Petuniaspetal · 28/02/2025 20:24

Have to be honest since trump won i wasn't going anyway. But anyone cancelling or going elsewhere?
I have a big birthday this year, I would go to the garbage dump rather than support America,/musk in any way. I know therwmis at least half of America that doesn't.support this shxt and for them I am sorry but for the republicans too spineless and self interested to resist their dictator.trump...not one iota of sympathy for the rising prices loss of Medicaid or medicare.

YABU ..to cancel/Not go
YANBU...wouldn't touch it with a bargepole

If you start censoring your own speech through fear while there is still free speech, then that’s a very concerning course of action.

Don’t do that.

I'm not censoring my own speech...believe me. But I will not be going to the USA while the orange one or his ilk are in charge. But for those that have to go to the USA it makes sense to be mindful of what they have written might negatively impact their travel experience.

You do you.

But honestly, even encouraging people to censor their own free speech is letting them win.

For the purposes of their travel. Why give them the excuse to stick you in a holding cell while they strip search you. That would only give them a bigger kick.
Be wiley...no point sticking a neon light above your head.

This is in today's Washington Post. Amongst other advice, anyone travelling to the US is adviced to have a lawyer on speed dial. SMH.

Zita60 · 26/03/2025 07:41

And this is an opinion piece in the Guardian: Don’t visit the US – it just isn’t worth the risks right now

She points out that Western visitors have been detained for weeks because of minor issues with visas. The UK's travel advice now says that visitors must ensure their paperwork is completely correct or they could be arrested by US border staff, and Germany's advice now warns that not even correctly issued visas or visa waivers will necessarily allow you entry to the US.

But she also makes the point many PP on this thread have made, "Why spend your money in the US, which is threatening to annex its neighbours and rapidly descending into authoritarianism? ... choosing how we spend our cash is the greatest power most of us have. And choosing to deploy it in Trump’s America helps normalise an abnormal situation."

Don’t visit the US – it just isn’t worth the risks right now | Arwa Mahdawi

Minor visa infractions have seen tourists detained, shackled and deported by overzealous US border staff. There are many more welcoming places to go on holiday, writes Arwa Mahdawi

TizerorFizz · 26/03/2025 08:26

@ZitaWe have an Esta. As we aren’t working, but going on holiday, we don’t need a visa and that’s standard. There isn’t any visa or additional paperwork. So the article is not talking about standard uk citizens going on holiday.

It’s impossible to change plans when everything is booked and high deposits paid. I cannot afford to lose fares paid either. I’m not planning to go back after this trip but business will have to continue for many firms. Student exchanges might be more problematic regarding visas and working visas too. Of course journalists find a minority to write about. My guess is most people are fine but the USA has always been eagle eyed on visas. It’s not new and of course people should have whet they need but they always did.

I know I'm probably being really dense here , but I'm really confused as to why they hold people in detention for days/weeks and not just send them home if they have a ticket. I'm not escaping from Europe .

Depends on whether they think any offence has been committed

Petuniaspetal · 26/03/2025 19:27

They're probably enjoying the power trip sending a message to the world. Not that I think they have to...between their ineptitude, their stupidity, their dangerous behaviour and nszi like contempt for anything other than white men, it's not exactly a promotional ad for holidaying in the USA .

This makes sense for that woman who was backpacking across the States and cleaning houses in the process but holiday makers , not so much.

Petuniaspetal · 26/03/2025 22:12

Based on the recent rhetoric of the trump administration, and Vance in particular, regarding their scathing disdain for the UK and Europe, it would stick in my throat to even spend a penny ( and no that isn't a misplaced metaphor) in America. It has no laws worth talking about it seems.

The recent removal of all coloured and ethnic veterans from the official Veteran website...is beyond horrific and the stench of nazism is overwhelming. I am absolutely stunned that absolutely nothing can be done about these fascists and the thought of breathing the same air as them makes me sick.

Marjorie Taylor Green showing her contempt for a British journalist...the first 40 seconds should be enough...its funny and appalling in equal measure.

It's awful, isn't it? It's not a good look for their administration, and it's not going to enhance their standing in the world. They're bullies, in my view.

Parker231 · 27/03/2025 12:17

I don't believe they care about anyone but themselves. They don't care what they look like or sound like. As far as they're concerned it's just me me me. The problem is that for trump that is him and his billionaire supporters. He doesnt give 2 figs for his grass roots magas who are too blind to see that he is playing them for fools.

Another story about a British tourist being detained by ICE when she was leaving the US.

That is utterly horrifying and could actually happen to anyone. I think people have an image in their heads about these detainees and that's why they're still heading to this terrifying country - they honestly think it couldn't/wouldn't happen to them.

It’s a disproportionate response by ICE of course, but there’s no evidence that people who comply with the terms of their ESTA have been similarly detained, is there?

I'm hearing absolute horror stories about mistakes being made, even the woman in the article has stories about 'legal status' detainees.

The woman in the article is trying to play victim after violating the terms of her Esta by working unauthorised and illegally.

Interestingly she is doing the whole "The US is the bad guy routine" and conveniently glossing over the fact Canada denied her entry because they were worried she would work illegally.
Canada were essentially the whistle-blower..

Law-abiding tourists or green card holders won't have any issues.
The ones paraded in front of the media all have either violated/misrepresented their tourist visa, haven't followed the residency requirements of a green card holde4 or have violated Section 8 of the INA, something that all green card holders must abide by.

Cbp, Ice or Dhs aren't doing anything new. They are following what's set out as inadmissible/deportable on Section 8 of the INA. Regulations last amended in 2008 by the Obama Administration.

Fun fact, Canada have stricter immigration laws than the US. I wonder why that isn't being paraded in the news? Fun fact number 2, 2024 stats just recently released have shown visa/green card application denials are up 15% year on year. Roughly 50% of all visa applications were rejected/denied by Canadian immigration (35% in 2023). Wonder why that isn't also being paraded in mainstream media 🤔

Canada was not "the whistleblower". They simply said that she would need a work visa to enter Canada, and told her to go back to the US to apply for one. They didn't detain her for more than a month - but the US authorities did.

This French scientist was refused entry to the US, despite having correct paperwork, because of text messages on his phone.

"A diplomatic source told the French news agency that the incident occurred on 9 March. The scientist was on assignment for the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). The same source said that messages discussing the Trump administration’s treatment of scientists had been found. The researcher was reportedly then accused of writings “that reflect hatred toward Trump and can be described as terrorism”."

So criticism of Trump's policies are "hatred" and "terrorism"?
