It's actually true. The armed forces are hollowed out.

Britain’s army would run out of munitions ten days into a war, Parliament has been told.
Former armed forces minister John Spellar made the claim during questions about defence.

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/britain-army-munitions-run-out-armed-forces-defence-b1147565.html

and here is Google AI's views on Challenger Tank readiness levels

According to available information, the readiness rate of Challenger 2 tanks is estimated to be around 19% of the total inventory, meaning only a small portion of the UK's Challenger 2 fleet is considered fully operational at any given time, with the remaining tanks either in storage or requiring maintenance; this information is based on the UK's decision to donate a number of Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, which was reported to represent a significant portion of their operational fleet

A backbench opposition MP made a claim during a debate in March 2024. Meaningless.

And I couldn't give less than two shits about what Google's AI says.

Stop aiding our enemies by spreading disinformation about our Armed Forces.

Zelenskyy has said he'll sign the deal. That hasn't changed, unless someone has heard otherwise.

I have heard both last night. I don't know

But again, what do Ukraine get out of signing it? I really don't know. Trump wants out, no war funding, no security. Again your choice. But why would Ukraine sign?

EasternStandard · 03/03/2025 12:35

@sleepwouldbenice you're asking why leaders are signing.

When I answer it's on that, it's really nothing to do with my choice. My choice would be that Putin didn't invade to start with.

Your question has been why, it's because Z is reliant on US tech, kit and comms and they can withdraw all that.

This morning that he would sign seemed to be reiterated but not much on when, so I guess it's wait and see.

Because if the USA have huge interests in Ukrainian land then Russia is less likely to attempt to occupy it.

I keep hoping they will turn on each other, or on Musk. Surely only a matter of time? Not enough space for their three absolutely gigantic egos in the universe the White House.

They will definitely turn against each other .
Trump and self elected Vice President Elon Musk will have a big fall out .

A lot of these putative mineral deposits are in the East, i.e. in the oblasts currently occupied by Russia. How is that going to work?

I'm not aiding anyone but the armed forces. For three decades they have had to suffer cut after cut and to make it worse they have had to deal with the complete fuckwits at MOD Procurement. You are the one spreading the dangerous propaganda by trying to insist everything is fine.

We barely even have any heavy artillery left, we have more admirals than ships, and as many generals as tanks.

In short, we are in a very bad position to be threatening war with a country that does have wartime production and doesn't scrap it's kit the moment it is retired from service.

LifeExperience · 03/03/2025 11:26

It may be up to Russia, but Ukraine without the US is a dead man walking. And we're out. The UK has 25 functioning tanks and less than a week's worth of ammunition. Things are gonna get spicy for your boots on the ground.

That number refers to the Challenger 2, other armoured or tracked vehicles are available.

And you support this? You could ask for fair recompense forfuture support, and to be 1st in the queue, but you support profiting from it?

I know you have provided much aid at a great cost to yourselves, but this was provided under arrangements agreed by your former president, like it or not.so repayment of that is a vulnerable request

So, putting former aid aside, you support profiteering from Ukraine?

Less likely yes. But nowhere near guaranteed and for how long? Until they have been bled dry?
And it's also true about the minerals within the land taken by force. Through invasion

EasternStandard · 03/03/2025 13:07

I know you have provided much aid at a great cost to yourselves

@sleepwouldbenice you have the wrong poster here. I'm not in the US.

I'm only answering your 'why sign' questions. Ie the leaders' motivations.

BeyondMyWits · 03/03/2025 13:16

The UK won't go on the ground in Ukraine unless as part of a peacekeeper force. So there will be a ceasefire in place first.

Then it gets interesting. In times of "peace", Ukraine will be compelled to hold elections... that will be forced after Zelensky signs away their mineral riches to the US. Whilst the Russians take time to rest and reinforce.

CHEESEY13 · 03/03/2025 13:21

Trump, Vance and Musk: three Alpha Males with no moral compass whatsoever. A perfect storm when you chuck Putin into the mix.

You're talking about a land war with Russia and the Challenger 2 is your main battle tank. I've looked at your Order of Battle. You're weak everywhere, really, but air support, combat arms and C3I are really lacking.

Zelensky's gov't can't communicate with his troops without American comms. He's blind without American intel. You might be able to fill some of that gap, but not enough, and definitely not soon enough.

Your training and doctrine, and the configuration of your forces, are only designed to work with those of the US, not to go into battle independently. And it will take time and a many billions of dollars to change that.

A price we will pay. Now I suggest you get on with making your country Great Again and leave us Brits (and the more understanding Americans) to discuss this without more disparaging distractions.

I wouldn't underestimate Vance. He's evil but he's bright.
And I do think he will be the next one after Trump. Which makes it utterly scary and miserable.

I was thinking earlier Vance is like a malign Captain Darling.

CheerfulYank · 03/03/2025 15:53

I was embarrassed to be American when I saw the video. They’re both just horrible bullies with zero sense of manners or class or anything else. We’ve had presidents in the past and I haven’t liked them or their policies but they at least knew how to speak to people with respect.

Trump and Vance are disgusting. Oddly enough I feel sort of detached from it all this time around. I think in his first term I would have cared about the people losing their jobs or farms because of his policies but now I know most of them voted for him, and I do not care in the slightest. There are some very hard lessons to be learned this time around and I hope with all my heart that every one of my countrymen gets exactly what they voted for.

Wildflowers99 · 03/03/2025 16:25

Excellent slap down of Farage by Starmer at PMQs just now.

@CheerfulYank It was a very very uncomfortable watch, certainly. It’s hard, I know there are many decent Americans suffering under his policies and they’ll suffer the dual burden of that and the fury/distaste of Europe. I know Trump doesn’t represent probably even the majority of people but his fan base is so hardcore and devoted they’re essentially a lost cause.

Walkaround · 03/03/2025 16:28

What people in the US voted for is an end to law and order and ceding of control of the West to the global mafia. Countries like Australia are now alarmed about security in the Asia-Pacific, because the US is no longer to be trusted and is no longer an ally, it’s a rogue state.

I feel for you.

And yes, I can't imagine Reagan or either George Bush (just thinking of US presidents I've not much liked) behaving anything like Trump and Vance did. They still had some courtesy and decency.
