AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

Ukraine war latest: US pauses military aid to Ukraine as EU chief says Europe is 'ready to step up'

Meanwhile, Russia says Donald Trump's move is "the best contribution to the cause of peace".

Next up he'll cancel Russian sanctions so the oligarchs can get back to spanking some cash on his golf courses.

He was talking about introducing a Gold 'green card' , where people with a significant amount of cash can get a fast track to citizenship ? A sort of Oligarchs are us, option.

I haven’t heard the agent information before, I’m shocked but not surprised if it is true.
Trump and Vance are dangerous because they are so powerful and have a ridiculous mindset - a very worrying combination.
It’s a pity Western Europe can’t tell them both to F off but sadly we can’t as we do need their support. We’ve been far too lax about our protection/armed services for years……. frighteningly this is how WWll started in Europe, but of course Germany not Russia in the 1930s.
How can Russia say this will pave way for peace when they invaded and won’t stop bombing Ukraine - it’s would be laughable if it wasn’t so serious.

ladymalfoy45 · 04/03/2025 15:18

I don't know who we need more. Jed Bartlett or Raymond Reddington.
Although #25 Donald J Trump would be a great episode title.

@Hellohelga America backed us in WW II or have you forgotten that? They owe us absolutely nothing.

...and 9/11....the whole point was to defend each other in the event of an attack from a greater force of evil ...it used to be Russia was the big threat, but Trump wants to get into bed with Putin ( or so the rumours go) Trump probably just wants to build an hotel and golf course in Moscow.

"And the spin-off benefit for the people of Ukraine is that Putin stops mercilessly killing and terrifying them 24/7."

If that were the case then they wouldn't care what peacekeeping force was in Ukraine.

Ukraine government has approved the minerals deal and was ready to sign it - their comments are in black and white in The Times today.

I dont think Russia wanted to sign the minerals agreement - and Trump was caught on the hop and needed to blame somebody for his deal failing.

You could well be right. It was Vance that scuppered the signing of the deal with his unprovoked outburst. Actions that in any other circumstances would have been rebuked by Trump.

Technically they joined because of Pearl Harbour so only when they saw that they were being personally affected. Up until then they refused support. The US only at that point declared war on Japan, Germany and Italy however then declared war on the US.

That’s not putting down efforts by the US and their military in reaching a positive result, its just fact.

I'm pretty sure you've got the message now that we paid them for their help. And they owe us fir all we did during 9/11

Trump is siding with Putin because Putin is paying him. Through contracts and cash.

Trump is lining his pockets. That's all this is about. And Putin is happy to give Trump billions.

spuddy4 · 04/03/2025 15:19

Oh so now we are paying debts back and moaning about it but everyone is fine with giving billions to Ukraine because it's for the 'safety of the world'. You all need to make up your minds where you stand on giving away money because all I see is double standards.

Topseyt123 · 04/03/2025 12:02

Personally, I think core Trump voters are generally as thick as shit. They wouldn't see it, and probably wouldn't care.

There must be other floating voters though who were taken in by his bullshit and are regretting their choice now that reality is starting to set in. There must be! Surely! Please tell me they don't all support this arsewipe unquestioningly!!! ☹️

I think you overestimate how little US voters care about Ukraine. It is a very long way away from the US and a country many have never even heard of. Foreign policy is not a big issue in US elections.

Blimey, that's perked up my afternoon! Is there anything that man can't look good in?

No wonder fat orange Trump hates him!

Trump dancing. I guess Diaper Don can't handle heels, so envy on his part.

Do you guys want full war with Russia then ?

There wouldn't be a war with Russia if Europe and American stood together against them. Russia would back down.

Aaron95 · 04/03/2025 15:24

Stickytreacle · 04/03/2025 11:29

I genuinely think he's a Russian asset, I think it's worrying that we share so much intelligence with the U.S. We are on the brink of the possibility of a very different world in future, militarily, financially and morally. I just hope Europe pulls together and stays strong.

I really doubt he is a Russian asset. He is just doing exactly what he said he would do in recent speeches - putting the USA first (and not giving a damn about anyone else in the process).

He sees an opportunity for the USA to make a lot of money by getting mineral rights in Ukraine for no cost. He is quite prepaerd to bully Ukraine into accepting whatever deal is agreed and to cosy up to Putin at the same time to achieve it. He doesn't give a damn about Ukraine, only the money which is to be made by mining their land and he has seized an opportunity to get it.

