To be jealous of everyone getting slim in weight loss jabs while I get fatter !

Okay - lighthearted ? Maybe.

I’ve been lucky to grow up and be a size 10 . Had a baby at 27. Lost all the weight but my body changed. Baby 2 , again gained 4 stone but I’ve always kept the last stone. I am now 12/14 uk.

I work full time and have two children . I eat healthy for the most part and walk and exercise. When I am super strict which feels so much harder at 40 I am a size 12 but unlike in my 30s it seems so much harder to lose weight now . I feel crap in my clothes and I wish and dream of being a size 10. Call me pathetic !

My brother and his wife , twos sisters and their husbands , work colleagues and a few of my good friends who were never obese but had a few stone to lose are all taking weight loss jabs. They have all lost around 2/3/4 stone and are all now looking fab . All the women are now in size 8 jeans and I am jealous. I sound pathetic . None of these ladies were any bigger than a 14/16 to start with.

I totally understand these jabs are so life changing for so many people who need them but it seems in my life everyone has taken them and gone from a 14/16 to a size 8/6 size Uk and I can’t help but feel like if I just bloody jump on the bandwagon I will feel good, feel happy and be slim.

Now everyone around me is so slim I feel ever more aware of my size .

I want to state I exercise and do eat a healthy diet . I have just found after two babies and getting older unless I basically stick to 1200 calories a day I can’t maintain a size 12.
Ahhhhhh. Sorry for sounding so so so vain.

@Sundayslump 3 weeks ago i cut down all added sugar. Mostly because im over 40 and worried about developing type 2 diabetes. In these 3 weeks the weight has just fallen off me.
It has been hard. Mentally and physically. My ibs has had worse flares than ever before, and ive had to find other ways to deal with my emotions than the pick-me-up from sugar. Ive lost about 4kgs without even trying and without exercise 😬
I wouldn't risk the jabs. Not enough is known of the side effects. Being healthy is more important than being slim. Having said that, cutting out unnecessary white sugar and oil is never bad. So try that.

I agree with this. I've lost over a stone by reducing carbs and stopping all snacking. I'm just not so hungry any more.

I try low carb but it's really tough if you are veggie. And don't like fake meat

OP, I’m doing a pre diabetes course (NHS) at the moment and the nutritionist leading it is fairly dismissive of the jabs. She says it’s important to learn to have a balanced diet/exercise for yourself because it’s more sustainable over a lifetime.

She also reckons the jabs basically mimic the hormone effect that you get if you eat more slowly and more mindfully.

It sounds as if she needs to go back to school herself.

I think you’d probably be better off chatting with women on the Mounjaro thread for example and see first hand what they are putting into place so that when their Mounjaro journey is over they’re set up for life with new habits.

YANBU. I do worry slightly that there haven’t been any longer term studies yet on these jabs for weight loss (only for diabetes afaik) AND we don’t know how whether those who lose the weight will keep it off yet- meaning it may not be worth the costs/side effect risks until we know more.

But surely people will have to volunteer for these studies? Someone’s got to be the first to try it.

They are not new drugs. They’ve been used for years to treat diabetes. The research is extensive prior to the move to being for weight loss. Governments don’t just randomly approve a change of use.

GLP1 medications have been used to treat diabetes for 20 years, we do know the effect of these medications.

It will depend on your starting weight, height TDEE.

in the UK the vast majority of women are short 5’5” or less. So 1200/1300 is about right. You need 500 calorie a day deficit. Age comes into it as well.

Yes but if you're obese your TDEE will be higher, likewise if you're active. I'm just under 12 stone now and 5'4, moderately active, 10k steps a day, gym twice a week. My TDEE is 2100 a day. I can lose 1lb a week on 1600. That will go down as I lose weight but nobody should be starting mounjaro on 1200 calories a day unless they are a real outlier. When I started my TDEE was 2300.

I agree with this. I've lost over a stone by reducing carbs and stopping all snacking. I'm just not so hungry any more.

I’ve noticed from all of the threads about weight loss jabs that they all reduce their carb/sugar intake.

