Friends not sponsoring dh

Ok, I know times are hard and there are loads of people asking for sponsorship etc but I’m just a bit hacked off. In the past I’ve sponsored friends kids for things like walking around the playground at lunch time, sponsored silence etc, you get my drift but there’s been loads over the last few years and I always give £10-20. My husband is doing a huge challenge in April and the sponsorship has been live for months and I’ve sent the link out twice and not one of them has sponsored him. None of them are badly off - they just can’t be bothered I reckon and I’m pretty annoyed. AIBU? Would you do? I’ll know better next time when darling Henry wants money for pushing his teddy around the local f’ing playing field.

Depends what the challenge is.

Fiverfiver · 02/03/2025 20:29

What’s the challenge? I get sponsorship requests all the time. Unfortunately a lot of ‘challenges’ are pretty common these days.

Everythingisnumbersnow · 02/03/2025 20:29

I hate hate sponsored things

SallyDraperGetInHere · 02/03/2025 20:30

Is it for a good cause?

LegalBarbie · 02/03/2025 20:30

Of course people sponsor children move than adults.

YABU. You aren’t entitled to someone else’s money.

RedVelvetIcing · 02/03/2025 20:30

Well if they’ve taken in the past they should give back.

Savemefromwetdog · 02/03/2025 20:30

I don’t really want to sponsor anyone to do anything. Marathons are the worst, when people decide to do the marathon and all of a sudden expect everyone else to sponsor them for their charity place, so they can tick something off their bucket list. It’s always sent out like they are doing a massive favour to the world too - I’m running the marathon!!!

I would sponsor the absolute nuts who run with a fridge on their back etc, though.

steff13 · 02/03/2025 20:31

I've never been asked to sponsor an adult. I do it for kids, because they're kids. I'd do it for an adult if it was for a cause I would have donated to anyway.

BassesAreBest · 02/03/2025 20:31

I hate sponsored things and neither do them myself nor donate to anyone else’s.

However, if people are the type to ask for sponsorship then I think they have to be prepared to also give back, so I’d be a bit annoyed if they didn’t.

TheChosenTwo · 02/03/2025 20:31

Is the challenge just an extension of his hobby?
Kids sponsorship things tend to be something they are all asked to do via schools/clubs etc but adults deciding they want to do something really cool but wanting sponsoring for it I find a bit of a gripe of mine.
FIL has been raising money for charity by… walking 100 miles in a month. He walks miles every day anyway so it wasn’t a challenge for him and it’s something he already loves doing - we did donate because it’s fil but I’d have been more generous if he’d done something totally out of his comfort zone and more of a challenge.

Fiverfiver · 02/03/2025 20:31

If it’s in April is it a marathon? Everyone seems to be doing them these days. I’ve done a few myself. Unfortunately the more common they get, the less likely they are to be seen as a ‘challenge’ worthy of sponsorship.

murasaki · 02/03/2025 20:32

I'm not paying for someone to do something they wanted to do anyway, sorry.

Addictforanex · 02/03/2025 20:32

If it’s in April you will probably get a flurry of donations right before it. I ran a marathon for an hugely worthwhile charity and that was the general pattern - friends seemed to put sponsoring me on put it on the “do later” list but generally came good and I’d met my target by the time I got to the start line.

give them one last reminder 2/3 days before.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 02/03/2025 20:32

I'm not 'sponsoring' anyone to achieve their goal. Want to do KMJ, off you go. I I sponsor / donate / volunteer where I want.

BIWI · 02/03/2025 20:33

The thing is, there are so many sponsored things these days - it does get too much.

HeddaGarbled · 02/03/2025 20:33

There’s a big difference between a local community children’s thing and a MAMIL-type hoopla.

Broccoli456 · 02/03/2025 20:33

So many sponsorship these days, but if I do sponsor anyone I tend to do it just before the event or after depending what kind of event it is.

caffelattetogo · 02/03/2025 20:33

Everyone hates sponsorship requests.

edwinbear · 02/03/2025 20:33

When DH got a charity place to run the London Marathon (which I assume this is given it’s April), he just paid the minimum contribution himself. It was something he desperately wanted to do, so happy to basically ‘buy’ a place. I usually get about 10 requests from people each year running the marathon - it does get a bit much.

Comedycook · 02/03/2025 20:33

I'd sponsor friends and relatives children because they're children....but I really really resent sponsoring adults. I begrudgingly give the lowest amount that's socially acceptable but I'd rather give nothing. Yabvu. You have no idea really of what financial pressures people are under.

Floralnomad · 02/03/2025 20:33

What’s he doing and what is he raising money for . I rarely give to sponsored things , I’m happy giving to charity but ones I support not random ones that other people like .

Addictforanex · 02/03/2025 20:33

murasaki · 02/03/2025 20:32

I'm not paying for someone to do something they wanted to do anyway, sorry.

The sponsorship money goes to a charity - not to the person’s current account.

Ashshandmaid · 02/03/2025 20:34

I hate sponsored stuff with a passion for adults). Just normally people just doing stuff they want to do anyway and or to get attention. Normal people just give to charity without making a look at me fuss. It's also totally different a kid doing something than an adult. (gap year his etc don't count and are also awful) Yabu, massively so.

JoyousEagle · 02/03/2025 20:34

Maybe they don't support the cause he's chosen.

SometimesCalmPerson · 02/03/2025 20:34

Sponsoring children is not the same as sponsoring adults who are fulfilling their own bucket list and claiming it’s all about the charity.
