks Trump 2.0 has almost dictator level rule.

It’s not a smear campaign I actually know someone from Ukraine who told me he was wealthy with several homes. I personally don’t want to fund his war but Starmer will do what he wants which is spending money abroad instead of spending it on our people. He also can fund this war when he couldn’t afford to give pensioners their winter fuel allowance. I thought there was a 22 billion black hole?

So you started off with 35 milluon home and rqpidly dropped to a few holiday homes. Let's see the evidence first.

As far as I am aware he had a job before he became the leader of Ukraine and in so doing he may have ...and I emphasise may have ...bought a property...you know...to live in.

What do you want someone who lived on the streets.

Let's compare his credentials to the renowned conman and bankrupt trump...who has never willingly paid any worker, grifted his entire life, and abused people in every position he has ever held. So spare me the outrage at Zelensky.

Oh come on.

I’m getting tired of this thinking that any money we spend outside of pensioners or the vulnerable is a frivolous waste.

Ukrainians should not have to bankrupt themselves to fund the war. They should pay their fair share, but frankly as they’re all dying that is that fulfilled for me, and they’re the human shield between us and Russia so they absolutely deserve the money.

I don’t begrudge them a single penny and would happily go without even more for us to give them even more cash. It’s the least we can do.

Why should we get involved in some other countries war? It could end up like Afghanistan and Iraq

I think he should ask the country what they want. I know several people who don’t want us to be involved in this war.

You think we should have a referendum? Seriously? After the fiasco of the last one?

AllTheTreesOfTheField · 05/03/2025 19:12

Any referendum would be Russian/Right Wing 'botified' anyway. Waste of time and resources.

Yes because this government is not listening to what we want. I cannot wait to vote this useless Labour government out!

Murder weapons no less. Any way this war can be stopped and people stop being killed is good. Zelenski is a fraudster and a criminal. If any here want to continue the war maybe se d your own kids to their front line. WAR IS NOT NICE. ITS BLOOD GUTS AND LOSS. NOT ROMANTIC LIKE THE FILMS.

Something tells me that whatever Trump does (or tries to do) is just showing off for the press. Surely things like that have to be put through congress/senate/whatever first? In a democratic manner? He can't singlehandedly "order" things?

Do look at who he put into/removed from powerful positions last time he was president; he has prepared the ground, removing checks and balances,

I will add that Putin for all his ideology about Russia lives in vast mansion and has more money that several oligarchs put together, so let's not enter into this false narrative about Zelensky.. Zelenskys 'wealth' hasn't come about from him grifting war monies ....but trump and putin have bled their own citizens whilst living in the lap of luxury.

Where is the evidence the his fraud and criminality? If he is he is in good company Trump and Putin are masters of deceit, lies, fraud, bleeding their respective countries dry.

Please provide credible sources.

@Politygal I'm pretty sure the pp you're replying to is in the US.

They don't want that either hence no 'back stop', security or whatever euphemism for reality of what you describe.

After the amount of hatred levelled at Trump over the last months I'm not surprised he has decided not to play the game any more.

Which 'game' are you alluding to, sweetheart?
