The tide is turning on Trump

  1. CNN now, poll shows majority of Americans disapprove of Trump.
  1. Commentator stated that Trump spoke about his several conversations with Putin and alarm bells ring, because Trump is parroting what Putin says. No independent thoughts?
  1. He comes over as having memory problems. He forgets what he said earlier.
  1. He needs help running press conferences and appears unable to manage without support.

Is he ill?

It's very odd.

I wish this was true but it really really isn’t. It’s just wishful thinking.

Would take with a pinch of salt what CNN say. Biased reporting, anti trump. Think he has a few more faculties than the last president, which, unfortunately for them is not there any more.

Again, this isn't about their news programming, it's about their polling.

All of the major news networks, regardless of their bias, strive for accurate polling (otherwise it undermines their credibility).

CNN's polling has, historically, been among the more accurate and best in the US (ranked #14 of 282 by Fivethirtyeight).

If enough people feel brave about enacting it, I’m sure there will be something in the Constitution or some Amendment that would apply to do with lacking mental capacity or not being a treasonous bastard.

Doubt it’ll happen any time soon even though his Nazi officers are getting busy dismantling the organs of the state. They’ll probably suffer a major cyber / terrorist attack before that happens.

Quite a few. Made by Colt, Smith and Wesson etc......

You’re right, that’s the more likely scenario judging by US history!

Sadly the last president was even more cognitively impaired which allowed Trump back in.

This.

ExtraOnions · 03/03/2025 20:20

A few measles epidemics, a crash in the economy (mostly caused by Musk), lack of imports / exports causing shortages, destruction of any access to decent medical care etc etc … I spy a Civil War

Does it matter what the electorate thinks of a dictator?

Let's ask the Russians.

I'd agree with this completely.

But - Russians do support Putin.

Nope death, impeachment or resignation. I wouldn’t necessarily believe cnn polling it’s pretty biased. I did before the election and honestly thought we’d be living in a world with Kamala Harris as president.

If any of those things happened would they hold an election or would the
party pass the presidency to Vance? I don’t think he’d be much better tbh!!

28Fluctuations · 03/03/2025 20:29

Why do people keep treating the US like its just going through a bad patch and everything will go back to normal after 4 years? This is the America the voters wanted. It's his 2nd term...it was dead clear what they were voting for.

He has immunity from prosecution. He has the courts in his pocket. Republicans have fallen into line behind him. Voting rights are being restricted and constrained. The Constitution means nothing to him.

The USA as a democracy is over. We should all catch up with that reality.

His popularity - or lack of it - is meaningless. No one is shifting him.

If the indoctrination is bad enough then that would explain it. I find it hard to fathom how anyone could favour him but I haven't been brought up in Russia.

I need to go do more research into the regime but am slightly scared to. I can guess that openly opposing or speaking out could result in severe repercussions. I can't believe there's a fair voting system in Russia that Putin hasn't rigged.

Do they? I mean I probably would if I lived in Russia due to my deep dislike of falling out of windows or being hauled off for interrogation or imprisoned.

People don’t seem to realise that being able to openly criticise those in power is a real luxury that most of the world doesn’t have.

This exactly. That's the thing about living in a brutal dictatorship - it's hard to know what people really think.

Normalcy bias.

People refused to believe that Trump would align with Russia over NATO, despite all evidence to the contrary, until it started playing out.

People will continue to believe that the US will have a free and fair election in 2028, and the results of it respected, until it doesn't happen.

Dymaxion · 03/03/2025 20:48

I have a relative who lives in the States who is very much a MAGA man. It's interesting listening to his viewpoint, I don't agree with him, but then I don't live over there so have no experience of what living in his area of America is like. He is still very much on the side of Trump, for now at least.
It's early days though isn't it, if the ordinary working person doesn't actually start to feel any fiscal benefit, then Trump could well be in trouble, regardless of the rhetoric.

It's a combination of the amount of money in their politics (making politicians more willing to lie), the bias of their news networks (particularly Fox, of the major ones) and the advent of social media. Americans exist in a sea of disinformation, most of it coming from the right (because that's where the mega rich tend to be).

He has also stopped Whitehouse briefings with all journalists and will now only allow approved journalists in. I keep waiting for someone to say 'actually, no you are destroying the Constitution' which I thought was sacrosanct to Americans, but no. Last time it seemed at least some people innthe Republican Party and some judges had a backbone but not now.

Echobelly · 03/03/2025 21:01

I honestly find it impossible to predict what will happen here.

We've never had such an experiment in fascism (let's not beat about the bush) in such a massive, wealthy, historically democratic country. In a world with social media and a tame technocracy on which the whole world is now incredibly reliant, all literally backed by the world's richest man.

But also in a country full of entitled people with guns.

So many things could happen:

  • Trump doesn't allow for an election next time around
  • Trump dies or is assassinated before the end of his term
  • The outright Christofascists get in and turn America into Gilead
  • He pisses off enough veterans or military that they actually rise against the government... and a zillion other things....

One thing I do know - whatever happens, this is going to be a disaster that it will take America decades to recover from. There is literally no good outcome I can imagine for this. 99% of Americans will get much poorer, Musk's 'savings' will cost infinitely more than they save through the consequences of losing so much federal infrastructure (for example, next time there's a natural disaster, which is getting much more common, it'll take far longer and therefore cost far more to restore things back to functioning). The tax cuts that go to the super-rich will be money lost to the American economy forever.

Still has his hard-core support but they'd love him.no matter what

This. They will die for that fucking Cheeto. If you’re on his mailing list, his team send you multiple emails daily (in the guise of being directly from Trump himself) asking for money and telling you that you’re one of his top 1% of contributors, and can he continue to count on you?

Well the GOP did nothing to stop a felon becoming their leader and now apparently they're all scared of what will happen in they don't toe the line because, they and their families and literally being threatened physically. Guess what? When you are led by a criminal he will rule you by fear. It's all very 'Death of Stalin' - no GOP politician would even dare suggest something anti-Trump to another just in case you pick the wrong person.

I agree.

It was absolutely clear what the electorate was voting for with Trump and his supporters are very loyal.

Britain and the EU need to adapt to now leading on dealing with the threat from Russia.

He always wins 99% of the vote fair and square. 😉

I’m not sure. Getting rid of frontline delivery civil servants would be noticed quickly but it may take a longer time for the loss of staff working on federal strategic policy to have an impact.

It will be interesting to see.
