AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

I wonder if the US public will rebel… when the cost of living goes up with the tariffs etc.

The US public will surely rebel as prices rise and they see themselves increasingly aligning with Russia and countries they consider 'the axis of evil,' while increasingly alienating their allies in the democratic world. They will have to. US is a dangerously divided society even now. Imagine another year of this. I think Trump underestimates the intelligence of his non-MAGA public. The tide will turn.

The other (unintended) impact of his alignment with Russia is that Europe will grow stronger, get organised and rearm themselves in the coming years. Canada will also.

Hopefully parties like Reform in the U.K. will lose any credibility when it dawns on people where that type of rhetoric really leads. This will also be the case with the far/right offerings in other European countries - maybe this is 'peak populism' and this madness has to happen for the wool to fall from people's eyes.

Interestingly, this turn seems to be already happening in Canada where their version of far right candidate has lost his substantial lead on the polls. Hopefully they will now elect Mark Carney instead. This is the Trump / Musk effect they didn't envisage. MAGA might be impressed with themselves, but nobody else is - everyone is sickened to the core - and Russia is playing them like puppets. The US will eventually wake up and vomit them out.

Trump is Putin's puppet...at present.

But he's 78 and it's obvious he's a sociopath with mental decline. Really hope next POTUS is better.

Vance is absolutely no better. Even worse if you can imagine that. And he is much younger.

CalicoPusscat · 05/03/2025 09:09

@RubyTuesday48 yeah - I was a bit shocked at some of his views and aggressive manner

CalicoPusscat · 05/03/2025 09:10

Trouble is Vance appears to be angling to run for POTUS

Ah, horror. That’s an emotion we use when we’ve been caught off guard. But in the realm of power, there are no accidents just calculated moves. So, you're "horrified" by Trump's decision to cut military aid to Ukraine? Understandable, but allow me to offer a little perspective: this was inevitable. It was always about securing the right position for power, not about some lofty moral high ground.

Let’s call a spade a spade: Trump is a pragmatist, and he’s playing the long game, even if you don’t like the rules. If you think for one second that Ukraine’s situation is about good versus evil, then you’re missing the larger point.

The US cutting aid? It’s part of a strategic calculation, nothing more. The world of politics is cold, and when you understand that, you start to see the game for what it truly is.

Swapping sides? Hardly. It's about leverage. Trump has always had a knack for making bold moves, throwing the world into chaos to test who will bend, and who will break. By turning away from Ukraine, he’s playing on the world’s weaknesses. He knows exactly how to push buttons, how to make every side scramble for control. Russia is an old rival, sure but the game is never about taking sides. It’s about ensuring the right side wins for you.

As for Ukraine being the "victim," well, let’s not be naive. This isn’t a simplistic narrative of good and bad. Zelensky knew, from the moment this war began, that it was a chess game and in chess, the pieces don’t all move in one direction. If the US cuts aid, Ukraine will adjust its strategy. It always does.
So, horrified? Maybe. But the truth is, you’re witnessing the next phase of a global power struggle, and Trump’s move is just the opening gambit.

Remember, the game is always more complex than it first appears. And when the dust settles, it will be clear that the real winners are those who know how to maneuver when everyone else is scrambling.

Well, we've already debated (on page 1 I think) whether or not being "horrified" has to mean that you had no idea something might happen. Seeing as you're so interested in semantics, here is the Oxford dictionary definition of "horror":

Dictionary
Definitions from Oxford Languages · Learn more
noun

an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust.

The "or" seems to me to imply we don't have to feel all three. So "fear" and definitely "disgust" covers it for me.

The rest of your post basically seems to be saying that Russia is not in the wrong for invading Ukraine, it's all just politics, Trump should do whatever if he likes and we should all just shrug our shoulders.

I completely disagree with you.

Tariffs are inflationary and will raise the prices of all goods in the states.

Where did you get the stat about them running out of money? It's not something I've heard of before and would like to know more.

If they were running out of money, why are they giving billionaires tax breaks?

justasking111 · 05/03/2025 09:51

No, it's bullying and going back on promises to other countries. It's having no regard for human life outside of America. It's having double standards, as long as they're okay f* Europe right?

What the orange one doesn't realise is that he is self sabotaging America, and burning bridges. Not all Americans agree with his childish antics, and he has completely embarrassed the United States. Anybody with half a brain cell could see he clearly set Zelensky up in that meeting. Zelensky has had no choice but to apologise; he'll be rightly thinking f** you in his head, but he isn't putting pride ahead of his country, because he is a strong leader.

What a kick in the teeth to all that were there to support America after 9/11.
He creates his own narrative, that some Americans naively believe this utter garbage without question. Most are misinformed, not realising that Trump is and has broken agreements/promises for protection in exchange, with other countries. It hasn't been an uneven playing field. I'd love to see the change in attitude of one of these vile Trump superfans should they have been born in Europe/Ukraine. Lives matter all over the world, not just in America!

Gosh, quite the crush you have on Trump. You seem to find his bullying tactics to make millions by fucking over a small nation that has been aggressively invaded by his best bro, quite sexy.

Excellent post, JadededViewer, and so much more worthwhile than the competition for how many insulting adjectives can be found for Trump

As I've said so often we don't have to like the man and most of us don't, but he's not there to be liked - he's there to get a job done, even for those who simply can't get over the fact he was elected

I wouldn’t expect the UK to be sharing US intelligence anyway. We can share our own.

I suspect this is just Trump showing off his six-pack again.

caringcarer · 05/03/2025 10:56

However much you don't like it the US has spent billions of dollars on aid for Ukraine already. It's not the responsibility of any one country to pay for military aid for another country.

Trump is renowned for name calling others what he isn't so good at, is getting it back.

You're right many people including myself have struggled that he was ever elected in the first place, but then I never thought I would see a rapist /sexual abuser become POTUS....to simply just accept that and just move on means that we have to become immune to what we see as wrong in this world.

I'm sure you would be horrified if someone you loved was SA'd and then find the abuser propelled into the leader of the free world. He should not have been in office full stop. I'm glad I still struggle with that because to accept it is to accept that it's a-ok to accept what he is and what he has done.

It's worth noting he continues to lie and cover up his strong links with Epstein, wonder why?

If he gets a Nobel peace prize for anything he has done it will debase any respect i have for that prize. Same as Time magazine. Women have enough of a fight getting through this world, getting paid for what we.do, getting respect, and not getting assaulted, mansplained or whatever other indignities we experience ...yet here we have the most notable magazine in the world saying he is the Time man of the year or whatever.

I wonder if he had raped a man would he be where he is...I think that is a very definitive-NO.

I can't get my head round letting the Biden show run and run then throw Kamala under the bus. Democrat supporters were treated shabbily.
