AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

America refused to help in WWll until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour - that brought them into the war. Having said that without them we’d have lost the war and be speaking German now.
We paid America back for their support for years and our last payment was under the Blair/Brown government.

Tbf. We needed Russia too. We couldn’t have won it without both.
plus Germany and Italy declared war on the US. The US initially wasn’t joining the War against them, just Japan. They really didn’t join by choice and good will

Maybe if the US economy tanks and people's standard/costs of living hugely deteriorate, then the worms may turn.

The person in the street is not all that involved in wars and espionage and Project 25 and NATO etc. But they are very cognisant of the cost of living. They were promised more money in their pockets if Trump won.

If that doesn't happen very soon (and many Americans don't get the potential impact of tariffs on their pockets yet), well that may turn things around. Protests etc. Bad publicity. Bad vibes. I don't know, just thinking out loud.

It's the economy Stupid.

Yes I think this is an insightful comment and key to this. Aside from the MAGA loons the voters who helped nudge Trump to his not altogether sweeping victory were moderate Republicans who held their noses, concerned primarily with inflation. I wonder what they are thinking now?

What's that got to do with me? I'm British. Lots of xenophobic American haters are piling on to me because they think I'm American.

Stating facts is neither xenophobic nor hateful. If you make obviously false or misleading statements then prepare to be called out on it, this is Mumsnet, not Fox News.

I suspect that the USA will remove a lot of the bases you are referring to. They are in $36trillion of debt and can no longer to fund Europe's defence (including Ukraine). Trump is forcing the Europeans to up their defence budgets and look after themselves.

I'm British by the way, seeing lots of xenophobic American haters piling in on this thread.

Maybe America aren't really going out on a limb to be THANKFUL for everything that Europe and the UK did to support them during 9/11. He hasn't even got an excuse he was in the Marine Corps and went to Yale.

Oh so now we are paying debts back and moaning about it but everyone is fine with giving billions to Ukraine because it's for the 'safety of the world'. You all need to make up your minds where you stand on giving away money because all I see is double standards.

You were the one who started with the “owing” rhetoric.

You seem to be unaware of the actual reasons for the US maintaining military bases in Europe, it is for their benefit, not ours, saying they will close them down is pure hyperbole on Trump’s behalf.
The US government under Trump is showing itself to be a risk to the world, people being concerned and angry about that is neither xenophobic nor hateful.

Don't be surprised if you get some push back if you are defending Americas position.

While you say that America is in so much debt why oh why are they literally throwing not only multiple billions of dollars at musk, but aside from that ALL of their eggs in one basket? No business man worth their salt would invest in one man for all of their outlying business enterprises, because if one goes down they all do. If anyone should know about failing businesses it is trump.

If you are in so much debt as a country why invest billions of billions of dollars in going to MARS how about protecting their own people.

Its like spending 60 or 70 k on a flashy car when your house is over run with dry rot.

I think they are going isolationist. "America first" was what Trump was elected upon. Sick of US money being spent overseas maybe?

That's going well, the only Americans profiting from their policies are the Trump family (200 million and rising) Musk and the billionaires.

I really doubt he is a Russian asset. He is just doing exactly what he said he would do in recent speeches - putting the USA first (and not giving a damn about anyone else in the process).

He sees an opportunity for the USA to make a lot of money by getting mineral rights in Ukraine for no cost. He is quite prepaerd to bully Ukraine into accepting whatever deal is agreed and to cosy up to Putin at the same time to achieve it. He doesn't give a damn about Ukraine, only the money which is to be made by mining their land and he has seized an opportunity to get it.

Oh he's a Russian stooge, why else do this?

Next up he'll cancel Russian sanctions so the oligarchs can get back to spanking some cash on his golf courses.

He was talking about introducing a Gold 'green card' , where people with a significant amount of cash can get a fast track to citizenship ? A sort of Oligarchs are us, option.

In regards to “golden green card”. America is a bit late to the party. Many many EU countries do it:

Because they have chosen to side with Russia at the expense of Ukraine.

They are probably also trying to weaken the Russian relationship with China.

But that is a non-story anyway. "Stopped offensive cyber operations" - was the US actively hacking Russian infrastructure?

It's time for the wool to fall from the world's eyes. The Trump administration have, so far, been gaslighting the world that their priority is peace (really!); they just want to enable negotiations; they are neutral arbiters, etc, etc, etc.

No more bullshit. Europe and Canada has understandably been in a state of disbelief, but we can't pretend anymore. How much more evidence do we need -

  1. US administration have never once acknowledged that Russia started the war by invading a sovereign territory.

  2. They publicly called Zelenskyy a dictator.

  3. No criticism of Putin - WTF!

  4. They went over the head of Ukraine and European allies in that first meeting between US and Russia in Saudi. We should have seen it for what it was then.

