Middle-aged professional women doing drugs on the weekend

Snookerfan · 02/03/2025 22:12

Is this common now? I was invited to a house party Saturday night and snow was being done quite openly, there were also Mary Jane vapes and Ecstasy passed around.

These were mainly mothers with adult grown sensible families. What is going on, am I totally not with it?

Was it always this way or is this scene infiltrating a different demographic now?

We always knew people like this did this, but was it this open and accepted?

I didn’t partake, still a great night.

I'm a middle aged woman, I spent the 90s raving, as did most of my peers. I wasn't a significant drug user, but a lot of my friends were, so no, I'm not surprised that with their kids grown and moved out, and some disposable income, they are playing again.

Incidentally, would you have been as scandalised if they were all getting drunk and smoking cigarettes/vaping? Because those are drugs too, just, legal.

Personally I don't even drink anymore, menopause has taken alcohol completely off the menu for me, and I'd rather be on the sofa in my PJs by 9, but each to their own.

I spent the 90's raving and I'm early 50's but I still like meeting up with friends for food and drinks. None of us touch drugs though. I'm on the sofa in my pj's now but we're still quite sociable some weekends.

Any middle class person snorting coke is at the top of a long and miserable chain of blood, violence, trafficking, crime, gangs, abuse of women, grooming of young kids. In short, an absolute cunt

KatyaKabanova · 02/03/2025 23:11

You smoke cheese ?! Wow.

Thank god you said smoke!!!
All I could think was who drinks cheese, although I have been partial to a glass or two 😂😂

lifeonmars100 · 04/03/2025 18:37

"snow" and "Mary Jane", I was a drugs worker for years and have never ever heard those words used in real life, thought they were American slang from decades ago. Different generations and different locations have their own language for substances but this all sounds very odd, were the people at the party actually using these words?

And here’s little old me worried about having a coffee after 4 pm 🤣🤣

I always worry about an espresso martini for that reason!

In the essay "Prof. Veblen" (1919) the intellectual H. L. Mencken addressed the matters of Americans' social psychology reported in The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899), by asking:

"Do I enjoy a decent bath because I know that John Smith cannot afford one—or because I delight in being clean? Do I admire Beethoven's Fifth Symphony because it is incomprehensible to Congressmen and Methodists—or because I genuinely love music? Do I prefer terrapin à la Maryland to fried liver, because plowhands must put up with the liver—or because the terrapin is intrinsically a more charming dose?"

(people arent taking drugs because they want to look cool, they are taking drugs because drugs are fun)

Interesting quote. Quite apt 👌

Muckybib · 04/03/2025 18:42

2 things, I think some people (though the ones who never had kids generally) never stopped doing it from the 90s and secondly I've noticed more people when they hit around 50 rediscovering raving, as there kids are now older and that included drugs, but it's not for me, but I have zero judgement about any of it :)

I agree. I did laugh at “snow”. Mary Jane is used by Gen Z ironically.

Anyway, they are tragic, clearly, and no, everyone isn’t having a ridiculous crisis like this. My DC are mid twenties. My friends are all quitting the Pinot Grigio and taking up Peleton and Mounjaro. 9:30 bedtime.

You need superior quality friends.

Your friends do not sound superior to me.

Horses for courses I guess.

If I’ve managed to reach the age of 51 without becoming a junkie, it just might be possible that wasn’t by accident. My temptations are not quite as exciting. I have been exposed to drugs taking from teen onwards countless times, that wasn’t the surprising part, the surprised was WHO was doing it.

They'll have been the same people doing it that were doing it in the 90s though, they've just got better jobs and more responsibilities and get tired more easily so can't do it as often now as they'd like to.

JournalistEmily · 04/03/2025 18:54

I don’t know anyone like this. I wish I did!!!

Bibbidybobbidyboop · 04/03/2025 18:55

Not unusual . I have came across this many times , people in very respectable jobs sniffing coke at a party. It opened my eyes - it’s very common .

