Middle-aged professional women doing drugs on the weekend

Is this common now? I was invited to a house party Saturday night and snow was being done quite openly, there were also Mary Jane vapes and Ecstasy passed around.

These were mainly mothers with adult grown sensible families. What is going on, am I totally not with it?

Was it always this way or is this scene infiltrating a different demographic now?

We always knew people like this did this, but was it this open and accepted?

I didn’t partake, still a great night.

I've had the same friends since early 20s, none of us take drugs. But in other social events its so common and openly discussed. It's shocked me. They're all a certain type of people imo, can spot them a mile off now.

Doingmybestbut · 03/03/2025 09:41

I don’t think you can be a good person and take drugs. It’s pretty much the least ethical thing you can buy. And yes, I do judge middle class professionals more harshly when their kids are more likely to be protected from being groomed into county lines gangs and less likely to be stabbed over turf wars, and they think it’s all a bit of fun and congratulate themselves on being unlike the other boring people their age. Good luck to them if one of their children ends up an addict.

Edited

The exception is mushrooms - it's legal to buy the grow kit and the spores (for "research purposes"), but illegal to grow them (yes make it make sense 🤐).

I have not grown them at home because I can get them legally where I live, but it's apparently very easy.

Youngatheart00 · 03/03/2025 09:55

I think it’s a sad indication of the times we live in, even those who are ‘comfortable’ on the face of it are either looking for escapism OR are desperate to fit in.

Cocaine at children’s parties etc is just reprehensible. I’m sure even a trace could seriously harm a child? What about pets?

Cadburymonster · 03/03/2025 09:57

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 02/03/2025 23:24

Not so unusual from what I've seen... Middle aged professionals (and finance bros) are the only ones who can afford cocaine these days

I am personally against it due to ethics, rather than the drug itself. Not sure I could be friends with people who don't understand or acknowledge the devastation of a drugs journey from production to trafficking to distribition.

I'm a buzz kill, I know. Lol

You aren't a buzzkill, just smart and correct in what you say. I did all that in my late teens and 20s I find it a bit cringe people past 30s still doing anything like that. Each to their own I suppose though.

But, while I take @FeministUnderTheCatriarchy’s point about the exploitative/criminal devastation wrought by the journey of a drug from initial production to your nose, or wherever, and think she’s entirely correct (it’s why I don’t do them, though I have utterly enjoyed cocaine occasionally in the past), I don’t get why drug-taking is any more ‘cringe’ after the age of 30.

I couldn’t give the tiniest of shits how old people are who do drugs. However the parents who have drugs delivered to their homes by kids on bikes when their own kids are tucked up safely in bed particularly get on my tits. Hope that clears things up for you.

"kids" meaning teenagers who'd beat you up for looking at them. Yeah we had a few "kids" like that when I was at secondary school. Still have a fair bunch of them round here
Such lovely innocent victims.

I became a mum at 15 "kids" that age know what they're doing 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oxgodby · 03/03/2025 10:03

And I agree with whoever made the point about old ravers up the thread. That certain reflects my experience of my peers (early 50s) who do drugs regularly.

You clearly have zero desire to understand the points which are being made so it’s pointless engaging with you.

FastFood · 03/03/2025 10:08

I'm one of these people, and so are my friends (male and female), with the rather important caveat that none of us have kids.

Also, not every weekend, maybe once a month, less in winter. Most of the time we have very middle aged lives, going for a walk with the dogs in a park, having a sunday roast, going to an art exhibition, going to a classical music concert etc etc...

Oh I understand the points made I just don't give a shit about feeling sorry for teenage drug dealers. Never met one that wasn't a complete asshole they know exactly what they're doing that's why the age of criminal responsibility is 10.

And I'm allowed to say that because I became a mum at 15 and moved out at 16. Stop infantilising them.

Edited to say I don't do drugs myself but a middle aged professional woman can do them on the weekend just like everyone else if she's so inclined.

