To think Trump is right

1000 replies

Donotpanicoknowpanic · 01/03/2025 08:04

Watching the press conference last night which descended into an argument

I can't help think Trump was right and made good points

Thousands of troops are dying and being seriously injured every month

Trump wants it to stop

There are thousands of people who have children alive today who will not be alive tomorrow because of this war

They are clearly in a stalemate and soldiers are now dying untill peace terms are made as no side can win on the battlefield

Trump as brutal as it sounds was being realistic about what peace would be like

Ukraine has to be realistic

If Ukraine sign the rare earth deal with America then America will have a stake in Ukraine and they should then get a better security deal

Trump has not agreed what that is yet, it's clear he wants the European's to form a big part of that

The European's want American troops and for good reason

But this has to stop and the only way it will stop is by peace negotiations

And these have to be realistic and Trump is saying it as it is

He was nothing but a bully and that prick Vance is a disgrace.

If you cannot understand why conceding to Russia isn’t a long term peace solution then I cannot help you.

Yes exactly. Once they’ve bullied Zelenskyy into submission they’ll go after another country. Trump is a disgrace. Vance is the flying monkey backing him up. Fuck me, Putin must have some serious shit on Trump.

Flustration · 01/03/2025 10:08

Wildflowers99 · 01/03/2025 09:59

If Trump really believes Russia respects him and wouldn’t break a ceasefire under his watch, why not just provide the security guarantees?

Well exactly.

I think Putin encroaching further into Europe is looking more likely. However, as soon as he sets foot in a NATO country all shit will automatically hit the fan.

The US has two choices if that happens. They can stick around to help/protect their economic interests in Europe or they can cut a deal with Putin. Putin lets them continue to mine their rare minerals, hands them Greenland and the US quietly withdraws from NATO and backs away.

America First?

BusyExpert · 01/03/2025 10:08

I agree. It's helpful to see the whole press conference not just the edited highlights. Zelensky blew it

Of course Russia is wrong but Ukraine is not going to win this war There will be many more deaths and there is no way that the US and Europe can continue to fund this indefinitely.

the situation is complex, most people shouting their mouth of here have little idea of the details of agreement almost reached and the safeguards to be put in place. I think when Ukraine realises what it has potentially lost Zelensky will be toppled.

Diplomacy is key in these situations. It’s not just the message (even if you agree with it, which many don’t), but how it’s delivered. No diplomat has ever achieved their goal with bullying, humiliating, patronising, colonialist clap trap.

One day, Trump and Vance won’t be able to revel in their power. They’ll be fragile and unwell and need the empathy and kindness of others. There are times in life when money and power count for nothing. It’s only other people who can give you dignity. Karma’s a bitch.

I disagree with you, lots of diplomats have achieved their goals with bullying colonialist clap trap. It’s why half the world belonged to the British Empire.

If history teaches us anything it’s that empires do fall but that people love to build them. I do think we are entering into a new era of geopolitics.

We are very dependent on the rules of international law keeping everyone in check but if those were abandoned and the most powerful nations decide to stop arguing and just divy up the world to suit themselves. I assume U.S. would get Canada, Greenland, UK and Western Europe and all the mineral, gas, oil rights.

China gets Taiwan and big chunks of Africa. Russia will reclaim its old territories under a reunification banner.

Nothatgingerpirate · 01/03/2025 10:09

Yes, he's right.
Finally someone sensible.
I have been called a bot, a russian troll etc.
I'm a 46 yo Czech woman living in the UK
and I think someone told Mr. Zelensky as it is, nobody would before, for "morality".
I would LOVE to pack it in here and return to Prague, where I come from, after 25 years.
The amount of Ukrainian refugees in that city is larger than refugees in the whole of Britain, apparently.
And that is one reason why I still sit on the fence.
I'm not a fucking bot, this is not my war and I'm fed up of it.

Jade520 · 01/03/2025 10:09

bridgetreilly · 01/03/2025 09:56

And you think Putin will stop when he’s got Ukraine? Yeah, right.

Peace is not appeasement, surrender or capitulation to bullies. Unless Trump is going to kick Putin out and hand Ukraine freely over to its own self-government, Zelenskyy does not need to do a deal with him.

I mean that's a lovely idea but in reality 'Congress appropriated $174.2 billion through the five Ukraine supplemental appropriation acts enacted FY 2022 through FY 2024, of which $163.6 billion was allocated for OAR and the Ukraine response, and $10.6 billion was allocated for other, primarily humanitarian, purposes.'

War is expensive and without money from the US it's going to be a problem, Ukraine need the US, they can't just walk away from them saying 'no deal' and watch as Trump pulls all the money. The whole thing is a very big, complicated mess and the last thing anyone needs is Trump appearing to side with the Russians.

Travail · 01/03/2025 10:09

Look.

I find Trump entertaining because sometimes I just want to see the world burn and I think career politician's are bad news.