Stirabout · 04/03/2025 15:24

Sigh

nuned · 04/03/2025 15:25

@ImStayingOutofIt but they have stood together so far and it's been three years and Russia hasn't backed down ?

Longwaysouth · 04/03/2025 15:25

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/03/2025 14:54

Very well said, Ablondiebutagoodie
Certainly it's devastating for Ukraine, whose ordinary citizens don't deserve this, but while the almost competitive hating on Trump's doubtless very enjoyable for some, the cries of Europe having to take up the cudgels are getting a bit silly considering they don't have the wherewithal to do it without US backing

FWIW I don't like the man either and it's worth remembering that it's mainly Russia at fault for invading in the first place, but as you rightly said the sponging hasn't helped and neither has the way some "leaders" convinced themselves it would continue for ever

Maybe if we hadn't spent defence money and lives helping out the Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan we might have a better equiped military now.
Oh I forgot we a one of the two random nations that haven't won a war for 30 or 40 years.

I think it is in reference to Mr musk acquiring his billions upon billions upon billions of american dollar contracts that he is acquiring while raiding the pennies from lesser mortal American citizens. ( Musky has the sweet ambition of wanting to be the first Trillionaire) Why should an American citizen get medicaid /medicare/ social security or a veteran have a job when a few well fed billionaires can travel in spacex to Mars.

Dont forget there is the added benefit of the mere mortals just falling off this mortal coil in the absence of affordable healthcare...it will save a FORTUNE.

Your American coffers are being raided and given to the south African.

What's that got to do with me? I'm British. Lots of xenophobic American haters are piling on to me because they think I'm American.

The pretence that US involvement in Europe has been for wafty philanthropic reasons is rather annoying.

The US made a concerted effort with Europe solely for the purposes of undermining Russian influence. It wasnt because they loved the architecture! Does nobody remember the Cold War?

Obviously Trump has reversed this policy and has been actively courting Russian interests.

Next up he'll cancel Russian sanctions so the oligarchs can get back to spanking some cash on his golf courses. And he'll withdraw troops from Europe and hang a welcome sign in Russian.

I was saying to DH earlier that surely if/when Trump lifts sanctions against Russia, it would be tantamount to him declaring out and out support for Putin.

America refused to help in WWll until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour - that brought them into the war. Having said that without them we’d have lost the war and be speaking German now.
We paid America back for their support for years and our last payment was under the Blair/Brown government.

Sadly there is a complete absence of reasoned argument on this thread from Trump/Putin apologists. If you actually read the post that I was referring to you might also see the ignorance contained in it.
Trump supporters seem to believe that the US are the saviours of the world and generously throw their money at us out of the goodness of their hearts, whilst failing to realise the actual reasons for the proliferation of US military bases throughout Europe.

I suspect that the USA will remove a lot of the bases you are referring to. They are in $36trillion of debt and can no longer to fund Europe's defence (including Ukraine). Trump is forcing the Europeans to up their defence budgets and look after themselves.

I'm British by the way, seeing lots of xenophobic American haters piling in on this thread.

They need a lot of those bases though.
They give them access for shorter range missiles to attack in the face of aggression. Which includes against them

Zebedee999 · 04/03/2025 15:34

Petuniaspetal · 04/03/2025 14:56

Try a little fact finding. You can't seriously believe the USA is the only contributer to global defence.

The fundamental reason that there is a combined effort to maintain world peace is to ensure there is shared intelligence and defence if required should a dictator like Putin/KimJung Un/ Xi Jingpin attack militarily or engage in nuclear warfare.

Eg 9/11 is a case in point ...Europe stepped up when it was America that were the primary target. This is still a recent memory for most but it seems to have been conveniently forgotten, as in the case of the vice president Vance. Despite his Yale education, and apparently serving in the Marine Corps.

At no point did I say that the USA is the only contributer to global defence; you are making things up to fit some agenda.
I merely pointed out that the USA is in $36trillion of debt, whilst European countries don't even pay the agreed amount for NATO membership.
Time for the Europeans to step up instead of relying on US tax payers. 300million people subsidising the 600million Europeans. It seems fair to me but people don't like it.
What is so triggering for you about my suggestion that Europeans should pay for their own defense? I'm British btw so this applies to me too.

Longwaysouth · 04/03/2025 15:35

Don Trumpioni
I see that he plans to defund any school, college, or University that allows 'illegal' protest.

Who decides what is 'illegal' protest?
One assumes it is anyone who disagrees with the administration.
So much for free speech in Land of the Free!

I think they are going isolationist. "America first" was what Trump was elected upon. Sick of US money being spent overseas maybe?
