To think Trump is right

1000 replies

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 01/03/2025 08:04

Watching the press conference last night which descended into an argument

I can't help think Trump was right and made good points

Thousands of troops are dying and being seriously injured every month

Trump wants it to stop

There are thousands of people who have children alive today who will not be alive tomorrow because of this war

They are clearly in a stalemate and soldiers are now dying untill peace terms are made as no side can win on the battlefield

Trump as brutal as it sounds was being realistic about what peace would be like

Ukraine has to be realistic

If Ukraine sign the rare earth deal with America then America will have a stake in Ukraine and they should then get a better security deal

Trump has not agreed what that is yet, it's clear he wants the European's to form a big part of that

The European's want American troops and for good reason

But this has to stop and the only way it will stop is by peace negotiations

And these have to be realistic and Trump is saying it as it is

I can’t believe Vance had the cheek to argue against conscription, when Vietnam was waged by the very men the US conscripted. Vance needs a history lesson.

Vietnam should never have happened in the first place. And conscription was incredibly unpopular: it was never done again.

Can someone just suggest what the next steps are without US support. All I can see is a wider war or Ukrainian capitulation.

Sadly we in Europe have based our whole security ethos on the fact that the USA will help. Clearly this may be changing.... So what's the plan now?

We have to redefine who are allies are and Europe/the UK needs to reduce its use of fossil fuels from outside the UK/Europe and focus on rearmament and increasing troops Fast (and we all need to pay more income tax to do this)

poetryandwine · 01/03/2025 11:20

Thanks for this.

As you said all sides will need to compromise, what do you suggest for Russia’s contribution to a peace process?

What on earth do you mean by saying "no country is going to enter the war to support Ukraine?" Multiple countries have already entered the war by providing aid, military support, knowledge and tools to rebuild critical infrastructure etc.

Would you put boots on the ground? Would any Western European country do this? Very much doubt that you would

poetryandwine · 01/03/2025 11:22

Sorry, @Biscuitsnotcookies , I see you answered without tagging and it slipped by me

Yes, the UK and France have already said as much.

This is one of the finest lessons that will go down in history. Never get into bed with the US administration because one day that table will turn and will turn against you and your country losing bit by bit being exploited. Whilst it's unbelievable to you today, this has been the case for many countries in the past especially countries you really didn't care about. I come from two of these countries and both have experienced this. One in the 1960s my mother's home country and one in the 1990s from my father's home country. It seems outrageous to you today because it's Trumps administration doing this in-front of the cameras, otherwise this was always done to many countries behind the cameras and away from you. This is why I voted for the UK to stay in the EU but unfortunately the force behind Farage's propaganda won that isolating us more pushing us balls deep into that bed.

Yesterday was a sad day for most Americans and all Ukrainians and the world.

Getbackinthebox · 01/03/2025 11:23

I am sure the Ukrainians dont want their own people dying either (and have no choice but to kill the armies attacking them to defend themselves. However, they are fighting for their existence. They had their country invaded. Capitulating to Putin will mean a terrible existence for the Ukranians living in fear of Russia on their doorstep whilst Putin rebuilds his army for another onslaught. Europe needs to wake up fast, the world order has changed and America are Russia’s allies now and building their friendship with the Saudis too. Where will it stop? And what have the Russians got on Trump I wonder?

I don't know, but the problem is that thanks to Trump, America has already capitulated to Putin.

It has been clear that America wanted to end its involvement with foreign wars for a long time and it has long been known that American support for Ukraine was not inexhaustible. Biden pulled out of Afghanistan and left chaos. But at least he fell short of openly siding with the Taliban.

The compromises Russia will have to make will be to give up the idea of taking over Ukraine and concede some areas that are in contention. They will I hope, continue to be punished financially and economically to the end of time.

Edited

Thanks again for this. Should Russia give back Ukrainian territory it currently controls?

RingoJuice · 01/03/2025 11:24

You won’t even frack and you rejected setting up nuclear power plants over a decade ago now.

European countries are incredibly unserious when they speak like this. But I suppose this is the sort of challenge that will make you put away childish things and become a serious country again.

Maurepas · 01/03/2025 11:24

OK - who of you all with sons aged 18 - 25 years old are willing to see them go to Ukraine to fight against Russia (whose troops now include released criminals ), their Korean allies and any sundry mercenaries?

Hancox432 · 01/03/2025 11:25

OneLemonDog · 01/03/2025 11:19

I guess we'll soon find out, because that's what we're looking at.

I don't think this will happen. Europe isn't ready. I can only see them telling Zelenskey to go back and get the US inside as without them in a war against Russia, Europe is screwed.

Exactly this. If you think Trump is right prepare to say goodbye to your sons and husbands because that’s where this is headed.

Nope. No way. We'd be out of here quicker than you can say dual nationality.

MargaretThursday · 01/03/2025 11:26

I don't know if anyone here has read "Witch Week" by Diana Wynne Jones. In it one boy accidentally does a spell which makes him lose all his brain power. (he's under a spell where everything he says come true and he says something like "I can't think of anything".
He is convinced that he is super clever, because he can understand so little. He's meant to be writing a diary for school, and he wants to write something that shows how intelligent he is, but doesn't overdo it. After an hour's thought he writes one word: "doggies" I think it was, and sits back with a big smile convinced that he's done it.
That's what Trump's proclamations remind me of.

But the thing is because he thinks he's so clever, but isn't, he's really easy to manipulate because he thinks no one could possibly get anything over him because he'd see through anything.
Trump thinks he's manipulating Putin, but the truth is that Putin is manipulating Trump. If the deal had gone through, the minerals would have ended up in Russian hands, but Trump doesn't see that.

And this is the point isn’t it ? I don’t think any European country, certainly not the UK, has said that they would put boots on the ground to fight. That would signal WW3.

Sadly this will only lead to the likes of reform getting into power next. You will struggle to get the some of the UK public on board with higher taxes and reform will do exactly what the trump administration is doing now.

Thank you for the idea, "Weefreetiffany"!!!

Let's start a separate Slava Ukraini thread where the focus is not on the traitors and whether they are right or wrong, but on expressing support for Ukraine! Let's get it trending!!!

go ahead! Its a free country… and ukraine will be again once the russians stop their invasion, expansionism and bullying.

I think this is what we all want to know. Even with increased defence funding we are still very reliant on US or Chinese military tech.

I suspect relations with China will turn out to be pivotal, although I don't have anything to back that suspicion up. However, I am watching the negotiations over the future of the Chagos islands with great interest.

@OneLemonDog you know it's 30k and peacekeeping only and only with US 'backstop' ie security?
