Middle-aged professional women doing drugs on the weekend

Is this common now? I was invited to a house party Saturday night and snow was being done quite openly, there were also Mary Jane vapes and Ecstasy passed around.

These were mainly mothers with adult grown sensible families. What is going on, am I totally not with it?

Was it always this way or is this scene infiltrating a different demographic now?

We always knew people like this did this, but was it this open and accepted?

I didn’t partake, still a great night.

I don't think it's illegal if it's just spores.

I'd much rather talk about the pedestrianisation of Norwich town centre.

I feel your pain. I am still fraught at the Banger Stop moving from outside Monsoon to a stand on the market if I'm honest.

Different people too it seems, but great service and still a decent dog.

I mean, this depends on what ‘shrooms we’re talking about here. Lions mane or psilocybin, because one is very much illegal regardless of quantity.

sparrowflewdown · 03/03/2025 00:24

I don't know! I don't grow them lol :) Just heard it was quite popular on Mumsnet.

JHound · 03/03/2025 00:37

Depends on the circle.

Some of my middle-aged professional friends do A-Class drugs very regularly.

Some would never touch even a joint.

ComealongSpring · 03/03/2025 00:46

I actually think all drugs should be legal. They could be properly tested, smash the county lines gangs overall much safer. If people want to spend their money on time on them, not my business. Just like wine.

I would not look favourably on the source or quality control of the substances consumed though. Often these substances are not produced in the most scientific or hygienic facilities. Not to mention the transport and purchase.

@Janedoe82 no, I haven’t. But I believe this post is about people who take drugs recreationally and not addicts. Same as a post about drinking with friends isn’t about alcoholics. And people don’t respond as such.

Taken sensibly drugs are not worse than alcohol - and that has been proven time and time again. Indeed by the government’s own drugs Czar David Nutt.

I don’t care if people drink or don’t drink, take drugs or don’t take drugs. It just screams uneducated to cry about the difference when there isn’t one

Many of the recreational drugs are much more likely to lead to addiction than alcohol.

The immediate safety thing looks less true than it used to as well, the potential problems related to cannabis are becoming more apparent, and tainted drugs make coke and opiates a real roulette game - it's not as much a problem in the UK yet as North America but I expect it will be soon enough.

I think you pass it to the left, like port.

Drugs at home on a weekend with friends sounds pretty sad. Fine for a night out or festival but not at home.

Why?

I see it as no different to sharing a bottle of wine (or 2 with mates).

SnoopyPajamas · 03/03/2025 01:07

The war probably has them all a bit stressed

TempestTost · 03/03/2025 01:09

I don't think any of my friends are inclined this way, but I think there are circles who are. Some kinds of high achievers seem to spend a lot of time looking for changed consciousness.

3 in one sitting is rather excessive, I don’t believe the svelte figures would last that long caning it each weekend like that.

All these wonderful introspective thoughtful comments on the state of society and drugs..

And I'm just here stuck on the fact that OP thinks 3 glasses of wine is excessive and "caning it" 😭

No wonder you panicked and resorted to 70s slang when presented with a situation more mind-altering than two medium glasses of merlot in one sitting

It feels like pretending to be a teenager or young adult again. I’m really glad the days of doing drugs around a friends house are over. My friendship group did a lot of drugs, a friend of mine died from a drugs overdose and plenty of others wrecked their lives with psychosis from weed or becoming dealers. One friend chewed half of their tongue off on mushrooms. I’m more than happy with my glass or two of wine thanks.

Snookerfan · 03/03/2025 01:32

If I’ve managed to reach the age of 51 without becoming a junkie, it just might be possible that wasn’t by accident. My temptations are not quite as exciting. I have been exposed to drugs taking from teen onwards countless times, that wasn’t the surprising part, the surprised was WHO was doing it.

I don’t know anybody that did drugs as a teen Why is it “pretending to be a teen” to partake in drugs but not alcohol (or smoking for that matter).

Who put an age limit on things people find pleasurable?
This is like when people say people over 30 should not go to nightclubs!

I am sorry you have such terribke stories from
your friends drug use.

My experience us the exact opposite. All middle class, happy successful professionals. Who are also recreational drug users (in my drug taking circles of friends and acquaintances)

Were they Sex People Elaine?

That did make me chuckle (by the way it’s Lynne not Elaine - stop getting Partridge wrong 😂😉)

Snow & Mary Jane 😂Is this the 70/80’s

I’m a middle aged (I think?! Mid 40’s) mum and no I don’t see this at parties, just champagne and other booze…rather boringly…I did all of the above in the 90’s though and got it out of my system, couldn’t be arsed these days, barely drink

This is very interesting.

My peer group has scaled way back on alcohol (who needs the calories, sugar and hangovers?!) but still dabbles in drugs.

We're in our 30s.

If you know what you're doing, the comedown can be managed and you feel right as rain the next day. It's also about 10x cheaper than getting drunk.

Janedoe82 · 02/03/2025 23:17

You clearly haven’t spent much time with drug addicts.

You clearly haven’t spent much time with people with alcohol problems.
It’s very normalised - jokes on social media, gifts that say Prosecco process etc. Any excuse and people drink, often to excess.

Ohapal · 02/03/2025 23:00

I don't think I would get about with those people anymore. I'd be pretty pissed off if someone offered me that shit. I'd think they never grew up and couldn't see past the end of their own noses. Bet they'd be really fucked off if their teens got sucked into county lines or whatever. But alright for them perpetuate the demand for it? Fuckwits.

Well said

Charlize43 · 03/03/2025 02:37

Obviously they haven't had their Thames Water bill yet if they are blowing money on drugs...

Notsosure1 · 03/03/2025 02:43

Bluh · 02/03/2025 23:16

I find it really interesting that alcohol is practically a national pastime. Yet drugs taken recreationally, which time and time again have been proven to be not as harmful, are vilified. It’s a bizarre and uneducated position to take

Edited

I guess it depends what you mean by harmful and also the industries behind them. The supply of Bordeaux is probably slightly different to that of crack cocaine.

Leeto888 · 03/03/2025 03:12

I can’t stand middle-class people who do drugs. Imagine thinking you’re fucking cool doing a line at a dinner party with your kids tucked up safely in bed, not caring about the kids caught up in county lines. The fact is the gangs controlling drugs in the UK are fucking horrendous and think nothing of shooting people who get in their way, cuckooing vulnerable adults in their homes and making kids ride up and down the country on trains when they should be at home with their parents. If you are buying drugs you are contributing to this violence and exploitation. You’re not cool, you’re a twat.

I’m actually more surprised at the amount of people who don’t seem to believe or understand this post, and are making fun of the OP, when actually, they’re the ones who seem to be living in the past. To be clear, OP isn’t from the 70’s - ‘Mary Jane Vapes’ is a brand name for a very expensive UK atomiser for cannabis.

And for those who don’t seem to know - yes, there has actually been a huge uptake of drugs in the middle classes. Mushrooms especially are now the ‘yummy mummy’ drug of choice, presumably aligning with the rise in ‘micro-dosing’. Yes, rather than a few bottles of wine, you’ll find a lot of the middle class/upper class mums are doing shrooms and cannabis as standard at their get togethers.

Yes to this. It's a purposely nudge nudge wink wink brand name.

Leeto888 · 03/03/2025 03:19

A ‘yummy mummy’ who does drugs is my idea of hell. Fuck those people.
