Middle-aged professional women doing drugs on the weekend

Is this common now? I was invited to a house party Saturday night and snow was being done quite openly, there were also Mary Jane vapes and Ecstasy passed around.

These were mainly mothers with adult grown sensible families. What is going on, am I totally not with it?

Was it always this way or is this scene infiltrating a different demographic now?

We always knew people like this did this, but was it this open and accepted?

I didn’t partake, still a great night.

I disagree with that as a general statement. Some drugs are worse than others. Alcohol is a drug. And a very harmful drug at that.

I don't dispute that alcohol is harmful. I really agree actually. But you're missing key issues. 1. Alcohol and drugs are closely interlinked. 2. Drugs are - like it or not - illegal. While this remains, bad people are profiteering and users are complicit in enabling county gangs, environmental terrorism and murder. There's an ethical and moral argument, which there simply isn't with alcohol.

Personally I think that someone who grows a small amount of weed for personal recreational use is not morally insuperior to someone who gets pissed every weekend. And I think people who think otherwise are hypocrites. I’m not missing key points at all. Not once did I say I think it’s fine to take class A drugs in comparison to alcohol.

A private prescription for very specific medical uses, that's very rarely granted. That's hardly the same. It's not like you could go to a GP and get it because you wanted to get high, is it? You'd need a specialist consultant who'd provided cannabis oil.

You are completely wrong.
Private prescriptions are very easy to obtain, eg https://releaf.co.uk/

If I’ve managed to reach the age of 51 without becoming a junkie, it just might be possible that wasn’t by accident. My temptations are not quite as exciting. I have been exposed to drugs taking from teen onwards countless times, that wasn’t the surprising part, the surprised was WHO was doing it.

The surprising part is that you find it suprising. I do hope you made your excuses and left.

I stand corrected. I'm uncomfortable with it. I don't care about cannabis personally, but do think it indicates a huge move towards a two tier health system. So it's legalised for the very rich?

I agree with you 100%, TheiceBear, nothing wrong with growing a little bit and someone who does that is far from inferior to anyone else, never mind drunks who can be far more objectionable than weed smokers.

Thank you🙏😊
The prices are comparable to those on the black market, so I wouldn't say it's legalised for the very rich, more like the black market and the medical market are in competition with each other.
(And lets not forget it's easy to grow your own for free)

I think you should choose some different friends.

Sounds good. Post the address before you go to the next one?

Unfortunately we live in a society of increasingly stupid people who don't care if their kids end up orphaned because they're dead from an OD in hospital.

Natural selection.

The issue I suggest is a bit like Child Pornography and the devastation that the supply chain causes

You mean Child Sexual Abuse material. They are images of a crime in action not pornography. That term is deeply offensive to survivors. https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/news/why-language-matters/child-sexual-abuse-material

But on your point I agree. The devastation caused by the cocaine supply chain, from children and adults having limbs blown off in the mined coca fields to children groomed into county lines operations and so much more along the way.

That intelligent, middle class adults are doing coke at parties in their 40s/50s while no doubt monologuing about all the charity work they do as if there’s no consequences to their fun is sickening.

Why language matters: why we should never use ‘child pornography’ and always say child sexual abuse material | NSPCC Learning

This blog post looks at the significant impact of using the term 'child sexual abuse material' instead of ‘child pornography’ which diminishes the seriousness of the crime. It is aimed at anyone working in the wider child protection sphere (in any capa...

I'm a middle aged woman and the only drug I take is the occasional ibuprofen. And vitamin D and C. Does that count? My current drug of choice is yoghurt with honey and walnuts.

Scarfitwere · 04/03/2025 18:01

I've been around people (acquaintances) who were seemingly 'respectable', 'middle class' people with professional jobs (headteachers/ solicitors etc) and they were all snorting coke and taking e's. They're all parents though kids weren't there. I was a bit surprised and I didn't think I was naive.

I did it all when I was late teens/ early twenties but would never touch it now. I wouldn't want to but even I if I did I could lose my career.

It's this educated professional crowd that do it most in my experience!

Tonkie18 · 04/03/2025 18:04

ew.

Cant bear drugs. But I’ve never been cool. Grew up with an alcoholic and a stoner. My sister does everything up to horse tranquilisers. She’s currently parading on the internet half-naked and gurning. It’s not a good look and not an avenue I’ll ever want to pursue.

say no to drugs kids (ladies).

berightorbehappy · 04/03/2025 18:09

That was me and my friends when l was 30’s / 40’s . Then l got into recovery and got sober and the thought of it now disgusts me ! ( yes l am like a reformed smoker ! ) what l never bothered to think about was the link between us and young boys being seduced into a dangerous life life of crime to supply many so called “respectable” people with a few lines at a party etc . It’s illegal at the end of the day and the normalisation of casual drug taking is ( as l was ) hypocritical when l looking down on people involved in the daily stabbings and issues in gangs in the UK thinking it had nothing to do with me. Just my opinion and not personal to anyone here who partakes , but yes OP you are not unreasonable to think it’s not ok.

I think in certain circles it’s always been like this. You need some different friends!

Exactly what I was thinking 🤣 don’t know about the ecstasy though, don’t think I could handle an ecstasy hangover in my 40’s 🤣

I'm a middle aged woman, I spent the 90s raving, as did most of my peers. I wasn't a significant drug user, but a lot of my friends were, so no, I'm not surprised that with their kids grown and moved out, and some disposable income, they are playing again.

Incidentally, would you have been as scandalised if they were all getting drunk and smoking cigarettes/vaping? Because those are drugs too, just, legal.

Personally I don't even drink anymore, menopause has taken alcohol completely off the menu for me, and I'd rather be on the sofa in my PJs by 9, but each to their own.

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 04/03/2025 18:11

Yeah, I know a few people like this. I've never been into drugs and can't stand being around cokeheads.

I wouldn't bother staying at a party like this. Just not my scene.

I find it really interesting that alcohol is practically a national pastime. Yet drugs taken recreationally, which time and time again have been proven to be not as harmful, are vilified. It’s a bizarre and uneducated position to take

Edited

Something to do with the supply chain perhaps?

TieYourTrampolineDownSport · 04/03/2025 18:16

lol do you really think your generation invented coke and ecstasy ? I’m in my 50s and couldn’t cope with the the lack of sleep but good for them back in the 90s - 00s Id have been gurning with the best of them!

Ineke · 04/03/2025 18:17

Sorry, but three glasses of wine on a night out with food seems very circumspect to me. My circle of friends could easily drink a bottle each, and not seem very inebriated either.

Catsandcannedbeans · 04/03/2025 18:23

Many years ago when I was about 19, I babysat for a very nice, very posh couple. Well, at the time I thought they were extremely posh, because I had never seen a fridge with an ice dispenser, they were probably middle class looking back. Anyway, they used to go out and do MDMA when I was watching their kids. They also asked me if I could get them weed brownies, which I may or may not have done for a large, inflated fee.

Aside from getting their teenage babysitter to get them edibles, they were and still are a lovely couple. No MDMA or weed brownies now since they are in their 70s. I was absolutely scandalised that posh people did drugs, let alone posh grown ups! I assumed drugs were just for scamps and teenagers like me!
