It looks like the latest is Mandelson has said go and sign the deal. Nothing changed on it.

Whether he will immediately not sure.

Thanks
I just hear Z say it was ready to sign
I just don't understand why he would
To use the much abused phrase about cards left to play....its the main one he's got, why give it away?

EasternStandard · 02/03/2025 22:30

@sleepwouldbenice it's likely because he can't keep going without the US and they'll walk if he doesn't. The U.K. has said sign which means Europe can't replace US.

The other side is Russia and no idea if they'll sign or accept troops.

sleepwouldbenice · 02/03/2025 22:34

I have just heard something about the Ukrainian prime minister saying no minerals without security, yet Z said its ready to sign!

Confused and giving up!!

Tiswa · 02/03/2025 22:39

My assumption is that Trump went in using negotiation tactics he used many times in business because based on the US economy he doesn’t want to commit more on troops. He wants the mineral agreement to be enough thah the US has a stake in Ukraine and Russia backs off (potentially after losing some land) without having to commit more funds

Zelenskyy is a man at war thiugh and emotions came in and Trump and Vance showed who they are

Panterusblackish · 02/03/2025 22:41

MotherofPearl · 02/03/2025 17:41

Seeing Mr Zelenskyy having a nice cup of tea with our PM this morning was a balm to my senses.

Me too; I know what you mean. God knows our Labour government is far from perfect and Starmer has his detractors, but at least we can be confident that he's not going bully and shout at the head of state of one of allies on live TV.

He looks positively statesmanlike next to Trump

southerngirl10 · 02/03/2025 19:56

Before that it was the British Empire taking over the world. Worst empire that ever existed and at its peak still within living memory. Holier than thou brits. What hypocrites we are, eh

Worse by what measures and which comparable empires? Persian, roman, ottoman, Mongolian, Russian, Chinese, many more of course and many more regimes who conquered lands and peoples over many thousands of years

Happyearlyretirement · 02/03/2025 23:12

Makes me weep

sleepwouldbenice · 02/03/2025 23:35

I am slightly disappointed that Charles was not seen saying "nice outfit" to Z this afternoonGrin

MarsScarlet · 02/03/2025 23:52

@Pairymoppins

I agree with this, Trump needs to pull it back a bit so that he doesn’t alienate the entire Western world and so he still stands a chance with the whole Nobel peace prize thing. I also don’t think he really wants to be only allied with Putin- they both know they can’t trust the other.

I think Trump is a long shot for the Nobel Peace Prize now. I wish him luck though.

Arrivals4lucky · 03/03/2025 07:16

The Nobel Peace Prize… well, I suppose if Henry Kissinger for ‘ending’ the Vietnam War could win it anyone could…

Presumably, he has no choice - either Russia gets the minerals, or the US does. Probably, the US will get the minerals and Russia will get Ukraine, then Russia will get the minerals, because the US is led by Donald Trump. Then China will get Taiwan.

Walkaround · 03/03/2025 08:02

US arms manufacturers will become very wealthy, of course.

Bollindger · 03/03/2025 08:04

Can I ask how do we stop this war?
Do we just keep paying for the next decade?
Keep letting people die, till there are on men left in their country...

I read the estimated value of the minerals in the lands already taken by Russia is about £360bn. Ironically similar to the fake inflated value mentioned by Trump of the value of sid from the US

Discussed already many times. Its up to Ukraine and Russia, not for it to be decided elsewhere

But why sign though?

EasternStandard · 03/03/2025 10:45

@sleepwouldbenice because he can't continue without the US and they'll walk if he doesn't

He can continue without the US. The combined professional military force in Europe is double that of the US and it’s looking increasingly as if the will is there to use it. After three years of war at huge cost to Ukraine it’s ridiculous to think Zelenskyy would just roll over or that his country would ever forgive him if he did.

twinklystar23 · 03/03/2025 10:56

So by that reasoning should europe not get their portion of rare earth minerals?

Raping the victims' wealth that they will need to rebuild. Or perhaps like britain, ukraine coyld repay them over decades for their oh so kind contibution to supporting a sovereign state invaded by an aggressor.
All to keep the US onside ?

EasternStandard · 03/03/2025 10:45

@sleepwouldbenice because he can't continue without the US and they'll walk if he doesn't

But what have they promised him if he does sign? I am not aware of anything?

Mielikki · 03/03/2025 11:05

What actually is the deal? My understanding is that contract consists of performance and consideration - here the deal seems to be that the Ukraine is expected to sign over half its mineral wealth in return for... what exactly?

EasternStandard · 03/03/2025 11:05

@sleepwouldbenice that the opposite won't happen. That US could pull military kit, tech and comms.

He's said he'll sign, I think that hasn't changed so if it goes ahead it's just the same document as last time with no security clause added.

It's only one part though, Russia have to sign still

’Not pissing off Trump’ is my understanding.

Wildflowers99 · 03/03/2025 11:10

sleepwouldbenice · 03/03/2025 09:53

But why sign though?

Because the idea is that the USA having huge interest in Ukraine by way of rare mineral harvesting would in itself deter Russia from invading. Because if they do, they mess with USA interest, and then the Americans can retaliate under that umbrella rather than the ‘defending Ukraine’ one.

LifeExperience · 03/03/2025 11:14

DrummingMousWife · 02/03/2025 17:07

I reckon Trump will fire JD and blame him for all this “mess” with Zelensky . trump is known to scapegoat those around him and tell a twisted tale, so now people are outside with banners I reckon he will look for a way to blame to Vance

POTUS can't fire VPOTUS. Not allowed under the Constitution.
