Though once the mining has finished and ukraines resouces are depleted the rich get richer (looking at trump vance misk putin and their mates) whats to stop putin nibbling off yet another bit of another state. If those other neighbours are all NATO is the US then going to step in as a NATO member? Given the recent statements frim trump i would not be sure.

Especially when Trump and Vance have done fuck all for Zelensky. That was all Biden and the pettiness is astounding.

Trump ran on not doing fuck all for Ukraine and won.

Discussed already many times. Its up to Ukraine and Russia, not for it to be decided elsewhere

It may be up to Russia, but Ukraine without the US is a dead man walking. And we're out. The UK has 25 functioning tanks and less than a week's worth of ammunition. Things are gonna get spicy for your boots on the ground.

You’re out, so why are you still here? Don’t you have some cats to rescue from hungry immigrants or something?

Thats quite offensive. I have family members in the armed forces, please consider your responses

No, the US will not step in, especially as a NATO member. I just did some research on the NATO treaty and it turns out that the abrogation clause allows POTUS to singlehandedly pull out of NATO. No Senate approval necessary as I had previously presumed. A law signed just before Trump took office (NDAA 2024) tried to make the process harder, but it doesn't comport with the Constitution and so has a very high chance of being overturned by the Supremes. So all Trump has to do is give a one year notice and we're out. It was announced today that we're pulling 20,000 troops out of Europe.

I'm a retired American military officer and that is the parlance. In fact that is the "nice" parlance. You don't want me to get earthy about it.

Those who've had their asses in the shit don't really care so much about civilian sensibilities other than to try to wake you up to the reality that is combat. Pearl clutching is for remfs (Google it.)

Your government is making promises that your military can't fulfill. That is a fact regardless of how uncomfortable you are with it.

Outright lies.

It's actually true. The armed forces are hollowed out.

Britain’s army would run out of munitions ten days into a war, Parliament has been told.
Former armed forces minister John Spellar made the claim during questions about defence.

and here is Google AI's views on Challenger Tank readiness levels

According to available information, the readiness rate of Challenger 2 tanks is estimated to be around 19% of the total inventory, meaning only a small portion of the UK's Challenger 2 fleet is considered fully operational at any given time, with the remaining tanks either in storage or requiring maintenance; this information is based on the UK's decision to donate a number of Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, which was reported to represent a significant portion of their operational fleet

Your government is making promises that your military can't fulfill.

Given the Independent article you've linked I doubt we'll go near it without US security

Which isn't in the deal about to be signed.

We might not be there at all, despite press conferences

@sleepwouldbenice because he can't continue without the US and they'll walk if he doesn't

So trump does fuck all for Ukraine yet you think they should have the minerals

Oh Eastern, take the day off.

We’ve made our position very clear. We will defend Ukraine with or without US support. We don’t know what will happen going forwards, but we, and most of the EU, will be supporting them.

The US has had its hissy fit and should now politely step away and let the adults address the issue, rather than being like children who insist they want to be left alone while constantly trying to sit on your knee.

@Wildflowers99 you can scroll past or take a day off if you want.

You are not the thread police even if you feel you should be.

I understand your position, you think Europe will fight regardless. I don't agree with your take.

EasternStandard · 03/03/2025 12:02

@sleepwouldbenice you asked why would he sign.

I answered why that could be. If you want wish lists ask for that, if you really do want to know motivations of leaders that's different.

Zelenskyy has said he'll sign the deal. That hasn't changed, unless someone has heard otherwise.

PandoraSox · 03/03/2025 12:20

Lech Wałęsa and former Polish political prisoners compare Trump and Vance to Communist interrogaters:

"Former Polish president and 1983 Nobel Peace prize winner Lech Wałęsa signed a letter to US president Donald Trump expressing “horror and distaste” at his argument with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the White House last week.

The letter, signed by Wałęsa and over 30 former Polish political prisoners during the communist era, said that Trump and Vance’s demands that Zelenskyy showed gratefulness were “insulting” in the face of the Ukrainian nation’s heroic fight for freedom.

The signatories said that the “atmosphere in the Oval Office reminded us of that we remember well from interrogations” by Poland’s communist secret services and regime courts.

“The prosecutors and the judges, working on behalf of the omnipotent Communist party police, also told us that they held all the cards, and we held none,” they said.

“We are shocked that you treated Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the same, way,” they said.

They also reminded Trump of the US obligations under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which provided security guarantees for Ukraine in exchange for return of Soviet-era nuclear weapons."

I was really surprised to watch the video, I only caught up with it last night.

What struck me is it was two on one, why did trump need his number 2 there? Zelensky was never going to get 50% of the conversation in like that.

Moreover I was amazed that this guy who was speaking in a second language and doing a great job of it wasn't even allowed to get his words out.

The business of "did you even say thank you?" was extremely undiplomatic and unprofessional of Vance. That's the sort of thing you say to your five year old. I'm aware that trump is old enough to be Zelenskyy's father but Vance isn't!!

I don't fully understand all the ins and outs of this war, but this was truly a moment thay will go down in history.

Seeing Mr Zelenskyy having a nice cup of tea with our PM this morning was a balm to my senses.

It’s his third language, russian is his second

RareLemur · 03/03/2025 12:27

Will Trump turn on Vance? He knows to have a VP that is thoroughly unsuitable to be President is probably stopping some to impeach him, because (as with Pence) people are thinking "if we get rid of Trump, is what's coming next even worse?"
