Have to be honest since trump won i wasn't going anyway. But anyone cancelling or going elsewhere?
I have a big birthday this year, I would go to the garbage dump rather than support America,/musk in any way. I know therwmis at least half of America that doesn't.support this shxt and for them I am sorry but for the republicans too spineless and self interested to resist their dictator.trump...not one iota of sympathy for the rising prices loss of Medicaid or medicare.

YABU ..to cancel/Not go
YANBU...wouldn't touch it with a bargepole

Do we export a lot to Canada, then?

👋 Me, too.

I've noticed since last week or so signs in grocery stores pointing out more prominently (very big print) where items are from, ie produce. People are motivated to buy items from places other than the States right now. Cross border shopping south has taken a hit as well.

Travel broadens the mind. I’ve been to Russia a few times and glad that I did. You get a far better perspective of the world if you experience it first hand rather than just listening to what the media tell you.

I visited the Soviet Union in the late 80s because I was interested in Russian culture and had been learning Russian. It was fascinating to see a society that was so different from our own and I was glad I went.

I was no supporter of the Soviet regime, but somehow it didn’t matter to me at the time. However, I wouldn’t go to Russia now, because I so thoroughly disapprove of Putin - for some reason that now matters to me.

Around the time I was learning Russian, I read a letter in the newsletter of one of the UK-USSR friendship societies from someone who was clearly a committed communist who thought the USSR was a kind of paradise. She had recently visited it for the first time and was shocked to see that there really were queues outside shops, because of the shortages of many goods. She had always believed that reports in the West of shortages and queues in the USSR were just capitalist propaganda. Seeing the truth with her own eyes clearly broadened her mind.

And I hope you don't use Amazon, Apple, Starbucks, or McDonald's, as well! Do you have an Amazon account? Have you cancelled it? And I hope you're not using Microsoft, Google, Netflix, or Uber. Googling anything would be beyond the pale. If you have a Yahoo, AOL, or Gmail account, you'll need to cancel those, and Facebook also.

Cancelled our Amazon, Netflix, Disney, Paramount and Audible accounts last month.

Didn't eat at McDonalds, have started using a local chain instead of Starbucks

Also avoiding US goods in supermarkets. It meant a lot of label checking to start but the boycotts are so widespread that our supermarkets are helping with prominent labelling of Canadian products, and other stores are cutting back on American goods in favor of Canadian ones.

It's not realistically possible to avoid everything that the US has a stake in, but I can, and have massively cut back.

Oh, and switched from using Uber Eats to having regular deliveries from a local business.

romatheroamer · 01/03/2025 06:52

I wouldn't go, I used to go to the states quite a lot and enjoyed visiting places like Charleston and Savannah which are in Rep. states.
Even in safe Democrat areas, you'd be likely to be putting money in the pocket of some Trump voter and it's the voters, isn't it, without whom he'd be nowhere.

I would absolutely love to visit Russia properly, if it ever gets back on its feet after Putin. I went on a Baltics cruise once, and we didn't have visas so got carted in a coach to some tourist spots and then had to get back on the ship, we couldn't wander round. Obviously I wouldn't go to Russia now, with Putin having gone mad, but I hope to go one day, if he's out of power and the country improves. The history is amazing, the architecture and the palaces and museums are incredible, the traditions of ballet, figure skating, classical music, and literature are enticing, and I'd love to experience Russian food and the Russian way of life.

Well, you're definitely committed! Have to give you a round of applause if you've done all that, I have to admit.

Using local business and services is great. I always try to do that too.

It’s unsafe for women .. they have a sex offender in charge, having given a home to the ex trafficking Tate’s, and, have limited access to basic female healthcare

I also wouldn't go as I'm not white.

And you'd be surprised how many are making similar efforts, regardless of where they are on the political spectrum. The one silver lining is how unifying it has been for Canada.

I think that’s why they added the “in Canada” so that people would understand that they aren’t in the uk. It is pretty early for a Saturday though.

I feel sorry for Americans right now they are a laughing stock of the "true" free world. With a very un presidential President and Vancy is a bully a country showing no compassion and massive Putin supporter. How you treat the most vulnerable is a measure of a good society unfortunately Americans should be hanging their heads in shame. I will not visit whilst Trump/Vance are overlord dictators. American people are lovely but misguided at the moment imho

I mean, only half of them are misguided and should hang their heads in shame. The other half are OK.

bertiebump · 01/03/2025 07:02

I am hoping to go later this year.
On another note, Zelenski was ripped to shreds yesterday, I cringed for him. But being devil's advocate, is this the way to finish this terrible war. Putin will take over Ukraine sooner or later unless it finishes, he's already in control of 1/5 of it. Maybe Z isn't the guy to be in charge at this moment in time as it is an unwinnable war. I've all respect for him and admire what he's done, but he's limited on manpower and will be beaten sooner or later.

You would risk your own livelihood because of the politics of a country in which you don't have a vote, don't live in, and can't influence. Sorry but that's crazy.

It isn’t necessarily a question of trying to influence the country. I’d find it distasteful to be in a country where so many people think Trump and his cronies are good guys.

I was taking my DD to NYC for her 21st birthday in May, we decided tonight to cancel it. We booked it before Trump became president, felt uneasy about it when he won, now there is no way I will spend a single dollar in that country. We’ll go somewhere else.

Jesus, your poor DD! She must have really been looking forward to that.

Trump derangement syndrome is real.

Gravytanned · 01/03/2025 07:06

We were discussing a trip in 2027 for a friend's big birthday but I won't be going now.

I was also hoping to go to NYC in 2028 but again will postpone.

I've never been to the US so was really excited about two chances to go. I'm sure I'll still go, it'll just be delayed a bit.

And so many don't...

I'd also bet that a proportion of the people who voted for him are now appalled as well. This presidency is nothing like his last one. He's gone certifiably insane this time round. I suspect (and hope) that a lot of people who voted for him were not expecting this.

I haven't really absorbed that meeting with Zelenskyy yet. It was beyond words.

Our local shops are also promoting Canadian products and we’re consciously buying them rather than US. We’ve also limited our trips over the border. If all Canadians did the same it would support our economy.
Personally I’d like for Canada to pull the plug on the electric supply to the US!!

Presumably a lot of people on here won't be visiting many other countries either due to their politics too.

Correct.

I can certainly understand not going to certain parts of the US for that reason. But DC has a high proportion of people of colour, as does NYC, and both are great places to visit. I think you'd be OK there and also in other deep blue, tolerant cities and states. But I get why you'd give it a miss. OTOH, why let racism dictate where you go!

Still visiting my brother in Florida and he a proper maga fan.
He’s got a green card. After Covid-he’s a anti vaccination person- he went on and on about how we shouldn’t have had them, it was the only way to get into the USA at the time-proving you had them. Proper nutter, gun and all but still going to see him.

Hopefully he is starting to wake up and smell the coffee! I’ve a few friends over there who are Trump supporters, but are now what the hell have we done!

Yeah, our local Save On Foods has huge "Buy Canadian" murals on the windows now, along with loads of in-store signage and labelling.

Saw someone get (gently) booed for picking up some Budweiser in the liquor store 😁