Not for me , I never have and never will touch any kind of drug , but it doesn’t put me off people as long as no children are around. Admittedly though i find I distance myself from the type of events because it’s just not me and I find people on it very annoying

SirRaymondClench · 04/03/2025 18:55

Red0 · 02/03/2025 23:23

Actually knowing these people I think they would probably be quite embarrassed if they found out that people outside of their circle knew about this. Who wouldn’t be really? Trying to come across as all sensible, sometimes twee Mother Earth types, professionals, PTA parents - who wouldn’t be embarrassed? Otherwise they’d be more open about it surely? You’re not really going to come across as a great parent - I know I wouldn’t feel comfortable having my DC going to these particular parents houses. I doubt they’ll be snorting coke during a play date, but makes me question their parenting when they come home from a night out, send the babysitter home then sit round taking cocaine with their mates while their kids sleep upstairs. I’d say they probably would give a shit if they found out teachers and other parents knew they did that.

God you sound really unpleasant.

UtterJoke · 04/03/2025 18:57

Absolutely shocked and disgusted by many of the comments.

A 16-year-old child was just shot dead in London. County lines…

My DC don’t see their father anymore because he has become a coke addict. Every single one of his friends has done or still does drugs. Some just smoke pot, but the majority take cocaine. These aren’t just random people—they have families, children, businesses, and both professional and non-professional jobs.
Out of 20 close friends:

  1. 3 ended up divorced because their partners wouldn’t tolerate drugs.
  2. 1 became a dealer.
  3. 1 is dating a dealer.
  4. 1 died.
  5. 1 ended up in a mental health facility

That means out of 21 people, including my ex, 8 people’s lives were ruined because of drugs. Eight! It’s all fun and games until “casual use” turns into an addiction—because whether people want to believe it or not, anyone’s use can spiral into addiction. All those families are from middle class or upper middle class. All went to good schools and come from nice part of London. Now, I’m left dealing with the fallout of my ex’s choices. The worst part? If he had been honest about his drug use, I would have never dated him. But instead, he hid it for years. I was raised drug-free, and none of my friends took drugs, so I had no idea what the signs were. And then, beyond the personal damage, there’s the wider ethical issue—gangs, production, abuse, violence. Anyone who justifies drug use and dismisses it as “just a bit of fun” seriously needs to give their head a wobble. It's an epidemic.

* edited to add when I said 8 people I meant friendship group... majority has 2 children each and partners plus wider impact on extended family like their parents.... add those people up yourselves *

About 93% of the UK consumption of cocaine occurs within a 20 mile radius of Chipping Norton.

I know because I live there and I am very, very observant.

What a strange post. There are middle aged people who don't need mounjaro because they are slim, exercise anyway and still enjoy a glass of pinot. None of my close friends need mounjaro and most are fit.

I totally judge people who do it, by indulging in drugs they are actively contributing to crime and misery.

Sandflea9900 · 04/03/2025 19:02

I am a middle aged (49) professional. I don’t do drugs and I don’t know anyone else that does.

PickledKT · 04/03/2025 19:03

I have been around people who have done this in my adult life for about 15 years. I think it's all good as long as there no children around - I've never participated if people have told me their children are in bed - that's ridiculous - I once had a couple turn up to my house and say "I've left my 11 year old babysitting her 5 year old sister" and I told them to go home - I mean what were they thinking?

I think the most important thing is that you are around good people and there are no safe guarding issues in relation to children and pets for that matter - and also not doing it during the week!
if you have no kids - work hard / play hard

If you are not used being around this - it can be a shock though. My husband is 50 and I am 37 - we are having a dinner party this weekend and we have "snow" for pudding 🙌🤩

Sounds like a load of performative wank. Middle aged, middle class druggies are deeply tedious. You probably need some new friends.

Totally agree. Cringetastic.

I'm sure the after dinner conversation will be riveting. 🙄

Wordau · 04/03/2025 19:12

Not unusual among many of my friends in their 40s and 50s. Some of the most debauched parties I've been to have been in 40+ groups. More money around I suppose.

I also have friends who won't touch it. I'd say it's about 50/50 in my broad friendship group between those who do and don't.

SunflowerSeahorse · 04/03/2025 19:15

Both of my sons work in security to make extra money. They tell me that the majority of cocaine users who they catch are middle aged.

It's not known as Snow-on-the Wold for no reason.

Another good place locally is Snowshill Manor (it really has become a bit of a 'manor') and Snorting-in-the-Marsh.

Best of all Chipping 'Snoreton' is where it all goes on. Ex politicians, diplomats and captains of industry with CBEs, Orders etc, all taking coke most evenings and weekends. I see it all the time.

County Lines only came into being because 'new monied' people moved to the sticks and wanted drugs like Amazon delivers pens.
