Middle-aged professional women doing drugs on the weekend

Snookerfan · 02/03/2025 22:12

Is this common now? I was invited to a house party Saturday night and snow was being done quite openly, there were also Mary Jane vapes and Ecstasy passed around.

These were mainly mothers with adult grown sensible families. What is going on, am I totally not with it?

Was it always this way or is this scene infiltrating a different demographic now?

We always knew people like this did this, but was it this open and accepted?

I didn’t partake, still a great night.

Your anecdotal experience of teenage drug dealers is not everyone’s experience of kids doing country lines. Accusing people of infantilising them whilst demonising them to justify your shitty decisions is hypercritical beyond belief.

Shitty decisions? I have no regrets around being a young mum. I've never harmed or bothered anyone unlike these "kids". 95% of them are little shits who know exactly what they're doing and would beat you up for looking at them. "Anecdotal experience" lol your comments read like someone with no actual experience outside of watching sad documentaries.

Respectfully let the middle aged professional woman enjoy their coke

I also know these 'kids' extremely well and haven't met one yet who hasn't had a childhood full or trauma and neglect. It isn't the children of middle class engaged parents who are out on the streets selling coke believe me.

KatyaKabanova · 03/03/2025 11:21

You misunderstand. People claim that cannabis is "harmless" in comparison to alcohol consumption. (qv)
Neither substance is harmless, however, those who compare taking cannabis to having one drink and suggesting that the former is less harmful than the latter, are ill informed.

but is taking 1 drag of 1 spliff less harmful than 1 glass of wine. A lot of people don’t sit and smoke a whole spliff at once, and spliffs come in various sizes. So I still don’t know what you mean. And in what way do you mean harmful?

These are the same kids who used to beat the crap out of other kids for looking at them and have hospitalised elderly people in my town.
I'll save my sympathy for someone who deserves it. Like I said I became a mum at 15 so I'm allowed to say who gives a shit they're 'young" unless super young (under 11) of course.

That's a lot of questions 🤣!
I've got my information from training I did and from government websites.
Would you like some links?
I'm just challenging the regular cool dude 😎 "Mary Jane is harmless" claim.

There's quite a lot of ignorance and misinformation on here. I think there's a lot of reading available, but this is a very interesting article.

If you think I have no experience of this then you are wrong. You have stomped onto this thread aggressively assuming you are the only person on mumsnet with any real life experience. You are wrong. If you are happy with your life and the way you have decided to learn it crack on. Nobody is stopping you. However if yoh think you can make people stop voicing their own opinions by shouting them down and being aggressive, think again. That may work with some people. It doesn’t work with me.

Hairoit · 03/03/2025 11:59

No not in my circle. A couple of friends do take drugs occasionally- they talk about it in our friend group in anecdotes about wild nights out but most of us are middle aged, tired, have small kids and our nights out end by 11pm most of the time!

DH recently went away on a lads weekend and was absolutely horrified by the amount of coke his friends were taking. Friends he’s known for years starting to take drugs in their 40s to be ‘cool’?! Pathetic.

And here’s little old me worried about having a coffee after 4 pm 🤣🤣

I treated myself to a raspberry flavoured coconut yoghurt on Saturday night....good times! :)

i don’t think you get my point at all. You could argue than a spliff is less harmful than drinking a bottle of wine. I certainly would argue that it is. It is legal in plenty of countries now. The amount of harm caused by alcohol is terrible, yet it is more socially acceptable because it is legal.

laddersandsnakes12 · 03/03/2025 12:09

I only know one person that takes cocaine regularly, or at least that's the only one that I'm aware of. Sure there are more that are keeping it quiet! Drugs aren't for me, I've never taken them and can't imagine a scenario where I really fancy doing a line on a Saturday night. Quite happy with a couple of glasses of wine or cocktails. If the drugs trade was as regulated and above board as manufacturing and selling wine was, then I'd have no issue with people using them, in their own time and not around kids. But it's shocking how much violence surrounds the manufacture and exportation of drugs. County lines has been covered in this thread, but there's also the incredibly violent cartels of countries like Mexico and Columbia. Many, many innocent people are murdered/disappeared/tortured by the cartels who make the majority of their money from the demand there is for drugs in countries like the UK and USA. I've lived in Mexico and have been in places where a day later a gang member was shot dead by a rival gang, as well as killed a couple of innocent bystanders in the wrong place at the wrong time. So no, I don't think taking drugs is harmless and while the kids getting involved in county lines is bad enough, it gets much much worse across the Atlantic. But I'm sure those middle class drug users make sure their Colombian coffee is fair trade 🙄.

Mindambling · 03/03/2025 12:22

I wish these people would consider the fact that our NHS doesn’t have the capacity to look after them if they should end up needing long term care as a result of their actions. They clearly haven’t got a clue about the increased likelihood of the consequences of their actions - possibly life changing, further to fall, taking other people with them.

KatyaKabanova · 03/03/2025 12:22

All excellent points, @laddersandsnakes12 . The reality is brutal.

you haven’t really convinced me of your argument with 1 bbc article about teenagers smoking cannabis. I don’t think anyone is trying to be “cool”. No drug is harmless yet less people seem bothered by the “wine o clock” narrative than other drugs.

I never claimed that 1 BBC article was the sum of the supporting evidence.

TheIceBear · 03/03/2025 12:28

@KatyaKabanova there are plenty of articles that cannabis is less harmful than alcohol when you google it. I don’t even use cannabis myself, I don’t like it. I do think alcohol is a lot more harmful in most ways though. That’s why I’m challenging your “a spliff is more harmful than a glass of wine” comment. It’s just vague.

I don't rely on googling articles.
I rely on the training I've received and the well researched and peer reviewed articles which I have read.

I live somewhere where cannabis is legal and lots of the mums I know do partake. I brought my friend fancy edibles the other day instead of a bottle of wine!

A bbc article ? Sorry but you sound ridiculous. There are plenty of academic articles about how harmful alcohol is in comparison to cannabis. You sound like you have no knowledge of cannabis at all actually.

You haven’t provided any evidence that 1 spliff is more harmful than 1 glass of wine. And elaborated on the type of harm you are referring to

Don't believe it. Fine. Do your own research.