  5. Repeatedly inflating (more than doubling) the amount of aid they claim US has given Ukraine - despite all evidence to the contrary.

  6. The Oval office debacle.

  7. Voting last week with Russia, N. Korea, Belarus etc - not even abstaining.

  8. Trump's statement that "the EU was only formed to destroy America."

  9. Trump's cynical treatment of war-ravaged Ukraine as a minerals extortion opportunity

  10. Now the 'pause' on aid to Ukraine

  11. Clear adoption of Russia war rhetoric and language throughout the so-called 'diplomacy.'

  12. No mention of a single concession Russia will be expected to make in this 'peace deal' - while the assumption that Ukraine will be unable to reclaim its former territory is apparently baked-in to 'negotiations' at the outset.

  13. Gaslighting about the minerals grab being the equivalent of a security guarantee.

  14. Musk posting on X that it's time for US to leave NATO and UN.

  15. Vance's speech in Munich that the 'real threat' to Europe is not actually Russia (!!!) - oh no, it's the 'threat from within.' Said shamelessly, in front of Ukrainian generals at the conference, while their men and families are being killed - now.

  16. Vance's decision to only meet with the AFD after the Munich conference, not the actual Chancellor or any other party.

  17. Musk beamed onto the big screen with a rousing speech to rally the AFD Nazis in the days leading up to the German election.

HOW MUCH MORE EVIDENCE DO WE NEED?

This Trump administration is not 'determined to bring peace.' They are Russian puppets spouting Kremlin rhetoric. With Nazi-sympathisers and Christian anti-abortion zealots sprinkled among them.

The appearance of sycophancy and 'toeing the line' that now characterises US cabinet meetings or press conference rhetoric resembles something from.... The Kremlin or North Korea. It's all too weird.

They talk about 'free speech.' They mean they want the freedom to pedal hate speech - a weird hash of Kremlin / Nazi / anti-Islamic rhetoric; with some anti-abortion, ominous 'Christian' weirdness thrown into the mix.

This administration is the worst of humanity. Make no mistake. I hope America wakes up before it's too late.

Trump is deliberately weakening US security and strengthening Putin's hand. With this, with his block on equipment to Ukraine, with his mass firing of people looking after America's nuclear arsenal etc.

It may make you feel better to dismiss this as a non story, but the reality is he's wrecking the USA.

The baffler is why the American electorate didn’t see it.

I agree with all of this.

My question is, to what end? Many suggest Trump wants to move Russia away from China, as China is his big adversary. But why would Russia do that? Even if Russia became an economic ally and partner to the US why would Putin drop China?

It doesn't seem to make sense. It must be more simple - simply that Trump wants to make money for himself only through taking Ukraine and its minerals and has engineered Putin as a partner to enable this and they share the proceeds, and he hasn't properly thought through the consequences of emboldening Russia / doesn't give a shit if Moldova, Lithuania, Finland get invaded next or if London gets nuked - in fact that suits him as the EU is a rival trading block. He also hasn't appreciated fully the likelihood that China then invades Taiwan, the producer of 80% of the world's chips, and the impact on the US economy.

Can he really not have thought that far ahead?

I'm in a left-wing political group on Facebook. Just recently, it's gone crazy with pro-Russian propaganda.

The pro-Russian side has various arguments, but one thing stands out - they blame America. Everything that's happened is because of US manipulation. America engineered a coup against Yanukovych, encouraged Ukraine and other countries to join NATO etc. I suspect there's an element of truth to this, although it's only part of the story. America will have been trying to influence Russia's neighbours. That makes it even more bizarre how Trump is positioning America as the unappreciated saviours, and Ukraine as the villains.

It also makes me wonder how Russia really feels about Trump's poodle behaviour. Trump won't criticise Putin, he's all for giving him what he wants. He shamelessly set up a weaker country struggling bravely for its survival, so he can claim mineral wealth and pretend to be a peacemaker. How does that play with Russia's obvious feelings of enmity and resentment towards America?

I genuinely think he's a Russian asset, I think it's worrying that we share so much intelligence with the U.S. We are on the brink of the possibility of a very different world in future, militarily, financially and morally. I just hope Europe pulls together and stays strong.

We are part of Five Eyes (UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) - the US saying intelligence from them is a privilege is pretty thick.
Infuriated by Trump calling the PM of Canada the governor, too. Perhaps it's time to burn the rebel's Capitol again?
This is the price we are all paying for the Democrats not removing Biden from the running earlier and also for not ditching the stupidity of gender ideology.