Cadburymonster · 03/03/2025 10:11

Developing a coke addiction is going to be a lot more stressful in the long term. For yourself and everyone around you. It destroys lives.

Bogginsthe3rd · 03/03/2025 10:14

Because you should have grown up and have more sense. If I could go back and slap myself I would. Especially if you have children they should be your sole focus. I think cannabis is harmless but not coke. Seen it destroy lives first hand it's not pretty.

Maddy70 · 03/03/2025 10:24

Very common in my experience

Whereas I’ve seen it more often than not be unproblematically enjoyed while socialising in much the same way as alcohol. As I said, I don’t do it myself because of the criminality and the environmental clusterfuck it causes, but, that aside, I don’t see any correlation between growing up and not doing drugs, provided they’re not impacting the rest of your life.

How do you think the people who develop full blown addictions started? It will impact your life then and everyone around you. If you've grown up you're more likely to think of that possibility and not risk it. People think it won't happen to them and then it does. Having no money, full blown paranoia sitting doing it by yourself on a weekday in the house blind twitching and dealers at your door threatening you it's no longer fun.

FluffyDashhound · 03/03/2025 07:52

Elvanse adhd meds lol - legal and least you no what's in them lol

Not ‘legal’ unless you have a prescription. They’re actually a very tightly controlled drug, and illegal to trade. I certainly hope you’re not insinuating you’d ‘fake’ having ADHD to get these drugs?

TempestTost · 03/03/2025 10:55

christmaspudding43 · 03/03/2025 08:02

I don't know; a quick Google suggests county lines is used for weed and mdma as well but how prevalent it is vs coke etc I'm not sure.

So - in his misspent youth, my partner was involved in the drugs trade. Which involved selling weed as well as other things. A lot of his customers were professional types. Interestingly, he has said that successful sellers don't generally partake, and in fact it was always seen as pretty stupid, and bad for business, to do anything more than a little weed.

Weed is legal where I am but still seems to be available illegally as well, apparently the legal stuff is more expensive and not as strong.

Your anecdotal experience of teenage drug dealers is not everyone’s experience of kids doing country lines. Accusing people of infantilising them whilst demonising them to justify your shitty decisions is hypercritical beyond belief.

KatyaKabanova · 03/03/2025 11:13

The teenagers involved in county lines get involved because they are vulnerable, not cared for, not fed properly, not supervised and not raised with confidence, drive and self esteem, in my experience. They are usually very sad cases indeed.

TheIceBear · 03/03/2025 11:13

KatyaKabanova · 03/03/2025 08:17

Plus those who compare cannabis to alcohol use aren't comparing like to like. One glass of wine isn't as harmful as one spliff. People compare it to being alcoholics.

harmful how ? Your comment is so vague. Why does it have to be 1 glass of wine in relation to 1 spliff also ?

Janedoe82 · 03/03/2025 11:19

BeDeepKoala · 03/03/2025 07:00

Yes exactly, once organised crime has got hold of an illegal drugs trade, there is no way to remove them from it by legalisation. Thats why the Mafia still controls all the post-prohibition alcohol trade in America and why its impossible to buy wine unless you personally know Al Capone.

no, wait

Do you know any Belfast paramilitaries?? They have been trying to disband them here for 30 years and might as well have talked to the cat. They are going no where.

You misunderstand. People claim that cannabis is "harmless" in comparison to alcohol consumption. (qv)
Neither substance is harmless, however, those who compare taking cannabis to having one drink and suggesting that the former is less harmful than the latter, are ill informed.

garlictwist · 03/03/2025 11:24

Drugs are not unknown in my social circle, though I can't be arsed with it any more and it's certainly not a regular thing at every social event. I am friends with teachers, tax inspectors, doctors, scientists so I guess "middle aged, professional women".

And here’s little old me worried about having a coffee after 4 pm 🤣🤣

4pm?! I switch to decaf after 12!
