Have to be honest since trump won i wasn't going anyway. But anyone cancelling or going elsewhere?
I have a big birthday this year, I would go to the garbage dump rather than support America,/musk in any way. I know therwmis at least half of America that doesn't.support this shxt and for them I am sorry but for the republicans too spineless and self interested to resist their dictator.trump...not one iota of sympathy for the rising prices loss of Medicaid or medicare.

YABU ..to cancel/Not go
YANBU...wouldn't touch it with a bargepole

Jesus, your poor DD! She must have really been looking forward to that.

Trump derangement syndrome is real.

It’s called modelling decent behaviour. DD will thank her mother in years to come.

Trump is trying to force Project 2025 ideals onto the blue states.

I'd be more worried about a civil war than supporting the US economy.

Exactly. Many commentators out there are producing a civil war. I love the visiting the US but not planning on going until I can see how all this plays out. I know what I’d like to happen to Trump…….

I can certainly understand not going to certain parts of the US for that reason. But DC has a high proportion of people of colour, as does NYC, and both are great places to visit. I think you'd be OK there and also in other deep blue, tolerant cities and states. But I get why you'd give it a miss. OTOH, why let racism dictate where you go!

I’m white and anti-racist. No one is obliged to go somewhere they feel unsafe.

How do you know that it wasn't the daughter who wanted to cancel?

It will be the person with the economic power who is the decision maker here - the parent(s). I'm sure that the daughter wouldn't stay home out of protest if the parents hadn't cancelled it! Most people of her age are desperate to get out and see the world, whatever its politics.

Do you think people are also cancelling trips to the UK now that we have such an awful government?

I’m not sure you can quite compare the two! However due to how expensive it is here and the awful exchange rate here is not the destination of choice for many tourists currently!

I mean, good for you, but I was replying to the person who said that she wouldn't go to the States because she wasn't white. And of course no one should be obliged to go anywhere they feel unsafe.

Hoplolly · 01/03/2025 07:18

I probably wouldn't cancel if I had a trip booked, but I certainly wouldn't be making a new booking. Plenty of other places to go in the world.

Zita60 · 01/03/2025 07:18

She said “I” booked it, and “we” decided to cancel it. That suggests her daughter was part of the decision to go elsewhere.

Accusing people of having “Trump derangement syndrome” if they don’t like Trump is insulting. Those of us who don’t like him and what he is doing have good reasons for our opinions. We might or might not be right, but to imply that we are “deranged “ for having those opinions is not helpful.

FYI folks, Boston is famously ultra-blue. That is, Democrat. And it's a gorgeous, gorgeous city, very walkable. And completely anti-Trump and pro-women's rights. Lots of interesting things to see and do. And its history is irrevocably tied to the UK, being that it's the place where the War of Independence started. You can see the spot where the first shot was fired in the fight to take American back from the British, and there are lots of other historical sites, too. Great for older kids, especially the Tea Party museum. There's also a Children's Museum, a truly amazing aquarium with IMAX cinema next to it showing nature/marine programmes, and so much more.

A good place to visit if you want to holiday in the US guilt-free!

Top travel tip: The Holiday Inns in the Chelsea/Revere area are short Uber rides from the city, about 15 mins, very nice and a fraction of the price of city hotels. They're under Boston Logan hotels, even though they're outside a bit. We stayed in this one, and it was fab, so clean.

I concur. Love Boston and the surrounding areas.

No she won't, she'll always remember her mother taking a trip to NYC away from her! Great 21st present!

Half the US did not vote for him. So I think not going there because of him is insane. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Remember, it's also a country that voted him out, and also a country who voted for a black president not so long ago.

There are many more interesting places to visit than NY - try north of the border to one of our Canadian cities

I was never so intense in my opinions than at that age so I would absolutely expect an adult to have a say and an opinion.

my daughter is 12 and is starting to ask questions about America. My kids and I all have 3 passports (uk, us and Israel) so we’ve had a lot of difficult conversations over the last couple of years. She’s has opinions now, so I’m sure by 21 will have even more!

Surely after the White House performance you are questioning why he was elected?

I am hoping to go later this year.
On another note, Zelenski was ripped to shreds yesterday, I cringed for him. But being devil's advocate, is this the way to finish this terrible war. Putin will take over Ukraine sooner or later unless it finishes, he's already in control of 1/5 of it. Maybe Z isn't the guy to be in charge at this moment in time as it is an unwinnable war. I've all respect for him and admire what he's done, but he's limited on manpower and will be beaten sooner or later.

I don’t agree that he was ripped to shreds. I think he said what he could across Vance’s shouting. He walked away without signing the minerals deal. Trump and Vance were behaving like school bullies. Zelenskyy was the only statesman in the room.

And, of course, the far right party were promoted by Musk and Vance.

I know, I was seething when I saw that Musk had said how the AfD could "save Germany." He seriously needs to shut his gob.

anothernameanotherplanet · 01/03/2025 07:25

Wasn’t planning to go - but definitely wouldn’t now.

Nor would I buy a Tesla which I might have considered.

It’ll be 4 years before these decisions are up for review.

Trump was democratically elected in a process of free and fair elections. Millions of Americans chose him, it’s not a dictatorship. If you are only going to visit countries where you agree with the policies, I think it’s going to narrow the pool somewhat. People don’t always like the results of a vote and you are free to choose not to go because of the result, but you will really be missing out. Your decision either way won’t affect Trump at all or impact American foreign policy.

"Not sure" is a massive understatement. You can disagree with Starmer's policies, you can find him 'boring', or undynamic. But he has enough class to behave as a statesman. And I'd have said that equally about Cameron when he was PM (but definitely not Johnson). That ambush last night was shameful for America, a stain on a country's conscience that calls itself leader of the free world.

My American friends are welcome in my home, as ever. But no, I will not prop up this tyrannical administration with my money. And I will also think carefully about how I buy and use US services and products if alternative European and UK ones are available.

It's not just a matter of the debacle with Zelensky in the WH, the rolling back of womens' rights, turning it's back on Ukraine and Europe, threatening to take over Canada, Gaza, Greenland, cozying up with Putin, tariffs left right and center... No. I won't be going as a matter of principle, even if many Americans are against the administration. I am widely travelled and also have lived in the US, but won't be going anytime soon. The US is taking an adversarial stance towards the western world, and its actions are going to affect the economies of many countries in the immediate future, In turn, I don't see any reason to prop up its economy even in a meager way. Voting with your wallet is the only thing that makes a difference, and might even help the Americans who didn't vote for this circus in the future. If nothing change, then nothing changes.

It would be really interesting to hear from a UK travel agent or tour operator about whether bookings to the US are down in any significant numbers.