We absolutely need carbs for energy but we eat too much of them (usually by portion size) and we crave them/they are our go-to food source when we’re tired or hungry.

I think the weight loss jabs get rid of the food noise that makes you crave carbs/sugar as much and as a result you lose weight.

If you can go on a lower carb diet, I believe you will lose just as much weight as you would on the injections and you don’t have the expense, side effects or as much weight gain.

I have lost weight by reducing my carbs because 1. I am fuller/have less food noise and 2. I tend to overeat them because they taste nice.

I still eat carbs and will still allow myself a takeaway etc but I’m still losing weight (without jabs) because I’ve found reducing the carbs has a knock on effect for everything else.

TwoRobins · 02/03/2025 10:37

I don't think YANBU. You feel how you feel and have a right to say it. There's no point in denying it to yourself, either. I feel the same.

capybaraqueen · 02/03/2025 10:38

researchers3 i wondered the same but i know myself and once i'm at my target weight, can fit into all my size 8's - i usually love this more than sugar bingeing. let's see!

FWIW Loads of people here stay on a very low dose permanently, or pop onto it when they want to drop a few kilos. i'm open to that but really want to avoid it as it's 300 quid a month here!

the attitude to it here is so different to the uk. i resisted as long as i could but i'm 50 - i've spent 35 years denying myself, watching every mouthful, ignoring the food noise and exercising.

i won't lie, i wanted an easier option to drop 5 kg. and for me it has been absolutely amazing. i have zero appetite (have to force myself to eat) and no side effects.

Overhaul54 · 02/03/2025 09:27

I'm on them with the same issues you have Op. Everyone else is on them.
Sadly Mounjaro has done zilch for either appetite or binge drinking.
I'll carry on until the end of the month ( there's 4 doses in a pen) but won't bother with more.

I found Fast 800 worked really well. However I lack the motivation to start ( it's super easy once you get over the initial first few days). I hoped the jab would help but seems not.

Are you on 2.5mg? Did you not know that is a starting dose and not effective for all people? This is why nobody should consider mounjaro a quick fix. You need to be ready to commit to 6 months before you start.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 02/03/2025 10:39

Sundayslump · 02/03/2025 08:31

In my head i suppose I

  1. Worry that there must be long term side effects we aren’t aware of ?
  2. Worry I will then have to take them for life . Which concerns me medically and financially
  3. I have this dream/ hope I can get on a diet and stick to it and lose a stone naturally !!!!

In my twenties and 30s I could lose weight quite easily - now it seems so hard!!

I took Ozempic for a while. I had a lot of weight to lose (morbidly obese).

I lost around 1kg a week and found it easy staying below 1500 cals because I didn't have an appetite.

I took my injections in a Sunday evening and I would spend that whole night throwing up and nauseous with horrible heartburn... Monday to Saturday I would be fine, but I was sick for a good 6 or so hours every Sunday night.
(I stayed on the starter dose the whole time, and never stopped being sick).

I did lose weight, but it took all the joy of food away from me and I hated throwing up every week. I worried for my teeth and health overall

I stopped it after about 4 months and immediately put it all back on within a few months. I was ravenous, like my body just went into overdrive after being deprived.

The absolute worst thing is my body composition completely changed. I've always carried my weight on my legs and thighs, now I have a really big, round tummy. All the weight I lost went straight to my tummy.

I was a pretty classic hourglass no matter my weight my whole life, now I am an apple. I am completely round.
It is so bizarre and I can't find anything online, but I do have a friend who experienced the same.

Finally I decided to just try it in my own and I have gone keto.
I have lost the exact same amount of weight but I am enjoying my food. I love steaks and veg, so it's perfect.

My skin is clear, I feel healthy, I am inky every hungry about an hour before I'm due to eat and I have no food noise.

I would never take ozempic again, not when I am steadily losing weight and having the pleasure of great food and i feel healthy which is the most important thing.

Fedupmumofadultsons · 02/03/2025 10:39

I sound thick but what is food noise

MoonWoman69 · 02/03/2025 10:41

I'm definitely going to get flamed here, but here goes! This is just my personal opinion.

