Middle-aged professional women doing drugs on the weekend

Is this common now? I was invited to a house party Saturday night and snow was being done quite openly, there were also Mary Jane vapes and Ecstasy passed around.

These were mainly mothers with adult grown sensible families. What is going on, am I totally not with it?

Was it always this way or is this scene infiltrating a different demographic now?

We always knew people like this did this, but was it this open and accepted?

I didn’t partake, still a great night.

I’m actually more surprised at the amount of people who don’t seem to believe or understand this post, and are making fun of the OP, when actually, they’re the ones who seem to be living in the past. To be clear, OP isn’t from the 70’s - ‘Mary Jane Vapes’ is a brand name for a very expensive UK atomiser for cannabis.

And for those who don’t seem to know - yes, there has actually been a huge uptake of drugs in the middle classes. Mushrooms especially are now the ‘yummy mummy’ drug of choice, presumably aligning with the rise in ‘micro-dosing’. Yes, rather than a few bottles of wine, you’ll find a lot of the middle class/upper class mums are doing shrooms and cannabis as standard at their get togethers.

Oh yes and the ‘shrooms, forgot about that - plenty of middle class mums doing that round here (different group to the coke heads I mentioned upthread)

Loafs will. Loads wont

thats the thing, you just never know whos truly who

And hard yes. Legalisation of drugs would stop all these issues and we should all be asking for it like this

It really wouldn’t. I work in Belfast. Drugs are controlled by paramilitaries. If you think they will just go away you are delusional.
It is all very well having lefty ideals but believe me until yoh have spent time with deprived communities with decades of trauma you have no idea how horrendous drugs actually are. They mess with peoples brains leading to suicides and even more lives destroyed. Get into the real world.

Franjipanl8r · 02/03/2025 23:36

Drugs at home on a weekend with friends sounds pretty sad. Fine for a night out or festival but not at home.

JoyousGreyOrca · 02/03/2025 23:38

I do not know anyone who does this. But I would not hang out with anyone who does drugs. And no I did not get it out of my system in my youth, I did not do it then either.

Wishitwasstraightforward · 02/03/2025 23:39

I've seen this at several house parties over the last few years. It's been more of a case of a handful of people heading into a room and having a line each than openly doing it in the main areas. I've come across it twice when looking for the host so I could thank them before heading off, and once when retrieving my coat as I was cold at a bbq.

It's not something I'd want to get involved in, and I don't drink but I've no issue with either as long as the participants are driving or responsible for kids.

I would say that I've been around a lot more worryingly out of control people or nasty behaviour caused by alcohol than drugs.

I 100% second this.

I think this situation is pretty common among high earners in big cities, anyone who partied in their younger days etc. Did no one see how they found traces of coke in every bathroom in parliament or something?

I think there are plenty of circles where no one would blink an eye at sensible (in a social setting and occasional) drug use. Equally, judging by the reaction on MN whenever this comes up, there are plenty of drug free circles and there doesn’t seem to be much overlap.

JoyousGreyOrca · 02/03/2025 23:42

@Marmiteontoastgirlie I totally agree you are either in a druggy circle or drug free circle. One of my friends started dating a new partner who did not believe at first that my friend had never tried any drug. Everyone she knew takes drugs, whereas in my circle practically no one does.

There is no such thing as ‘sensible’ drug use. I know dealers- they cut it with all kids of shit and don’t care!!! Laundry detergents, talc, fentanyl even.
even cannabis is now mixed with synthetic agents to make it stronger.

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/03/2025 23:44

I know people like this. Not close friends but like to boast about drug taking and their hot tub (sex pond). They think they are very cool and clever. Love talking about how wasted they were. The rest of us find it a bit sad and depressing.

Maitri108 · 02/03/2025 23:45

PrimitivePerson · 02/03/2025 23:30

No thank you, I'm not going to join in your sex festival!

I'd much rather talk about the pedestrianisation of Norwich town centre.

NewMarmiteJar · 02/03/2025 23:46

An ex's social circle was like this. I knew them for the best part of 20 years and I suspect it's the same as it ever was.

I found them snobby bores mainly, all shagged each other, bit bitchy, inherited wealth. Not for me.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 02/03/2025 23:47

PonyPatter44 · 02/03/2025 22:42

Sounds like a load of performative wank. Middle aged, middle class druggies are deeply tedious. You probably need some new friends.

This

Not the kind of company I would want to keep. I don’t even drink alcohol

Jibberjabba · 02/03/2025 23:49

Truly pathetic bunch of morons. It’s time as a society we wake up to the devastation it is causing and the barbaric criminals supplying drugs.

CalleOcho · 02/03/2025 23:52

I know middle aged lecturers, teachers, healthcare workers, so many professional people that do coke.

It’s rife.

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/03/2025 23:54

Thank you for the thread @Snookerfan. It's reminded me to take my HRT.Blush

Mrsbloggz · 02/03/2025 23:58

I'm glad I'm too old for all that now!

BillyILash · 03/03/2025 00:01

Most people I know like this just never grew out of doing it, maybe slowed down at peak child years but never really stoped, and or just still think they are still young and trying to continue their “best years”

I have a fairly new group of friends, a couple of years now. Met through DCs schools and activities, group ranges from early 40s to late 50s. They are doing this shit all the time. Half the group privately educated all in professional jobs, one a GP. They openly talk with their adult children about it, even laughing and exchanging drug stories. Quite often we get a display of what it was like raving in the 90s. That’s usually my very uptight light weight cue to leave.

Snookerfan · 03/03/2025 00:07

We did have one politician there, and a magistrate. Politician was into the vape, magistrate happily expertly hoovering a line. Most funny of all, my friend’s kid’s geography teacher was there. Bizarrely, I was more shocked by the school teacher than anyone else.
Not much hard drinking at all come to think of it. Pretty decorous in a casual sort of way, all things considered.

Microdosing is a different thing though isn't it? They are doing this privately for mental health purposes.

I mean, it’s a class A drug, regardless of quantity or purpose.

Its not inconceivable for mum to micro dose on the weekdays to ‘ease the stress of parenthood’ and then maybe get the ‘shrooms out to share with friends on the weekends!