But that?

No.

That was the worst thing I've ever seen politically.

Zelensky is going to double down on that insult. There's absolutely no way he's coming back from that horror show.

He will absolutely not deal with Trump now.

Trump had it all to lose. And he did.

I think I witnessed the most catastrophic bit of statemanship ever there from Trump.

MarvellousMarch · 01/03/2025 10:10

@AlteredStater this war is between USA, Europe and Russia and Ukraine but
Ukraine is the conduit, Russia invaded and we have all scrambled to help.
Europe collectively to a degree and the USA
It's unsaid.
That's why there has been a fine line in arming Ukraine but not with planes.

However if USA does do this mine stuff and putin does become aggressive and tries to take USA mines then it really is Russia v USA isn't it? Would putin be able to take the USA on? In a open war? Would putin risk that after this appalling show in Ukraine?

Superstar88 · 01/03/2025 10:10

I agree with op here, as well as I agree with poster above that trump in it make a deal for himself. Dirty ? Yes but that is all international politics, as it was rightly commented, Ukraine doesn’t have military resources to fight on their own. They provided their own men but now even that is a problem, so longer it lasts weaker position Ukraine will be in. If US withdraws its support in few months, Russia take even more territory and claim that. It’s not fair deal what he is offered but it’s realistic. The one where Ukraine defeats Russia’s is not realistic.

This post is what it would look like if Neville Chamberlain were catapulted into 2025 and also suddenly didn't know how to use full stops.

Chamberlain and Halifax fought in WW1 and had seen first hand the devastation of millions of young men being sent to their deaths in the most appalling way. There was no shame in trying to prevent another generation suffering the same fate.

The prevailing narrative is that Chamberlain was a coward but he bought this country very valuable time to rearm. We were in no position to fight another war.

Europe give more than the US. Not to say the us donation isn't useful or large. But if they give in to Putin with no assurances, Russia will press on.

Coolasfeck · 01/03/2025 10:11

Put the bottle down OP. It’s too early to start drinking let alone be this pissed. That’s unless you’re based in the Kremlin and have been up all night partying after your American assets disgusting display.

Trump said a few days ago, in his televised cabinet meeting, NATO was finished, he wont supply Troops to fight in Europe..... whatever Putin does.

& without the USA air cover and missile systems, atm Europe wouldn't enforce art 5.

Which is why Europe needs to ramp up defence spend now, not in 2 or 5 years time.

Even if Trump retires in 4 years time, someone like Vance will take over... possibly even worse.

To negotiate peace you need someone who is respectful towards both sides

Hard talking yes but respect and compassion , and ego-less

I agree completely, which is why none of the parties involved last night are best placed to do it, but unfortunately for now they're what we've got

Yes Trump's impossible, but then IMO he's got a fellow corrupt and posturing fool in Zelensky and it's really not helping when calmer heads are needed

Europe can fund the arms needed by Ukraine with less than 1% of GDP.

Italy alone has a larger GDP than Russia.

If we don't defend our freedom and democracy it's not down to lack of means.

I can’t fathom why anyone in their right mind would capitulate towards Russia and Trump is facilitating that. Russia invaded Ukraine and didn’t expect that there would be a pushback. I blame Biden, Kamala and more importantly Trump for this mess. Biden could have supported Ukraine before he even left office knowing full well that Trump, a Russian crony, won’t do so either. Besides, why would the Ukrainians accept Russian rule when many can still remember when Ukraine became an independent state from that Soviet Union so they’re not going to be in any rush to go back to anything like that.

ChristmasPudd1990 · 01/03/2025 10:14

If you watch the whole thing,Zelenskyy didn't come across whiter than white. Trying to start negotiation in front of the press.

I am referring more to the underlaying message rather than the way it was delivered

Whichever finishing school they went to, there parents should ask for a refund

That is not the point I'm making

So you think that Zelensky should unilaterally surrender, let Putin keep the territory they have annexed and Putin will just stop there? That he wouldn't be emboldened to invade other countries to fulfil his dream of a 'Greater Russia'?

You are as uninformed as you are heartless. It was a disgusting spectacle and European and other leaders have since led an outpouring of support for Ukraine.

you are so wrong Zelensky blew it.
its helpful to see the whole press conference not just the edited highlights.
Zelensky has backed himself in a corner, he has no power only that afforded him by his allies and he has seriously pissed of the biggest and most powerful of all.

he will come back with his tail between his legs or he will be toppled.

IncessantNameChanger · 01/03/2025 10:15

It's not just about stopping fighting is it? We would make a lovely military base in Europe for America and benefit from their protection in return. Fancy becoming American op?

Estonia would make a great Russian port. Where do you draw the line? Clearly not at invasion. Let Putin advance. Then we can choose Putin invasion up to our border or Trumps front line in Europe.

Or ideally just let everyone live in peace without war.
