AIBU to ask people not to guilt trip over on the S&B boards?

Anyone else getting a bit sick of people hijacking threads on S&B?

I have been on MN for many years. It has seen me through living in 4 other countries, through infertility, nightmare pregnancies, issues with DC, a terrible menopause, my marriage in tatters a couple of times and more. The AIBU and Relationship boards and the advice I have been given has seen me through a lot of things. As a result I now consider myself a very well informed woman.

Over the past week I have had to wait on results to see if my only remaining parent has something very nasty wrong with them.

During these times, I, and I am sure other women will take a time out, a break, and go on the Style and Beauty board. It is light relief to get away from your problems and see what's going on over there. For example, what is the latest glow product, or what trainers someone is buying. It's a mental break.

AIBU, or this could be more of a plea. Can people NOT go on there and piss on everyone chips? Yes, we know that there are issues in the world. We know that someone in a war torn country is more important than the latest Tom Ford mascara. However, can we discuss that on other boards please?

Some of us just want to escape our own sh!t and talk about something nice without being made to feel guilty about dropping a tenner on a T shirt from H&M.

AIBU?

Just interested in the shapes you make @Travail that's all

I have neither S or B, but I did stumble across the palazzo (?) jeans... I love them! I'd never be able to carry them off. I didn't post.
I haven't seen anything, but do not frequent.

What do the posters gain from it - the negative ones? Are you all rich, thin, tall and gorgeous? I'm tall!

I think what happens is that S&B threads turn up in active or trending and people who have absolutely no interest in S&B turn up to let everyone know that they have absolutely no interest in S&B.

It's fine to ignore them though.

I've frequently noticed that threads are jumped on to declare that posters should wear something they like and not care what anybody else thinks. It comes up ALL the time in threads wondering if anybody still wears skinny jeans.

Obviously the person who created the thread wants to go with the current trends but is beaten down by people who are desperate to continue wearing skinnies and think by shouting down and 'declaring' that skinny jeans are a classic, that people on S&B will somehow believe them. Its boring esp when the whole point of the thread was looking for an alternative.

Big!

I'm wearing a very voluminous Jil Sander maxi skirt, a big woven belt I bought from a market, and a big but lightly woven merino cable knit from Beaumont Organics.

Pointy knee high boots (burgundy), they're Chloè about eight years ago.

I don't buy into the only big on the top or bottom Trinny and Susannah nonsense.

I have always done absolute volume or absolute form fit. They both work.

Different things.

I hate politeness with clothes. Be anything but polite.

Gardening never gets laid into, so why does S &B??

I agree.

But, I also agree that style is really fucking personal and innate.

And, I also see, that a great many people want to feel that but don't know how to.

And that's hard. When, women want to have a style that not only reflects them, but they don't want to feel 'dated', and it's difficult when they, as individuals, are interested in fashion, but, are not educated in design language.

It's really difficult to try and express oneself.

Individuality, in all ways is hard.

Very difficult to express without whatever.

That's so true, I hadn't thought of that. You don't get people coming on the a thread about pruning going "I have never pruned my roses, why do you care, just do it however you want".

I think you do see it, when people ask for help with Astro turf for example. Everyone wades in to say how shit it is and why she shouldn’t buy it, when that wasn’t the question asked.

Ah yes, I can imagine that would happen. There is a thread at the moment about tummy tuck recommendations, and it only took about two posts before someone popped up to say mother's shouldn't feel the need for surgery and the OP should just be happy with her lot 🙄

Oh FFS! That's right 'Mothers know your place, which is prone across the Altar of Mummy Martyrdom, wearing a fugly Joules fleece and Hotter boots.'

Oh my god this. The skinny jeans crew are obsessed with telling other posters how everyone is still wearing skinny jeans and any other type of jeans is hideous, and literally impossible to pair with any type of top, boot or shoe.
They will hector and sneer at anyone who dares to mention that they would like a more current silhouette, belittling them with comments about how they should keep wearing a ‘classic’, as by deviating they are only trying to impress/be younger/ a fashion victim.

They will also point out that Kate Moss still wears them.

ItisIbeserk · 09/03/2025 08:03

Ironically I still see skinny jeans as ‘new’ and have never worn them. I don’t think they suit me. I was always aware I was being unfashionable in sticking to bootcut though.

Oh gosh yes, Lippies and nail polish 😍😍😍😍

I recently bought allllll the new Fenty Stix, and I’m enjoying Dior Vernis Saint-Tropez on my toes… that nail polish is like 12 years old or older and still going strong, nothing’s happened to it in all these years 🤯

Nail polish is pretty indestructible. There's a YouTube channel called Vintage Dusties where she finds old nail polish and revives it. Some of it is decades old! You can buy nail polish thinner for dried up nail polish and you can buy nail polish base (just clear nail polish, which works better for dried up glitter nail polish, but in a big squeezy pouch) as well.

One of my friends is pretty judgy about my make up hoard. I had DS last year and the amount of comments I've had about selling my stuff from people. No one is going to want old (over ten years old in some cases) make up/nail polish by Barry M/Revolution/Maybelline/Revlon etc.

My newer Orly/Holo Taco stuff, maybe? But I'm not selling that for anyone. (I recently got the Holo Taco x DAVIDS tea nail polishes, but I haven't told her that because she'd disapprove.) And one of my most prized possessions is the Holo Taco x Safiya collection box set. 🥰 Funny how buying nail polish is a waste of money but buying books isn't. 🤔🙄 Before anyone asks, DS gets plenty of money spent on him too!

Indeed. OP asks a question 'to those who have had botox...' cue response from "I've never had botox in my life and never would. Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole so therefore know as little about it as is possible to know. However whenever I see it in a thread title I somehow become an expert on the subject and rush over to tell you that you will look like a weird alien with a duck pout. That you are sad with low self esteem. That botox will make you look even older and eventually your face will probably fall off. The fact that I don't know the difference between botox, fillers, extensive plastic surgery and a hole in the ground gives me a special insight into the subject. Believe me, I can ALWAYS TELL."

It's not just this board either. The other one that annoys me is the Menopause board.

You aren't allowed to talk about natural remedies over there. If you do your thread will be taken over by women who tell you that your bones are going to turn to dust, you will have heart failure and a stroke if you don't take HRT and how you'll look 85 when you are 52 if you don't. There are some very serious HRT pushers on there who have libraries of research to instantly discredit anything you say about a vitamin or supplement.

If you want to go the natural route, you've been ill advised, or your GP is incompetent.

Oh yes 100% agree with you.

(And I was on one of the threads I suspect you are referring to. And I'm still waiting for my reply when I asked their medical qualifications...)

And if you are being treated privately or by a specialist, you always always have to state this 😂