I do not agree that weight loss jabs should be available to absolutely everyone. No matter if they're able to afford them or not.
I think they should be prescribed by doctors only for people who are morbidly obese and have tried everything else or have medical issues. Not people who want to just drop a stone or two!
And before anyone comments, I am speaking from experience, as I was a clothes size 28/30 for the majority of my life. If the jabs had been available back then, there is no way I'd have considered going down that route. It's an easy out to me. How do you maintain the loss when you reach your ideal weight? From what I've seen, people who stop using them, pile the weight back on.
I have 2 friends who did/do use the jabs, the first one was prescribed by the doctor, due to medical issues. She was violently ill most of the time, but was told to hang in there. Now she's down to her ideal weight, but still doesn't feel well.
My 2nd friend is on them now, but to my mind, she doesn't need them. She's being pushed and part funded by a close relative who is literally obsessed with my friends weight. She's fairly active and with a sensible diet, she could easily lose that weight (not that there is much to lose!) herself.

I lost weight by altering my diet, sorting my portion sizes out and doing a little bit more exercise. And I'd spent years on one diet or another, where I'd steadily lose a couple of pounds a week, then hit a plateau and the rest wouldn't shift.
Once I got my head around that fact that I wasn't on a "diet" I was just eating healthier, smaller portions, then the weight steadily started to drop off.
So far I've lost 8 stones, I'm in size 18/20 and although I'm not down to the weight I "should" be, I'm a lot happier with myself. me if that's the weight I can only reach, then I'm happy with that.
I just think that the way too easy ability to get the jabs online, is actually feeding peoples vanity. It's not putting any effort in, it's putting a jab in! And I see that as cheating.

But each to their own, as I said in my opening sentence, these are just my personal views.

Boohoo76 · 02/03/2025 10:41

FatGirlLosing · 02/03/2025 10:26

Yep, I started with a BMI of 30.4 (5’7, 88kg) and am a size 14 in most shops. Also says something about high street sizing these days! I don’t think anybody I know would have thought of me as obese. Frankly I was shocked myself when I realised.

I think the problem is that many people confuse obese with morbidly obese. They don’t understand what obese actually is. It’s so common to see people that are morbidly obese these days, that people overlook how unhealthy it is to be obese.

Sampler · 02/03/2025 10:43

@MoonWoman69 Effort is required with the injections. Nothing magical happens.

CerealPosterHere · 02/03/2025 10:45

Youreboringme · 02/03/2025 09:56

Quite. Aesthetics.

It’s not aesthetics if you qualify for it even privately though. You have to be obese to qualify. So that’s medical. Some people may get away with lying I guess but the companies have clamped down and people have to send in photo id, then photos of their body as well as measurements which are then assessed. So you have to at least look obese.

OP do you know all these stats for definite or are you just guessing? Are many of these women very tall?

To have 4 stone to lose and be in 14/16 clothes would be unusual unless someone is very tall. I'm 5 ft 4 and have lost 4 stone on MJ, prior to starting I was in size 18 -20 clothes. I'm now a size 12 - to get into a size 8 I'd have to lose probably another 2 stone which would then be a 6 stone loss. I'm not going to because at almost 50 I'd look ill.

It sounds like you are just into your 40s. As someone about 10 years ahead of you my advice is let go of your younger self as far as possible. I was a size 6 in my teens and a size 8-10 through my 20s and most of my 30s. For the vast majority of women a very low BMI is not sustainable as we age. A healthy one, yes, but a goal of being a size 8 through our latter decades is not helpful IMO.

I say this with kindness because age 40 -50 is a big transitionary period and readjusting expectations is part of that. Mentally I found that more difficult at 40 than at 49. I also weight train now because I want to be strong, I want my bones to be strong to carry me into old age, I want to be healthy, I don't want to be obese but I don't desire being skinny either.

Don't worry about what other people are doing, work out what is best for you to be healthy.

I was in size 16 when I started at 14.5 stone which is 4 stone overweight and BMI of 33, 5'4. Bodies are shaped differently and clothes sizes aren't a very good measure of how overweight someone is. I'm still wearing my size 16 clothes they are just loose on me, nearly 3 stone later!
